The weight of what he did is going to keep crushing down on his Mormon upbringing, the gravity of the death penalty is going to keep crushing down on him, the fact that he's never going to see his boyfriend again and that all his friends are going to walk free while he's either facing the firing squad or life without the possibility of parole is going to keep crushing down on him. They torture you by NOT torturing you in jail. 24-hour lockdowns in a freezing cold room, no blanket, where the bright lights never turn off, no sense of time and you're completely disoriented with nothing to do. This kid is going to be mentally broken and snitching on everybody who knew about it by THURSDAY. After a week of that suicide watch which is utter hell, he's going to tell them everyone who was involved from A to Z in exchange for a Bible so he has something to fucking READ.
Give him one or two months off the internet, cut him off from discord validation, and he'll probably feel genuine regret which will ultimately cause more suffering than his interrogation or death. People who spend their lives in prison end up regretting it one way or another, and if he has any conscience left he's going to realize the implications that his parents still love and support him even after he ruined their lives.

As is the case with most death penalty cases, they aren't actually looking for a death penalty. They're using the death penalty as leverage to get this kid to snitch on everyone who was involved. And he will snitch. Like I said, the gravity of this now that he's sitting alone in a cell every night with nothing to do is going to be killing him within the week.
