Well it looks like this show's been pushed further back!

Cowboy Bebop” star John Cho sustained a knee injury on the set of the live-action Netflix series while filming in New Zealand in October, Variety has learned, leading to a 7-9 month break in production.

While the nature of the incident that led to the injury is not altogether clear, it occurred during a rehearsed sequence that was not considered to be a large-scale stunt. Cho is back in Los Angeles, where he will undergo surgery, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Cho posted a Bruce Lee quote on his Instagram page Friday afternoon: “Water can flow or it can crash.”

He added: “Thanks for all the well wishes everyone. Gonna be back and flowing in no time!”

Netflix’s “Cowboy Bebop” is a 10-episode adaptation of the original 26-episode anime series from Sunrise studio, about a group of misfit bounty hunters in space, led by Spike Spiegel. Cho plays Spiegel, described as an “impossibly cool bounty hunter with a deadly smile, a wry wit, and style to spare,” who traverses the solar system with his ex-cop partner, Jet, who will be portrayed by Mustafa Shakir.

Daniella Pineda and Alex Hassell are also part of the main cast, playing Faye Valentine and Spiegel’s nemesis Vicious. The series is a co-production between Netflix and Tomorrow Studios, with Netflix handling physical production.

“Thor: The Dark World” and “Thor: Ragnarok” scribe Christopher Yost was slated to write and exec produce the first episode. Andre Nemec, Josh Appelbaum, Jeff Pinkner, and Scott Rosenberg of Midnight Radio are also listed as executive producers. Yasuo Miyakawa, Masayuki Ozaki, and Shin Sasaki of Sunrise Inc., the studio behind the original series, are executive producing along with Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios, Tetsu Fujimura, and Matthew Weinberg.

Deadline first reported the news.

What: Do you want them to hire some random unknown asian actor with no established fanbase?

I still say it should've been Donnie Yen, since he knows Jeet Kune Do like Spike.

Also, are there any news about Ed? Is she gonna be some trans boy?

The character herself admitted she’s a girl in a few episodes and the movie. There was even a boy in the manga that’s her kinda love interest that her computer is named after.

So this is the same studio who's also doing the live-action One Piece series, right? If they're gonna put Cowboy Bebop on hold, that could give them some time to work out the kinks for One Piece. I have more faith in that one because Oda himself is supposed to be overlooking the project, and he's a huuuuge celebrity (almost to godhood status) in Japan, so Netflix wouldn't dare work against him.

So the guy who's 25 years too old to play Spike injured his knee trying to play Spike. What a shock.
Not only that, but there's this little tidbit in the article.

While the nature of the incident that led to the injury is not altogether clear, it occurred during a rehearsed sequence that was not considered to be a large-scale stunt.

In other words, he wasn't even doing a major Spike stunt, but he still managed to injure himself.

Wait. A live action One Piece series?

... How is that even going to work? I mean, I never watched the show really, but I was an editor with a fansub group back ages and ages ago that did a few episodes before we fizzled out though and I saw some of it. The main character is, like... made of rubber, isn't he?

... Oh god, the CGI. The CGI.

Believe it or not, the rubber main character's one of more normal looking characters. There's a semi-anthropomorphic reindeer, a half-robot dude with freakishly large shoulders and arms, and a tall skeleton with an afro.

Granted, I don't know how far along the live-action series is planning to go and those crewmembers show up way later on (except the reindeer), but One Piece is a series that I seriously don't see working in live-action.

In a perfect world, this would basically be a mix between a Kung-Fu action film, Crime, Westerns, and all set in space with a focus on fight choreography. Like if you put a Bruce Lee film, the Nick and Nora movies, Blade Runner, and a cowboy hat in a blender and mainline the resulting liquid. Well done, it would be the best show of the year.
I this world, it will be a shit show about trying to 'revamp' a show that has been hailed as one of the best not just anime, but animated shows, ever made for the modern age. And the modern age is fucking retarded.
