I've brought it up before but we know nothing about the rounds used other than that they are 30-06. It's possible it was very old ammo, and it's possible it was hand reloaded by the grandpa who originally owned the rifle. They could have been filled with intentionally less powder than factory ammo.

Yep 100% and if he was using his grandpa's old rifle then the is a less than zero chance that he was using grandpa's old ammo.
In which case it could have been loaded with something like a 150 grain round nose projectile which will loose a lot of energy and velocity. But this is all just speculation given we don't know about rounds used.

So I actually typed up a long response but then deleted it. I am not trying to start an argument that a 30-06 wasn't used, but simply curious why the sound doesn't match up. There are plenty of youtube videos now (like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKK4ATVHk8Q) that are blowing up stuff with the 30-06. That said, "apparently" MLK was shot with a 30-06 and it hit his jaw and lodged into his shoulder. It too didn't pass through but in his case he was quite a bit more messed up. So I dunno
