The premise was fantastic. A policeman's partner is shot by the son of a mexican drug gang leader in revenge. The policeman goes on a violent crusade to find the killer of his partner, accompanied by an ex-FBI vigilante, and they would even encounter the Yakuza. You would expect something like Drive but longer, and when you watch the show, it even sets you up for it, since the main character is very similar to Ryan Gosling's character.
Now the show isn't all bad, there were some decent scenes, like a chase between an electric car and a muscle car, where the electric runs out of charge in the desert and and the muscle car obliterates it. But all the action is basically played for comedy, not the brutality that was promised.
And most of the show consists of 5-6 minute long scenes of the characters arranged like a painting and staring while droning music plays. There are multiple very long sex scenes with the mexican guy who becomes a cartel boss, where it turns out he had incestuous relations with his mother and wants his new girlfriend to perform the same BDSM torture on him, like whipping him and then sodomizing him with the whip handle. There is only
one good track in the entire soundtrack, and it's just repeated over and over, the other songs are either boring variations of that theme or too unmemorable to recall.
The writing could only be described as meandering. The main character is put in situations like sidequests in an RPG, the only parts where he actually does anything like the premise promised is at the very end, where he just gets captured and killed by the mexican. And plot twist, turns out the show isn't about a policeman getting revenge for his partner, no! It was actually about how all america is apparently dominated by Christians who re-enact scenes from the bible on their breaks and are apparently too lazy and stupid to live, so the mexican cartel is going to take over America and make everyone understand savagery again. And omniscient aliens have been making this happen, and their prophet is a therapist lady who believes in pyramid power and had a 10 minutes scene of her jerking off to VR porn that's shot and performed in as disgusting a manner as possible.
The show keeps setting you up for something cool to happen. The Yakuza appear in a scene where Hideo Kojima plays an assassin and cuts a guy's finger off, and then never appear again. The mexican cartel barely do anything interesting either, most of their roles consist of following orders with blank faces and then getting shot by the Mexican guy's girlfriend who is also the Goddess of Death and is going to save the world by shooting mexican cartel goons when she's free. But nothing happens. Nothing matters. When the show was over I wanted to punch the screen.
