He's playing Spike's grandfather, right?

Let me remind you that the anime version of Spike is supposed to be 27. And he's the youthful foil to the older Jet Black (who himself is only supposed to be 36, but in universe he actually looks older.)

I wonder how many wokesters are going to screech about a character named Jet Black being played by a black guy? (BTW, this is the only recorded time I'm okay with "blackwashing" since I thought the original anime character was at least partially black, or seemed like the kind of character a grizzled black character actor could easily play in an entertaining fashion.)

Aside from Faye (who is clearly Asian, given the bits of origin they revealed for her), I felt that most of the characters' races were left ambiguous ... Which makes a lot of sense, given how Earth in the show was reduced to it's own "country" as the other planets were being inhabited.

Look at Spike: His last name is Spiegel, and his "afro" could easily be a jew-fro (so he could be part-white). He could also easily be part-Asian, as well as part-African. Look at Jet: I could easily see someone like Bruce Willis playing him, as well as someone like Danny Glover from Lethal Weapon. The show never specifies their races, and that's totally cool.

Netflix wants to give itself a pat on the back for casting a token Asian as Spike and "getting the races correct," yet they Latino-washed Faye when she is CLEARLY Asian in the original series. Netflix is completely full of bullshit; they just wanted a non-white cast ... Not an ACCURATE cast.

I never once looked at Spike and thought "yeah he could be part African". He's lily white.

Someone like Keanu Reeves, who's part Asian, part white (or whatever he is) would have been perfect for Spike, but Keanu Reeves is finally starting to show a bit of age nowadays so he can't be cast in that role anymore. 10 years ago, maybe.

His fro is why I was thinking he could be part-African. Doesn't mean that he is; was just driving the point home that Spike has a lot of physical characteristics that make him racially ambiguous, in my opinion. Netflix wasn't approaching the character like this at all and was clearly like, "The show was made by Asians, so we got to have the main character as an Asian" therefore we got half of Harold and Kumar as Spike Spiegel now. Cho is SUCH a bad choice for the character.

Cho looks older than Keanu, too. Keanu is in his mid-50s, and he's finally starting to show some signs of aging (looks good on him though, not gonna lie), and I'd still pick him as Spike because he's the perfect actor for it. Haha.

Theoretically I suppose it's possible that they held an open casting call for each role, and people who didn't really match the physical description of the characters just happened to have absolutely perfect auditions that made everyone agree that they were the best choice. I'm sure that really has happened at least once. Probably.

It's Netflix, though, so more likely it was just fuck-you casting as a giant middle finger to the expected audience. Faye is a proud woman of color now, take that ya incels!

I'm interested to see some pictures of these people in costume/makeup, because I honestly can't even visualize most of them in the role they were given.

I anticipate this show will be an awful dumpster fire and am perversely looking forward to how bad they're going to butcher it.

I always figured Jet was a light-skinned black guy, and the black guy dubbing him didn't dissuade me from that notion.

Still ridiculous when you cast a Latina as what should be an Asian woman.

Scarlett is seething rn

The thing about Ghost in the Shell, though, is that it doesn't matter what race the Major's "shell" is. That's the fucking point of the technology of that story to begin with. It was infuriating how much backlash Scarlett got. Even the original creator of the series said that Scarlett looked 100% the part of the character, and most of the audience in Japan said that she looked the part, too.

I can understand the anger on the international side but if I was in Japan, I would consider it an honor, in the same way people love RDJ and Evans as Tony and Cap, that such a revered actress was getting to play a character like that.

Not to mention she was an emotionless husk because I mean.....we all would had we discovered we were originally a Japanese human girl. Contextually it makes sense, why Juliette Binoche lied and made her believe she was Mira.

But now Scarlett will continue to get Asian "jokes" directed at her for a long time especially with BW coming out. (I really hope the film will elevate Nat. She's my favorite and it pisses me off that she basically gets shoved because everyone wants to ride Steve's dick and fellate Tony, Panther, Thor, and obsess over Spiderman and Carol.)
Everyone seems to ignore Tilda Swinton and others who've played different races. And funny enough Scarlett's portrayal of the Major has no racist undertones. She's not doing Mickey Rourke.

Is she? she has an english name, comes from the upperclass of a former british colonie and thinks of herself as a gypsy.

there is a latin country with a big Japanese Population. you could find an actress there i bet.

All the characters in Bebop are very racially ambiguous, which was probably an intentional choice as Bebop was obviously meant for an international audience.

I actually never thought of Faye as Asian, even though she's supposed to be from Singapore, I mean looking at her from that perspective it makes sense and she could be, but it's not something glaringly obvious.

And casting a black actor as Jet is fine, considering his English voice actor was black, it works.

So the casting is less what I'm worried about and more that I doubt you can do it justice on a Netflix TV budget, especially considering how that up coming Witcher series is looking.

Cowboy Bebop is one of the greatest things I've ever seen in my entire life, it's a shame if the waters get muddied by a bad live action adaption.

1. Her real name is actually never revealed in the series. "Faye Valentine" was the name given to her by the doctors because they didn't know who she was.

2. In the episode, "Speak Like a Child," the footage from Faye's childhood shows that they are definitely in Singapore.

Would they give an english name to a asian looking person? also her first name wasnt lost.

so there were no upperclass british people in Singapore?
Also her eyes are green, ever seen a chinese person with green eyes? the video of her past also shows that she is not a brown person since you can see her beeing as white as a readhead.

I'm disappointed in this. It's unnecessary and what it's shaping up to be is hot garbage.

I don't like they hired an asian man to play a martian. Not enough martian representation in Hollywood.

Also her eyes are green, ever seen a chinese person with green eyes?

Ever seen Big Trouble In Little China? It's rare but it's possible.

Faye definitely looks like she could be Asian, but of course it's vague.

What if she's both? Half white, half Asian? In fact maybe that is the secret to all the characters, maybe Spike is half white and half Asian as well, although I'd say Jet is probably half white and half black.

Interestingly (to me anyway), red hair and green eyes both exist in various Asian populations, and the mutation that causes them is a totally different genetic sequence from the one in European populations, which appears to have evolved entirely independently. Ghengis Khan was described as having red hair and green eyes in several contemporary sources.

Even before learning she's from Singapore, I always felt that Faye has the look of an Asian woman compared to the rest of the Bebop crew. She's light-skinned, is taller, and has a fuller buxom than the average Asian, but she has the appearance when it comes to her hair style (and its texture), the shape of her eyes, and the shape of her face.

Also helps to keep in mind Faye was from just before everything went to shit on planet Earth. She's from several decades before the start of the series, so she actually stands out a bit and can be considered an exotic woman, in that regard. I think she's even been commented on as such.

she is a millennial... lets just hope they dont think about that when doing the series.
