Maybe im a class 8 retard (I am) but my understanding of firearms is that you can use the serial number to trace its EXACT providence. was it defaced? My thinking is that leaving the firearm behind means a level of obfuscation has taken place that can usually only be attributed to state actors.

They can get defaced serial numbers to resurface. They have been able to this for decades and their processes have gotten way more advanced. Depending on the guns age it could have been manufactured prior to the mandate of serial numbers, but I think this goes all the way back to the 60s

I'm ready to be accused of moralfagging, but this doesn't sit well with me. George Floyd was a felon doing felonious things. Cops were called because he was breaking the law. He died because he refused to accept that he was being arrested and struggled and was restrained. Even if he was improperly restrained, he could have deescalated by capitulating before they needed to try to restrain him.

Charlie Kirk was a man expressing his opinions, sometimes strongly worded but he never did anything violent or felonious. He was murdered for sharing words. If words can get someone killed, imagine what your post history here could mean for you.

Like follow my logic, if its just some bada-bitch like you or me that buys a rifle legally, there will be documents, footage of the purchase, all that. They would find you before the end of the day if you left the rifle there

Btw have they published what the exact make and model of the weapon in question?

They've only said that they found the rifle, and a pic of it did leak that was posted earlier in this thread, it's an FN Mauser with a sporterized poly frame.

I agree that the provenance of the rifle will be very interesting. It will either turn out that this guy bought it, inherited it, stole it from a parent, or the gun itself is already reported stolen / missing and so the serial is useless for chain of custody. The last one is what I would expect if it was some kind of professional job.

Buying an old rifle from some guy who got it after his grandfather passed away (or something) is not illegal. Suppose that happens and the rifle changes hands a dozen times until you buy it. Despite popular beliefs you are not required to register this in most states and even if you are it can be easily ignored as its not often enforced.

This makes the serial number far less useful than you think it is. I mean, unless the retard bought it from Bass Pro Shop recently or something like that.

Serial numbers have only been mandated since 1968. Only the receiver of the gun is is required to be serialized, and that receiver may have been manufactured in the 1930s.
