In her 1999 album Ancient And Modern, Anne Dudley, founder of the British electronic outfit Art of Noise, rearranges traditional and classical choral pieces. I had expected the new rearrangements to be very electronic. They are not so, instead Dudley makes ample use of tuned percussion (especially the marimba) and rich orchestral layers. Her "Veni Emmanuel" transfixes me with not one but two ostinatos coursing through the music
"Coventry Carol" is garbed in heavy strings redolent of film music, and Dudley enhances the drama by giving the "Herod The King..." verse to the male chorus.

Heard this for the first time on the radio the other day. Someone very close to me passed away this time last year, and one of my favorite cats was killed by a car last week, and another one has gone missing, so despite my love of the Christmas season, these past few days have been rough.
