hey there - new to this thread. Just wanted a head count.
I am in the Southern USA where both Protestants and Catholics go to "Vacation Bible School" (VBS) in summer, a big tradition.
In other US locations, it is something only (or mostly only) Protestants do, which I didn't know until one of the other parents (originally from Pacific NW) mentioned to me how pleased she was to find a Catholic version.
It was started by Protestants, but now everyone does it.
Not sure if the Orthodox do?
Did anyone here grow up attending VBS? The Lutherans are said to be the best at actual Bible study, but of course, the Baptists always have the best snacks & lunches.
Has anyone sent their kids to VBS and how did they like it?
Southern kids really like it, maybe because of the high attendance, unlike Sunday Schools. (Its a mob, and kids love mobs of other kids.) Around here, people often send their kids even if they are themselves unchurched.
Observations, opinions and memories welcome.

If this were true they wouldn't be protestant.
Banter aside, we didn't have VBS where I grew up but I see it in the parish bulletins where I live now. I cannot comment on how popular it is here, just that it exists.

My wife thinks anything that gets them thinking about God & also succeeds in getting them offline for a period, is a miracle all by itself.
Kids growing up religiously illiterate en masse, we have our work cut out for us.

I went to them annually from age 6 to about age 13, theyre usually themed around something like under the sea, a specific continent, or just an aesthetic like high tech. Theres lots of games, songs, social time with other kids, snacks, and ofc sunday school level christian education. The schedule will go something like
Meet Up
Introduction
Introduce biblical idea
Song
Game
Small group with other games/activities
Snack
Game
Elaborate on biblical idea
Finish for the day, with further ideas/elaboration set up for the next day
All around harmless fun,

It is worth thinking about it long and hard, how has my own politics/nation made me cast away my humanity and for what? If anybody ever tells you Jesus never existed you can be assured they know very little about the topic.
To quote the Atheist new Testament scholar Dr. Bart Ehrman:
"Jesus was a Jewish man, known to be a preacher and teacher, who was crucified (a Roman form of execution) in Jerusalem during the reign of the Roman emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was the governor of Judea. Even though this is the view of nearly every trained scholar on the planet, it is not the view of a group of writers who are usually labeled, and often label themselves, mythicists." (Ehrman, Bart D. Did Jesus Exist?: The Historical Argument for Jesus of Nazareth. HarperOne, an Imprint of HarperCollinsPublishers, 2013)
As far as I'm aware of the tens of thousands of people with relevant credentials (Phds in History/Philosophy/New Testament studies) only two don't believe Jesus existed.
Ehrman (again an Atheist) has stated that, despite knowing thousands of trained New Testament scholars he has never met a single professor at any university's theology or seminary department who believes Jesus didn't exist. He has compared a Jesus mythicist teaching in a New Testament studies department to a Young Earth Creationist teaching at a Universities Biology department (a dig at myself).
The reason why virtually everyone agrees Jesus existed and was crucified is because the evidence for this is overwhelming. Bart Ehrman has identified 15 independent sources from within the first 100 years of Jesus's life for Jesus's crucifixion. Gary Habermas has identified 45 contempoary (from within 150-170 years) sources for Jesus life, of which 28 sources attest to his crucifixion (12 of which are non-Christian sources) (Habermas, Gary R. Historical Jesus, 1996, page 252) As a matter of fact the death of Jesus is the most recorded event in ancient non-Christian history (Habermas, Gary R. Historical Jesus, 1996, page 281).
The four Gospels were written within 30-65 years of Jesus's life. For reference the oldest surviving biography of Alexander the Great (Diodorus) is from about 300 years after his life. Two of the three oldest biographies of Augustus, who was Emporer when Jesus died, are older than the entire New Testament. Remarkably all books of the New Testmanet survive in full. This is almost unheard of with ancient histories. Of the 142 books of Roman history by Livy 107 have been lost. Of the 30 books of Tacitus's history nearly half is lost.
