I'll be greatly amused if they try to do a Big-O adaptation and get a C&D from Big-O tires.

This adaptation is a fucking disgrace.
I knew it would be dogshit when the first scene directly aped the convenience store fight from the movie but removed all of the fucking charm. Spike (alongside Faye and Jet now) are a billion times more bloodthirsty and violent than they are in the original series. I don't remember Spike ever brutally murdering people so callously in the original except for when he directly went up against the Syndicate's goons in Session 5 and the final few episodes. The gunfights almost always injured rather than killed. Faye's surprised when Spike nails one of the goons holding her hostage in the head without even a second thought.

Faye is the fucking culmination of everything wrong with how Netflix writes women, especially in adaptations. They take the worst possible view of the character because she's sexy and seduces men, and in their dipshit minds that means she's a bad character, so they need to rewrite her as a mouthy, annoying #girlboss who saves the male characters all the time, curses nonstop unnecessarily (becuz it's 4 adultz!!) and constantly threatens to shoot men in the dicks for even slightly pissing her off. And of course they turned her into a lesbo complete with an on-screen makeout and naked after-sex scene, that's a given in any Netflix adaptation. But remember! They totally didn't want to sexualize her, that's why they gave her a naked makeout scene with another female actress! Totally not sexual! It's diversity and inclusion!

Faye was insecure and overcompensating due to lacking a past or any connections. The first connections she made after waking up were a bunch of con-artists that saddled her with a shit ton of debt and left her to rot, which makes her untrusting of and distant towards others. But we can't have that, she must be as vulgar and violent and aggressive as possible to be a "good" character in the eyes of the dipshits at netflix.

Vicious is just laughable the entire show. I have a hard time deciding who I want to sock in the face more, Netflix-Faye or Netflix-Vicious. Depends on the episode, I guess. Faye wins out most of the time anyway.

And OF FUCKING COURSE Julia is the #girlboss twist villain who gives a speech about how both of the men in her life are evil and neglectful and made her turn evil because it's a netflix production so every previous pre-established heterosexual relationship has to have a dark side to it where the man did something wrong and fucked everything up somehow.

So many little lines made me roll my eyes like Julia unsubtly going "when will he throw me out the window" during Green Bird, namedropping "Death Note", Netflix-Faye going "I'm not going to carry that weight". The uncomfortably race-based "flirting" from that old white woman named Woodcock (really subtle).

I knew the diversity/inclusion shit that Netflix tries to do would be obnoxious when we first saw Gren become a hypersexual pole-dancing transsexual stereotype. OG Gren was a tragic character who hated what the anti-psychotics he took did to his body.

Hollywood has a stupid obsession with glamourizing the LGBT or minority characters. Gren isn't a "glamorous" character, he's a tragic victim of Vicious's ruthless behavior and ambitions to reach the top. He isn't even an LGBT character, he didn't willingly "transition", he was experimented on and turned into a vengeful husk of a man.
I hate how Netflix thinks that above all a reboot MUST "subvert expectations". They do shit like this on purpose to make fans of the original pissed and drive more buzz about it. They did it with He-Man, they did it with Death Note, they do it with every fucking pre-established property they molest.
Don't forget "replace rival smashing spike out the window with his ex GF who is now a strong woman who doesnt need man telling him off about how their relationship was a "bad dream" before she shoots him and he conveniently falls and smashes through the thick ass mosaic window like it was made out of paper.
It's crazy how the fucking ANIME looks less cartoonish than this. Netflix-Julia shoots Netflix-Spike in an unspecified area and he magically flies out of the window.

It's even worse because it looks like he's falling at a negative 90 degree angle straight down initially, but suddenly it cuts to John Cho wriggling his arms around while holding his mouth agape like a fucking slackjawed moron falling at a much farther distance.

I don't get how the Netflix writers missed Spike being nihilistically unafraid of death, something that defines Spike's entire carefree character. Spike puts his life on the line constantly both to catch bounties and/or help save innocent people. He had no regard for his own life.

In the Green Bird scene, his eyes are empty because he's accepting his fate, Vicious is "the only one who can kill him" because of their unfinished business. He's already lost Julia once, he already sees the life he started living afterwards as being nothing but a dream.

This entire "the live action Cowboy Bebop FINALLY treats it's women with RESPECT!" narrative is funny considering how 18 of the original 26 episodes were written by women, and how the Netflix series turns Julia into what is essentially a crybaby trophy wife.
But don't you get it?! Having women dress sexy is demeaning! Tumblr and Joss Whedon and Anita Sarkeesian and Josh Mcintosh every other "NERD MEDIA" source in 2013 told me that! But cramming in unnecessary domestic abuse subplots that weren't in the original and turning a straight woman gay and giving her a naked sex scene with another woman is totally not misogynistic at all.

So many "NURRRD CULTURE" writers like this tranny (a senior editor for Motherboard) are so desperate to gleefully eat whatever shit hollywood shoves on their plate and pretend it's good. They're always so hostile to the fans of the original for absolutely no reason at all.

It reminds me of how game journos treated fans of the original Devil May Cry games when DmC released. The cried about how "embarrassed" they were to play the original because it was "anime" and made by the Japanese, so this bottom of the barrel Western slop is way better because it has a more familiar taste of western shit that they're used to giving 10s to. The fans were evil for not liking Donte because they "don't like change" and they should, for some reason, let something that bills itself as a Devil May Cry game "be its own thing".

It's this kind of strange culture of being strangely hellbent on making weird excuses for mediocre or awful products that leads us into getting more effortless slop like this dogshit reboot. I expect Netflix's One Piece to turn out the same way.

Never watched the anime or the Netflix live action, however its a safe bet that every and I mean EVERY live action adaptation of anime is going to be shit. Ex: Death Note, DBZ. From what i see on the Net Cowboy Bebop (the anime) is good. Might just watch it.
I mean there are good live action adaptations out there like Alita Battle Angel and Speed Racer along with some Japanese live action adaptations. I've said this numerous times but the issue with a live action adaptation is to see how the head writer or director understands the source material which explains why all the shit ones are well shit. Such as Adam Wingard acting like Light was a normal kid who was corrupted, the writer for Dragonball Evolution pretty much admitting he knew jackshit about Dragon Ball when he apologized for how bad the movie was, and the chucklefucks Andre Nemec and Christopher Yost acting like Bebop is just a wacky science fiction show that does not take place in a dystopian setting.

But you see it's empowering that Julia becomes a generic female villain whose all tragic and shit that is only there for the main character to feel bad about himself. It's also fine to make this female character exist as a glorified punching bag to remind us that the bad guy is a bad guy!

Seriously what they did with Julia is honest to god 10x worse than Faye on the virtue that Faye's change was really predictable that it being bad isn't much of a surprise, but fucking up Julia this way literally ruins a lot of Spike's character. Then again, Spike already is the worst part of this show due to John Cho's wooden acting so it really wouldn't make a difference between hamfisted attempts to act emotional.

I remember when everyone used to shit on crappy adaptations like Dragon Ball Evolution back in the day or just happily admit when a movie was bad regardless of who directed it or who starred in it. Nowadays though everything has to be praised or defended and any criticism is treated as some form of bigotry or terrorist provocation, either because:
A: People are so enamored with entertainment and brand names now that they're like their false idols and so must demonize the blasphemers
B: Almost every film (especially the bad ones) has a "queer shield" to immunize themselves from criticism
C: Any criticism is perceived as racist because of hollow casting choices made solely to shield themselves further
D: The entertainment industry is practically one synchronized monopoly now where everyone has each others backs

Even when a movie is so dogshit that they can't deny it like with Eternals, all the criticisms are toothless and try to be as nice as possible about their critiques. Unless of course the movie is somehow perceived as bigoted or not following the Hollywood conga line.

Where's the verbal violence? Where's the studio blood spray? Critics have always been tards and assholes who thought they knew more than everyone else, but now they're just toothless tards and assholes who still think they know more than everyone else unless the film is deemed somehow "problematic", in which case they'll don on the fake vampire teeth.

Just did episode 3 and it is only getting worse. Why anyone would go through so much work and trouble to capture so many visual aesthetics of the anime only to mess with everything like this blows my mind. I still don't blame the actors, as not even a fully animated Spike voiced by Steve Blum could have saved those lines and the fact some of the mess ups by the better actors didn't get better takes tells me the direction is not great. Vicious Is a weenie and Julia's arc is just dumb. Jet's backstory is completely fucked and I guess so is Spike's if his old rival is supposed to be Weenie Vicious.

But yeah, just imagine the dominatrix scene or 'Woodcock' acted by your perfect cast and you will see that the flawed casting is only the tip of the problems here. Even from the perspective of looking at this at it's own thing they keep emphasizing the connection to the anime at the most awkward moments.

A video on the show I actually enjoyed watching, hosts all my criticisms.

Generic smug video essay voice that spirals into reeeee it's bad but actuallty good if you gnore it's supposed to be Bebob and then turns into a tangent about how Bebop was always woke and progressive because of background diversity in a setting where humanity fucked off of Earth and colonized the solar system, including bringing up some random anime Watanabe did in the same setting decades later. Only watch this if you want some background noise because like all video essays it is you generic pretentious cunt voice using big words to look smart. He even fucking says that people wil;l take hs video out of context because reee angry fans and shit. Autist fucking lists off animes he likes made by people with different political backgrounds than his like it is a fucking achievment.

I just want E;R to rise from the grave.

Because capturing the visual aesthetics is easy, but capturing the feel is hard. A good adaptation doesn’t have to constantly call back to its source material with shallow fanservice just to keep you interested.

he's not wrong.this adapation is a way for big media to give talentless hack minorities a paycheck. it wasnt meant to be a interesting or artistic.

its a vehicle for netflix to say "we hire diversely! subscribe to support diversity!"

is anyone going to say these actors and actresses have talent or putting any effory into their craft?

I mean Jet’s actor is pretty good and is probably the best actor on the show. Plus he’s the only one to not do or say anything stupid like Spike and Faye’s actors.

It’s not even a diversity thing with this show since the original bebop had a pretty diverse cast. It’s just a duo of hacks who saw the original bebop, hated it, and wanted to make it “better” given Americans in Hollywood tend to treat foreign media as inferior.

MB is a fucking retarded cuck and another horrible shitty take is nothing new on his book. Its just another way to grift on woke points, this nigga is a legit spineless shill, Anitube being so shit and devoid of quality creators is the only reason he can still make a living out of his terrible content.

MB is a blatant shill for CrunchyRoll and made that horrendous "Basement Order" for Jojo, so of course his opinions are retarded

So I used my otaku-street-cred to reach out and privately ask Watanabe what he thought of Netflix' Cowboy Beburp, this was his reply:

I hate how Netflix thinks that above all a reboot MUST "subvert expectations". They do shit like this on purpose to make fans of the original pissed and drive more buzz about it. They did it with He-Man, they did it with Death Note, they do it with every fucking pre-established property they molest.
I think that they are working under the wrong impression that by deviating from the original in key aspects, they catch the long-time fans off guard and they go "Oh wow, I did not expect this to happen! With this change from the original, I don't know what is going to happen next, so I am now way more invested in the show and its plot!"

I genuinely think that aside from "fixing" the story with their plebeian understanding of the OG stories, they also think that by going out of their way to throw the original storyline under the bus, they draw in the OG fans (who might not have watched the show cause they 'already know how it's going to pan out').

And since these people are massively incompetent idiots high on their own farts, they have not yet understood the pattern that every other adaptation or rehash that did this failed miserably.

But cramming in unnecessary domestic abuse subplots that weren't in the original and turning a straight woman gay and giving her a naked sex scene with another woman is totally not misogynistic at all.
It's quite amazing how at some point the fetishization of women as mere lipstick-lesbian fanservice was sold off as being progressive and pro-LGBT, when we all know it's just someone's fetish breaking its way into softcore porn scenes.

It blows my fucking mind, disgusting perverted Hollywood sexpests have brainwashed audiences into accepting their filthy depraved indulgence of fetishes as a political message that's socially acceptable and culturally desirable.

In that light, "Cuties" attempting to do the same with pedophilia is almost a natural progression when you think about it. Just a matter of time until someone comes along that doesn't just try to do it with the most dude-bro fetish of them all, eventually it'll be a pedo """"minor-attracted person"""".

The fans were evil for not liking Donte because they "don't like change" and they should, for some reason, let something that bills itself as a Devil May Cry game "be its own thing".
It still gets my piss to a boil that the press pretended the fans should not act like they are "entitled" to receive a decent title in a game series that was profitable over the course of a decade thanks to their investment in said franchise. The press had the gall to use the word "entitled" as if it was something negative. For fuck's sake, these fans paid a shitton of money for these games, they fucking deserve respect by those that make a game that is trying to sell on the name alone. These fans deserve a game that they can enjoy. They are the stakeholders and foundation for the past economic success of that franchise, you better fucking damn well acknowledge that they are "entitled" to a good fucking game and you better fucking not pretend that being "entitled" is bad behaviour on their part or not absolutely and a hundred fucking percent fucking appropriate.

And you wanna know the best fucking bit? I have never played any DMC and I don't intend to. It's not even remotely my cup of tea. But you better fucking believe I feel with my fellow vidya-bros that had to witness their iconic game franchise being violated by the likes of that greasy greek hack fraud faggot, that came up with that terrible fucking remake.

Rewatching stuff and it really gets worse that they gave Jet a daughter since it would fuck his dynamic up with Ed since Jet treated Ed in the original as someone that could've been his kid, but fuck it knowing how Live Action Bebop handles subtlety, there is definitely going to be a "touching" talk between Jet and Ed where Jet opens up how Ed is like a daughter to him since his original one left him.

It really makes me bewildered how the live action version is this cartoonishly simple.

they gave Jet a daughter
Making him a father also adds nothing to Jet that we don't already get in his original incarnation. In fact I felt like giving him a daughter indirectly made him shittier at combat because they went too far in trying to make him seem like a poor dad who can't catch a break, all he does is get his ass beat over and over in the first few episodes. I wonder how that actor felt when the cameras rolled and Woodcock started flirting with him. Also who even gives a shit about the daughter? She has zero personality of her own and is just Jet's satellite character and I'm almost offended that they made her kidnapping pivotal to the first half of the finale, they really had to shoehorn their female black OC in there...

They made her the kidnap victim because they couldn’t let Faye be captured like in the original, because she’s a #girlboss lesbian that don’t need need no man, which is why we get that incredibly cringy “welcome to the ouch, motherfuckers” as Faye is made the hero of the scene after Jet and Spike fail.

That MCU humour framing is so strong that I thought they were making a lol epic!! reference or a callback to something but no it really is just her yelling that line like a retard. I can't believe they didn't think that would ruin the gravitas of their final fucking fight.

MCU at least tends to keep their quips a bit underplayed, like a snarky comment or something. Not-Faye literally goes full bugged out eyes and screams out her line before hollering like an insane person.

Not!Faye's issue with this shit writing is how the writers try super hard to make her cool that it feels like she's overcompensating whereas she was a naturally cool character in the original show because she wasn't as much of a try-hard.
