Tennis is probably the one women's sport that men love to watch. It doesn't beat beach volley, but still it is highly heterosexual.

Of course Gene is into Ava. Look at her confident, yet submissive, pose as she yields to his manly instruction and grasps her tennis racket firmly around the hilt. Then there is the 'just been fucked' collar of her dress, the vampish pout of her lips, and the strong bisexual vibes that she gives off, which will be attractive to a man like Gene who is, no doubt, contemplating his first MFF threesome.
Maybe Jon is doing resarch for his next book?...... only time will tell.
Compare all that to the slumped posture of Ava's dowdy rival, who is wearing what appears to be a pair of boarding school issue pyjamas that she has converted into culottes. Her needlework skills will be of no use to her in the dating arena. She holds her racket like she hasn't got a clue what to do with it. Imagine if Jon Kent was drawn in this pose. There would be uproar within the LGBTQ community.
As an aside, this comic was published in 1955. Therefore all of the characters in this true to life social document would now be in their 70s or 80s, or possibly dead. On a positive note, I don't think that either Jean or Ava were ever trademarked as IPs, meaning that Ya Boi Zack could probably incorporate them into the Jawbreakers team with minimal legal hassle.
