Causes advanced by democratic socialists are many: tuition-free college, universal health care, a federal jobs guarantee, a “living wage,” and much more.

Now they’re adding a new “right” to the list — the right to eight hours of sleep per night. Apparently, gone are the days when pulling an all-nighter is a rite of passage for college kids.

A group of democratic socialist students at the Georgia Institute of Technology has launched a campaign demanding that campus leaders allow for eight hours of sleep every night.

“We’re beginning our 8 Hours Campaign! If you are not getting enough sleep due to coursework overload or academic committments [sic], email us! We will advocate for you; confronting professors, challenging administration, and so forth to make a real committment [sic] to the health of every student. Everyone deserves 8 hours of sleep,” stated an emailed memo from the Young Democratic Socialists of America at Georgia Tech obtained by The College Fix.

The email was sent out in early November, and the group has since upped the ante.

More recently, on Dec. 6, it published an open letter to university President George Peterson outlining their formal grievances regarding mental health on campus and alluding to students’ suffering sleep cycles.

“Some professors still hold their students to unreasonable expectations. There are professors who announce to their students that losing sleep and pulling all-nighters to finish assignments is expected for them to excel in the course,” the letter states. “ … This behavior is unacceptable.”

The letter also calls for the university to hire more counselors and psychiatrists, and demands that the campus make classes easier and less competitive and reduce student coursework.

“Classes should be graded based on students learning course material as well as transparent criteria of course objectives, instead of through opaque bell curves that pit students against each other,” the letter states.

They also want campus leaders to “eliminate all fees for psychiatry appointments.”

So far, hundreds of students have signed the letter. As for the letters’ signers, some have expressed praise for the YDSA chapter for fighting for healthcare, calling it a “right.”

The College Fix has reached out multiple times to members of the Young Democratic Socialists of America at Georgia Tech for comment. They have ignored those requests.

But in addition to calling for eight hours of sleep every night, they have also begun calling for eight hours of free time, too.

With the growing popularity of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and democratic socialism among young people, the Young Democratic Socialists of America has not steered away from controversy. Earlier this year the national organization urged socialists to “infiltrate” higher education, while more recently the Georgia Tech chapter launched a petition to disinvite Condoleezza Rice from speaking at the university’s December commencement.

Hahhaaa... Oh wait they're serious. Let me laugh even harder. :story:

TOUGHEN THE FUCK UP AND GET GOOD! Now I do agree those workloads got unreasonable at times but guess what, that is real life. Nothing comes easy, nothing comes free, and whining should not be tolerated.

This part is almost justifiable, given how demonstrably useless of a lark college education is becoming.

But then...

They also want campus leaders to “eliminate all fees for psychiatry appointments.”
Fuck OFF. It's like demanding caviar for your precious toast points.

I thought college education was all about learning how to understand the hardships of the lesser world, but apparently it's a holodeck where actual suffering shouldn't be required

The Young Democratic Socialists of America, an organization whose 2018 active member and poster child is recently elected congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez, who didn't even plan for the costs to move to DC and start the job she campaigned for, is demanding shit they could very well budget for on their own if they weren't such a rabble of goddamn muppets? Color me fucking shocked.

I am certain all this coddling will make for stronger, more useful members of society.

Thank you, democratic socialists!

Shhh! No one tell them about working a full-time job!

But on the upside, with their degrees in gender studies, that's something they'll never have to worry about.

You choose to be such a lazy goddamned moron that you end up pulling an all-nighter despite being told countless times that "You only live once" meant using your time on this planet wisely and not wasting it on self-gratification.

Those college papers keep on plummeting in value;
"So I hear you graduated from Georgia Tech? Anything noteworthy?"
"I demanded that the school works on my schedule so that I can sleep in after a night of drinking and neglecting my responsibilities."
"Alright. Here's our employee handbook - I won't bother telling you why I won't be hiring you, just rest assured that you'd break everything in here. I'd tell you to read it but homework doesn't sound like your strongest suit. Get out, and do not use the restroom."

literally nobody is requiring you to take six courses a semester, if you have some prof giving ridiculous workloads, just take less classes
And if you're going to take on that workload then that is on you. It's not the college's job to accommodate over-zealousness.

EDIT: And it's not a college's job to go easy on fluff majors or the lazy either. I've been there, I've done this, and it was non stop bullshit on top of working full time.

Última edición:
I paid my way through university being a club dj. I was out until 3am most nights and up for most classes at 8am. This generation of college kids are weak af...

I can understand that homework and extra-curricular shit and a job can be a lot to manage but your hours of sleep are really up to you.
Even if you have insomnia or something that effects your sleeping habits that isn't the job of your school to fix. I know so many people that routinely stayed up past 2 in the morning and were perplexed why they were so tired the next day at school. Trust me, your videogames and Netflix will still be there tomorrow in the afternoon. Go to bed early. Your brain will thank you.

I was working full time at a shit retail job, going to classes, and doing lab work on top of it at the same time. It was awful, it was bullshit, I was constantly sleep deprived, and I only kept it up for a couple of semesters, but it was fucking doable and other people had it harder than me. That's life. Suck it up.

Also maybe if you spent less time demanding students take courses in sensitivity and intersectional gender fucknuts or whatever they'd have time to sleep.
