College Students Plan to Skip Class for Palestine

After the encampment strategy ‘did not win,’ young socialists are plotting a national strike to protest the ‘Israeli-American genocide.’

This fall, university classrooms could be surprisingly quiet. And not because students on campus aren’t protesting—in fact, quite the opposite.

To protest what they see as the “the Israeli-American genocide of Palestine,” the Young Democratic Socialists of America is planning a national student strike, encouraging college students to “disrupt campus life” by skipping class.

The plans for a “Student Strike for Palestine” are laid out in the YDSA’s recent resolution, which calls upon the organization’s more than 100 university chapters across the country—including at Columbia, UCLA, and NYU—to “organize democratically-run campaigns demanding their school’s divestment from Israel, a ceasefire in Gaza, and free speech on campus.”

The resolution is unclear about when the strike would happen or for how long. It states that the ultimate goal of the strike is to work toward “Palestinian liberation.”

The YDSA did not respond to a Free Press request for comment.

This skip-school strategy diverges from the “tentifada” of last spring—where hundreds of college students camped out on campuses nationwide, demanding their universities divest from Israel. YDSA organizer Erin Lawson, an NYU graduate, has stated that this fall’s plan should have more impact.

“Most encampments did not win,” Lawson wrote in a July 12 article for the YDSA’s publication The Activist, even though they were “the largest national student movement of our lifetimes.”

A strike, on the other hand, “shakes the very foundation of the university to its core,” she added.

“No one can ignore large swathes of empty classrooms,” she wrote. “No one can just turn around and plug their ears when the university can no longer call itself a university.”

The strike plan is “ambitious,” Lawson continued, “demanding a lot of hard work.” But “as students who live in the belly of the beast, we have the responsibility to demand that our institutions take our tuition money out of Israel.

“And we don’t win by asking politely. We don’t win by running autonomous actions. We win by organizing together across the nation and leveraging all of our power against our universities, upending the very social fabric of our campuses until our administration has no choice but to listen to our collective voice: disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not rest.”

According to the resolution, the YDSA plans to create a national movement by forming a “Palestine Committee” that will distribute “political-education materials” and provide “organizing trainings” to “define the nature of a student strike, explain why a student strike is strategic in terms of YDSA winning our demands, and help plan an escalatory campaign timeline for chapters.”

The YDSA has also pledged to work “in coalition with other organizations,” such as the Palestinian Youth Movement and Students for Justice in Palestine, to force their universities to divest from what they call “Israel’s Zionist colonial project.”

The YDSA is the youth wing of the Democratic Socialists of America, the far-left party that once championed the political careers of politicians like Rashida Tlaib, Cori Bush, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez—though Ocasio-Cortez lost the DSA’s endorsement last month because she did not display enough of a “commitment to Palestinian liberation.”

Ran Kivetz, an Israeli professor at the Columbia Business School who has been outspoken about antisemitism on campus, said that if protesters follow through on their threats to skip school, they should know “there are ramifications.”

If the students don’t show up for class, he said, “they will fail.”

But shutting down the strike requires university administrators to apply the rules, which he said they failed to do last spring when dozens of protestors broke into a campus building and smashed windows, vandalized classrooms, and held three janitors hostage. Though Columbia’s president Minouche Shafik gave police the green light to arrest the protestors, nearly all charges against them have been dropped, and some students had their suspensions lifted by the university.

“Have they learned their lesson?” Kivetz wondered about Columbia’s administrators. “Will they now apply their existing rules?”

“I hope they will,” he added. “But I don’t have confidence that they’ll do that.”

i mean, this just makes me want to vitrify palestine even more.

its bad enough "palestine" (air quotes because there has never been any such country) is inhabited primarily by satanists, pedophiles and faggots

but i want to dust it even more just to make liberal kids mad and cry

The leftist worldview assumes that after all the "minority" groups overthrow the white straight Christian male oppressor class, they'll all live together in the socialist utopia and sing Kumbaya.
the idea of christians being oppressors came from muslims, because they worship satan

Satan told mohammed, muslims told hitler, hitler told the government, government told school kids

And this will do what? It's college. You pay for the class whether you go or not. If you don't pass, it's your grades and class requirements that suffer. And not attending classes and maintaining grades gives the school a legitimate reason to expell you.

So...not seeing how the school loses in any way.
Should note that some professors WILL automatically flunk you/give you an F if you miss class. Learned that the hard way when I got pulled aside/made to stay after class a couple of times and was threatened with an automatic F if I missed any more classes after skipping a couple.

Boycotting your college classes by skipping them is a lot like buying a ticket to a movie in a theater and then not going. The college still has your parents' money.

Since they care so much about Palestine, why don't they buy a one-way flight to Gaza?

It is really hard to try and sway these pro-pal kids towards antisemitism. They compartmentalize it all so easily and not see any irony or overlap. Almost like someone is playing both sides and giving them carefully crafted talking points….

Make me think Palestine is just a “let it happen on purpose” story for some reason I cannot fathom to understand.

I bought the “Israel wants to build a secondary canal to the Red Sea” theory in the initial days. But with not one shovel digging into the ground, it feels like it may be some 5d chess my goy mind cannot possibly understand.

The schools might care, for one reason.

The various ranking guides that compare universities to one another use four-year graduation rates as one of their indicators of quality (good schools graduate most of their people in the four-year time frame). A ton of kids having to take an extra year would be good for university coffers in the short term but will hurt their rankings and therefore next year's crop of applicants will be lower quality, which in turn creates a scenario where they have to admit people with lower scores, which lowers the ranking more...it can set off a death spiral, in the worst case scenario.

Just expel them. Imagine how amazing college would be if you flushed all the leftist retards permanently.

Theyre going to fuck over these schools but good using that same tactic mass-reserving seats at a trump rally. Chuds wont even be able to get into schools any more! Admin is befuddled by all the empty seats!
Also make sure to pay the nonrefundable tuition required so the chuds can't get in. This is saving our democracy we're talking about!

This seems like either a massive gamble or they have a spectacular sense of their own importance. They won’t get the numbers they did with the futile camps and it may end up very easy to ignore. It’ll fizzle out by Christmas at most.

Why do they care about Palestine? Most college students who do this stuff are LGBTQP anyway, have they considered that Palestine and it's religion hates faggots?
Look at the sign. Those are not students but their ideological handlers (professors, high rank activists, NGO sponsors). Those freaks actually got a City of Chicago permission to demonstrate outside the upcoming DNC so it's going to be a glorious shitshow.

Sooo...they're still registering for classes this semester, meaning they're still handing Daddy's money and/or recycling the student aid they got from the school for being a sympathetic refugee of color to the University Administration, all the while allowing professors to teach and operate in less disruptive classrooms/campuses?
I fail to see how that's anything but a win/win from the schools' side. I'd be mega surprised if any dean tried to force professors to pass these students for not showing up.

The woman on the left looks like a lesbian, the woman next to her looks like a junkie and the men on the right look like homeless people. Only the guy on the left has a somewhat presentable appearance.

In a sane world I'd agree with you, but Colleges are not merely a part of clown world, they are the nine circuses of hell itself, manifest upon this earth. There is absolutely a chance of some retarded dean bending policy to get them through if for no other reason than to protect their own political interests and to ensure the students keep in good standing to get more loans to pay for the next semester.

But as far as I'm concerned, this is a win-win situation. Either retards get filtered out of college by their own ignorant virtue signaling, or colleges destroy yet another remaining pillar of their reputation and validity by turning just a few more programs into straight up degree mills to try and protect students from their own deliberate stupidity.

It will do the square root of fuck all, you daft girl. If the bin men go on strike, people suffer. If nurses or firemen strike, or the people who DO stuff and keep society running strike, people suffer. You are a student. If you fail to turn up to lectures nobody will give a shit. You already paid for the term. The remaining students get more time with the people teaching them. The postdoc staff get some time free, and the tutors and lecturers have a reduced workload. Strike all you like.
(I dont actually remember if anyone took attendance at lectures. For the ‘sit and listen to this and make notes and read about it’ we had a lecture theatre full of students and nobody took a register. You’d just fail if you couldn’t do the exams at the end. They took attendance for lab classes, I remember that. But mainly they expected you to be an adult, and gave you a series of several three hour, very tough exams at the end of each course, and if you failed it, tough. )
You are a useless stage of society, paying massive amounts of money for a degree that’s indoctrination. You being there or not shakes nothing whatsoever to its core.
Now if you were a bin man, you’d have leverage.

I’m rather curious if the DNC will actually happen. After all, they already anointed their candidate, why do they need to go to Chicago?
