There a is member of my family who shall remain unmentioned that is a complete and total spice wimp. And by Spice wimp, I don't mean "Can't stand anything above Jalapeno". I mean that Black Pepper will send them into a coughing fit and complaints of the food being "too spicy".

I've been forced to cook two difference versions of the same food now. One seasoned appropriately, and one with pretty much just salt and garlic powder. As someone who actually like to add a bit of hot sauce to things now and then, and never had to cook without some form of pepper before, this is obnoxious.

Can this state of affairs be "fixed"? Do I even have a moral right to fix it?

Very simple. Acclimate them very gradually to spice. Like the frog in the boiling water, they'll have no idea the food is so spicy. For example, include same amount of spice, but add a neutralizer like lemon or something to dilute the spice, then gradually lower the diluter/neutralizer until the spice wimp can become a spice king!

I feel you.

My mom will literally ask every restaurant on every order "is this spicy?" even if it is a food that in no reality is going to be. She'll do it every time she's over and is going to eat something from the fridge... it's the most frustrating thing. She will eat something that isn't supposed to be spicy that I have already eaten and can confirm has not even a hint of spice and refuse to eat anymore claiming it's too spicy. I don't know how people live like this.

Is this the kind of family member where you go to jail for not feeding? If not, stop feeding him.

No.... Maybe. Source: Am a spice whimp. Ok, not really, compared to the previous posters who have already talked about people who go into convulsions with anything with more heat than unsalted butter on white bread. But I've never been a big fan of "This hot sauce can double as battery acid, and is classified as a weapon of war in 32 countries" level of heat. I can go with some mild Buffalo wings, or some Pablano peppers in a dish, but have never been a big fan of anything where the heat is overpowering everything else. While there are some things that could be an acquired taste, to me, I don't think that something that physically pains me I could ever get used to.

It's probably worth figuring out what's going on - if they can't handle black pepper then it might be an allergy or intolerance. Since within the context it sounds like they're dependent on your cooking, you will just get people in that position that enjoy being fussy and difficult.

If it's a matter of practicality, then set yourself up with ready options to temper the spice - give them more cheese, sour cream or mix in yogurt or oil. Maybe switch to white pepper. A side of fruit chutneys kept in the fridge. Try dishes that combine mild spices with the neutralizer, such as yogurt marinades, or paprika stews.

It's a Hail Mary but one thing you can try is to get them to taste the flavor of something like a chili without the heat. For example, make a red chili syrup (boil 1:1 parts sugar and water with a finely diced and deseeded chili) and pour it over vanilla ice cream, topped with black sesame or pistachio nuts.

I was a second gen spice wimp from my mom until I was in my teens. I started with basic shit like tabasco, then I moved out and started smoking and stepped my game up to the next level from there so I'm not some sort of Big Van Vader of spicy but I can go decently hard.

i mean the solution is obvious, put a little bit of pepper in their food, little by little you increase their tolerance. I mean the only reason i can tolerate a Carolina Reaper, tolerate is still generous, is i started from basic bitch peppers and grew my tolerance.

yeah this was my first thought. I can handle reasonably spicy food without much trouble but specifically jalapenos are a nightmare for me due to allergies. I can feel a basically a chemical burn all the way from my gums to my guts within minutes of eating them even if there's so few of them or they're so mild that I can't even taste them, crippling heartburn, vomiting, wheezing, just the whole nine yards. I think the combination of allergic reaction and the capsaicin really sends me into some kind of reaction overdrive

Sneak up on him while he sleeps and break a ginger root off in his ass. He'll eventually stop bitching about the spicy food.

if they're sprite is spicy water level it's too late. either way your only option is to call them gay and then coerce them into it with the best mild to hot sauces you know of

I used to love spicy food, but as I've gotten older, I still enjoy it going in, but now very spicy food causes intense gastrointestinal distress.

Actual spicy food can be unpleasant to me, but hot sauce does not trigger that response.

With the mild hot sauces, I like the flavor enhancement.
With Scotch bonnet it's about the flavor, but if I could cut back the spice a bit and increase the flavor, that would be nice.
Actual peppers I probably max out at serrano, and yeah, I don't eat it by choice because of the exit tax.

I started out with jalapeno slices in tacos. Dad liked ketchup on his eggs, but I liked tabasco.

I will say I prefer the mild green jalapeno tabasco over the red. (Which is also jalapeno, go fig) More taste, less sting.

I do find it funny that Denmark banned Samyang Buldak ramen because it was too spicy for their people.
“From fearless Vikings to ‘must protect people from spicy noodle,'” another quipped. “The North has truly fallen.”

There's spicy and spicy.

Spicy should be nice fuzzy feeling in your mouth.. It's not the star of the show, just the supporting cast.
When it takes all the space and you can only think about how fucking spicy something is while eating it then it's a problem.

Also some culture use spicy food to hide it being spoiled.
