Pushing for the death penalty might be a mistake and taking the bait now that I think about it. Life in prison would deny him the martyrdom the left will undoubtedly try to give him as they reframe everything. Not killing him could also be a mercy for his family who are conservatives and to the cardinal who didn't keep the confession private. Not having blood on their hands will help them cope.
Regardless of what the judge calls, it's best not to cheer for either verdict but maintain a level of disgust rather than glee so that this doesn't feed the propaganda machine any more than it already has.
