Well, this will be interesting.

Fight Club is one of those films that has achieved a massive cult following over the last 20 years or so.

And now, years later, an all-female spin on the movie is being released.

A new indie film called Chick Fight tells the story of an all-female fight club, and we're intrigued.
The new movie will star Malin Akerman Bella Thorne and Alec Baldwin - an impressive lineup.
According to Deadline:
"Akerman stars as Anna, who still hasn’t reconciled with the recent death of her adored mother. She’s just discovered that her loving and supportive father is gay, and she accidentally burns down her uninsured coffee shop after learning a thrown joint and a spilled bottle of moonshine don’t mix."

"Knowing Anna needs to be abruptly shaken and stirred from her deep funk, her best friend takes her to an all-women underground fight club, where she encounters an eclectic cast of characters."
At the fight club, Anna meets Olivia (played by Bella Thorne), who is the most brutal fighter, and the pair become rivals in all aspects of life, not just in the ring.
Anna is helped by solitary trainer Jack Murphy (Alec Baldwin), who helps Anna find "her inner strength and true purpose in the most primal of ways".
Chick Fight begins filming in January 2020.

The things you used to own, now they own you.

Maybe they could make it interesting. Have the girls get together and start fighting. Voice in head telling main girl she's the best, no one can stop her. Starts a fight with a man who beats her down in front of the whole club. Make the moral be 'you're your own worst enemy.' Rather than focus on masculinity focus on the idea of force and how you can get what you want when you exert it, but you will eventually confront someone who will not break.

Don't see a lot of ways to make it a successful movie. Certainly won't be better than the original.

It's possible. But there's no way a studio in 2019 would greenlight it. The description already shows they're approaching it badly--why does she need a trainer? The point of Fight Club was not to win the fights or climb a tournament ladder; the point was to unleash the violence you already had, raw and unfiltered.

If they were going to do a female adaptation in good faith, they'd have to properly gender flip the main thesis of the original. Modern consumerist society had neutered males, devalued their masculine nature, and scorned traditional masculine expression. The underground Club was a reclamation of masculinity in the most brutal, primal way.

So Chick Fight would have to lament that modern consumerist society had neutered women by devaluing their inherent feminine nature, and bemoan the scorning of traditional feminine expression. The underground Club would become a place to reclaim traditional feminine expressions. In Current Year's gender confusion, you could see that kind of female re-awakening and discovery being quite subversive.

But how do you think they'll reclaim femininity in an underground Club... for fighting? Not that it matters; the very second someone talks about the "feminine nature of women", the REEEEEEing about TERFs will start up and the unpersoning will begin.

(You could see a revisionist TERF history pulling it off, actually. The brand of feminism that equates feminine mystique with power, that celebrates witchcraft and private sexual dominance as female power moves, etc. But no one has the guts to make that kind of movie while showing the negative, destructive side it leads to, like how Fight Club evolved into Project Mayhem.)

You know that part in the beginning where Marla is shown to be full of shit because she's at the prostate cancer support group? That'd never fly today and it's going to be twisted into the love interest being a stunning and brave troon.

If they wanted to do that, they should adapt a different Palahniuk book instead: Invisible Monsters

you're all retards. the movie isn't a remake, it's literally just a movie that involves a fight club, like hundreds before it. stop trusting these shitty articles from shitty websites.

But Fight Club wasn't actually about fighting, it was an allegory for the desensitization of modern consumer culture and nihilism and the danger of finding solace in the opposite end of the spectrum. That ultimate destruction of society wasn't an answer and trying to find a balanced life and meaning was the important thing.

'Tyler Durden' isn't a good person or a character, his own freedom from soul crushing ennui and nihilism is another form of nihilism. Its the danger of not understanding.

It doesn't matter if it was men or women, it was supposed to be a critique on society as a whole. People who think 'Tyler Durden' is cool are idiots. The message of Fight Club is against Durden and the realization that ennui stems from oneself, culture in either direction will not relieve it. The message is extremely strong and 'just women now' really doesn't add anything to the original.

'Chick Fight' sounds like a shitty 80s softcore B-movie.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more backlash against this movie. I remember when an all-female Lord of the Flies film was announced and then quietly got cancelled after people (mostly women) got pissed and said it would be "unrealistic" for women to be in conflict with one another. Does such a critique not stand when it comes to this movie?

The idea makes complete sense. The original fight club was a male empowerment film about being forced by society into becoming a corporate slave that's only goal in life is to consume (with moderation on how far the resistance should be). It's about as wrong think as possible in modern Hollywood.

So instead they make the film about female empowerment (especially since the modern idea that the only way a woman "should" act is like a man) against the patriarchy forcing women to not consume and be corporate slaves (a message that might had merit 40 years ago). You can assume the film will feature an empowered woman beating an incel. The film will likely end with the female protagonist bombing wall street and other corporations that are seen as male dominated.

i expect something about a bunch of stronk womyn training to fight the patriarchy (literally) and the film culminates in the protagonist girl doing a prize fight against a cis het white male incel drumpf supporter who wears confederate flag patterned gloves and a MAGA hat in the ring
of course she heroically wins the fight by knock-out in the first round, in her victory speech she drops a few quotes from germaine greer and yells "women of the world unite! #resist #metoo", then the credits roll

she accidentally burns down her uninsured coffee shop after learning a thrown joint and a spilled bottle of moonshine don’t mix.

The secret to making characters you identify with is making them do 16 consecutive retarded things at once to advance the plot because figuring out a more logical and realistic way to do it is impossible.
