If we'd actually learned anything from this, it would have been nice to normalize wearing a courtesy mask in public when you have respiratory crud, a protective mask when you're flying cross-country. Also if people learned to wash their hands ever.

Instead the COVID-deniers just doubled down on being rude and anti-hygienic to teach a lesson, and the COVID-overreactors fixate on the highly-visible measures and not the pragmatic ones.

Businesses should be bragging about their upgraded ventilation systems, but instead even the hospital just prints some more HEROS WORK HERE signs. Coulda jury-rigged the whole hospital into negative-airflow rooms, one at a time, but instead it's just white-knuckling it, insincere thank-yous, and learning/planning absolutely nothing.

There were some lunatics on the pro-vaccine side, but they were a small part of it, whereas the anti-vaccine side is almost completely dominated by conspiracy theorists.

Even the pro-vaccine argument is misunderstood by the other side. The push to vaccinate the young and healthy was to stop the spread to the vulnerable. Nobody serious has ever claimed that everyone was at risk. People who got vaccinated also don't care about Covid anymore. The only people I have ever seen wear masks voluntarily are the elderly and Asians. I have never seen a White person under 50 wear a mask voluntarily, and in the last year I have only seen one old lady wear one.

The people who keep Covid alive are the vaccine conspiracy theorists who claim every death, seizure and miscarriage as a Covid vaccine side effect. When Covid started, I was on the anti-lockdown side and I was in several anti-lockdown groups. When it was announced that a vaccine would be developed, the conspiracy theories started. I have talked with a 40-something father who was afraid that vaccinated people would "shed" the vaccine on his kids and turn them magnetic and possibly kill them. I have seen teenagers being told that they would be infertile and have their hearts explode because they took the vaccine. If this was all ironic, it was very elaborate and caused a lot of mental harm to the people who didn't get it.
