Here's something I'm genuinely curious about. Why doesn't Ralph just buy Everclear or some other pure alcohol? He clearly doesn't like alcohol itself if he's gulping down Wild Turkey and then gulping down a soda or pink lemonade chaser. Why not just cut the costs, skip the bullshit. If all he's trying to do is get drunk, why waste the time and money? Just buy pure alcohol.

The late great prophet Bill Hicks (pbuh) went to AA meetings in every city he had shows. If it’s good enough for him, it’s probably too good for a Ralph.

Someone like Ralph, who HATES being alone, would benefit a lot just from having people to hang out with who aren’t his dealers. (Especially with Meigh gone.) In many cities you can sit in meetings until midnight or 24/7 if you want, because there are so many groups.

He needs something to occupy his time that isn’t getting wasted. Ralph doesn’t have friends but he loves a captive audience he can tell all about being “an internet talk show host.” Guys like him are a dime a dozen in 12 Step programs.

I've been meaning to read this book since Godwinson recommended it. Might start it this evening.
As to this AA thing, Ralph's inability to get sober has been discussed to death but I'd like to say that one of his primary issues is unwillingness to admit fault. When you've been a scumbag addict for years, you have a laundry list of sins that will probably be hard to recall in it's entirety.
When Ralph's able to do the work of enumerating and making amends for all of the evil he's spread, then he has a chance in the long term. As it is, at best Ralph has a shot at being a dry drunk ,at worst he's going into a honeymoon stage in his addiction cycle and any supposed progress will be short lived.

Get sober Ralph. You'll still be the same person, except you'll love yourself when no is looking.

It’s a genius book. It had a very interesting insight into AA meetings. DFW had a towering intellect and at first was very put off by the simplistic cliches that dominated AA, until he realized they were true. Smart people are overloaded with how nuanced and complex life is, so it was hard to accept very simple, plain spoken truths could work for people, even people like himself.

While the book is obv fiction DFW did have a drinking problem before he wrote IJ and attended AA meetings in Boston to get sober. He also struggled with depression and it was well managed for 12 years (his most prolific) with ann anti-depressant. He was doing so well for so long he decided he should stop taking the med, and did. Unfortunately the depression came back, worse than ever. He tried to get back on the meds he used to take but for whatever reason now it had no effect, and neither did other anti-depressants he tried. The best writer of his generation hung himself in his garage.

Also this gives me a chance to share my theory that The Infinite Jest predicted the internet, just let the VHS tape be a symbol for the internet or smart phones and the book basically predicted our current age to a terrifying degree.

You’re sitting there begging “please God help me to not drink this beer I’m currently opening and hoisting toward my face” and God is like “dude, we’ve been through this. I’ve taken care of the backend already; you just need to stop making this be about MY failures because definitionally, they don’t exist. If you drink the beer, you’ll suffer. If you don’t, you’ll improve. The rules of the game are already set up so this is the case, now you just do your part.”

I think you’d need to read the IJ to understand. My little synopsis in no way does it justice.

I’ve never been an alcoholic or had anything to do with AA besides reading the Big Book out of sheer curiosity (I enjoyed reading colorful life stories of 1920’s alcoholics, the rest meh.)

I tended to have a low opinion of AA and its “higher power” and cult like qualities. DFW’s meditations on it and why it did work for people was very insightful for me and helped me not be so dismissive. It’s not for everyone but that total surrender of ego, and group community, is exactly what some people need to get sober.

He was also writing from the perspective of an alcoholic who had gotten sober enough to be a night manager at a homeless shelter for other homeless drunks and the meetings that took place in this context.
