the game is like that at the core, only paradox can fix it but why would they, zero competition.I like Cities Skylines and own most of the expansion packs, but the two things that I don't like are the easy difficulty and the music. It seems very hard to make a city go bankrupt, and so it plays more like a sandbox than a simulator. The entire soundtrack is also kind of disjointed, so I run a steam workshop mod that replaces the soundtrack with SimCity music. If anyone knows of any mods that make it run more like the financial simulation of SC games, Id' love to know about them.
City skylines simulation has never been good in my opinion. I have a feeling it’s due to the fact that it was built off a traffic management engine more than it was a city simulator.I like Cities Skylines and own most of the expansion packs, but the two things that I don't like are the easy difficulty and the music. I feel like SimCity was a game that looked dumb, but was really smart under the hood where city skylines looks really smart but under the hood it’s really dumb.
>managing a city means that I shouldn't have to spend forever keeping up with traffic and the rest of my logisticsCity skylines simulation has never been good in my opinion. I have a feeling it’s due to the fact that it was built off a traffic management engine more than it was a city simulator.
I didn’t mean you shouldn’t deal with traffic. What I’m getting at is ALL you deal with is traffic in cities skylines.>managing a city means that I shouldn't have to spend forever keeping up with traffic and the rest of my logistics
What do you think city planning is?
I get that it's frustrating sometimes because you can't do more intricate things without having every DLC and 6 thrembillion mods though. I would loveeeeeeeeeee to make Soviet style micordistricts in CS1.
This is pretty true and why it feels like such a pointless game. SC4 has traffic management, and sure it might even be the largest obstacle. But there were quite a few other "lose" conditions that made it feel like a much fuller city management sim.I didn’t mean you shouldn’t deal with traffic. I have never once had to touch taxes or budgets.
The only “city ordinances” that I do interact with are to help traffic / promote trains, and even then it’s not evident if it works.
And if I was to go and do goofy shit like mega tax everyone, nothing happens. No riots, no housing collapse, no mega mansions or slums. Just nothing.
What I don't like about the games tax system is that you can never go above 12% most of the time and it can't vary by district. I also don't like how every person who moves into the city has to start out as completely uneducated and that we can't mess with the zoned buildings to have them like set back a bit further from the road or add props directly on them unless you have mods to do it.I have never once had to touch taxes or budgets.
It wouldn't be that bad if they did it correctly. My first unmodded C:S run went something like this:This is pretty true and why it feels like such a pointless game. C:S is just paint by the numbers until, uh oh, gotta adjust traffic.
The problem is that C:S treats noise pollution like something that's ultra deadly so if you have any traffic and residential zones anywhere near roads with more than two lanes everyone gets sick which fills your roads with endless ambulances. The dozens of ambulances causes more traffic so they can't get there in time so the people start dying. Then you have dozens of hearses causing even more traffic jams which prevents them from picking up the corpses which causes builds to be abandoned. This is why I always run a mod that removes noise pollution. It wouldn't be that bad if they did it correctly. My first unmodded C:S run went something like this:
- build basic RCI to get things started, literally just a few blocks
- cars cram the streets (which IRL doesn't happen, suburban streets are basically ghost towns)
- game demands that I put in clinics because people are getting sick, presumably from all the traffic
- put in clinic
- somehow the clinic's radius isn't more than two blocks
- people start dying
- hearses cram the streets to take people to the cemetery
This didn't happen with SimCity 4 (it only received a few official patches), the unmodded traffic issues only really appeared when your city started to get going. This was also in February 2016, almost a year after release and two DLCs, meaning that they had plenty of time and resources to fix this.
The fact that this was NEVER patched really says a lot about how C:S is developed and where developer priorities are. The whole development was like this:The problem is that C:S treats noise pollution like something that's ultra deadly so if you have any traffic and residential zones anywhere near roads with more than two lanes everyone gets sick which fills your roads with endless ambulances. I wish they had made slums and homeless camps so I could live out my Robert Moses fantasies by running highways through tenement districts to service the richer districts. But no, everything is clean and beautiful. The fact that this was NEVER patched really says a lot about how C:S is developed and where developer priorities are. The whole development was like this:
player: "Hey, I found [game-breaking bug], could you put it in the next patch?"
CO: "Our NEW downloadable content, Hobotown, lets you put in hobo encampments, drag and drop exciting NEW items like the Dung Pile, the Camping Tent, and the Mound of Trash...also...wait for it, NEW HATS FOR CHIRPER!!!"
I really just wanted the giant slumlord apartments that you could get in SC. Idk, those games had so much more flavor.I wish they had made slums and homeless camps so I could live out my Robert Moses fantasies by running highways through tenement districts to service the richer districts. It used to be a thing in SC3K. I remember the granny complaining about high property taxes (caused by risen property values). For some reason, they removed it for SC4.Honestly I hate how crime isn't really a factor in newer games as it was funny that the default for SimCity was a police state. Also I hate the fact that property values are the end all be all and pops don't have economic brackets where actually having too high property values everywhere is a bad thing
