UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I’d happily hang rudukabana but there are multiple reasons promising this is dumb;
- you cant retroactively sentence people
- how do they propose to reinstate the death penalty? I am in favour of it, what I don’t trust is successive governments not to make a racism a capital crime. And to reinstate it they will need to rip out whole swathes of the law, and get us out of multiple treaties and agreements, and deal with pressure from Europe - will they do that?
The biggest issue with the Death Penalty is that the police have been caught outright ignoring or fabricating evidence over time. There have been people who were innocent inprisoned for years to decades because the police could not do their job or were trying to frame someone.

Just recently there was an officer who was caught creating evidence with AI. With how much AI has quickly improved over time since it's infancy and how so many people are fooled by it. Is it really a good idea to have the death peanlty if these are the issues we still face without it?

We can't bring back time that was lost to those that were imprisoned by miscarrage of justice but at least they can get out, be compensated (eventually, it took a very long time for that to be a thing here) and know that atleast they will no go down as someone they are not. Death? Can't bring anybody back from that.

It’s not beyond the bounds of possibility that this is code for a jihadi and a convert. Just a thought.
The reporting is extremely circumspect, they say nothing of the ideology or connections of the people charged and just describe the operation around it in a way to let the reader infer the details.

You’re right, and I have fallen in to the trap of thinking that this is republican vs unionist when no such thing was explicitly stated. It could indeed be Muslim.
For a woman to be involved it implies wider community involvement - and yes, that could be Muslim too.

Just search Derbyshire police officer, AI, evidence and you will get plenty of results from multiple places.
Or you could provide backups to your own statements.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the detective is alleged to have used an AI chatbot to prepare documents including victim impact statements and case summaries for prosecutors. It is claimed he prompted the software to maximise the impact of statements and to produce material likely to support charging decisions.

One source said the officer had allegedly used “good-sounding words” to achieve outcomes he believed were justified.

The detective had worked on a number of rape investigations before the allegations emerged, although he was also involved in other types of criminal cases.

Derbyshire Police is investigating the officer on suspicion of offences including perverting the course of justice. No arrests have been made and no charges have been brought.

The Crown Prosecution Service said it is engaging with defence lawyers and the courts over the affected cases but has not disclosed how many convictions are under review.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council recently established a specialist unit, PoliceAI, to oversee the adoption of the technology across forces in England and Wales. Its head, Alex Murray, has asked some forces to pause the use of AI in preparing court documents while safeguards are developed.

So a cop used AI as is being encouraged by their own specialist unit to prep for rape cases.

Presumably because he wanted rapists to actually go to jail.

No, “but what if AI” this does not change my mind about wanting the death penalty for child murderers.

Death? Can't bring anybody back from that.
Ideally, and as practiced by ye olde England, the death penalty is the end of the criminal's bloodline. Killing the guy isn't the only way to accomplish that.

Capital punishment didn't have a conscious eugenic intention, but criminals are young. Few enough fathers were hanged that a boy seeing it happen is the equivalent of a supervillain origin story in old British literature (and American "old West" stories).

All this is niggling. Here's the problem: The system is made to cultivate criminals and destroy you. Adding the death penalty to it puts you in the chair, not them.

Surely it's not beyond the wit of man?
It's only as complicated as you want to make it, rudakabunga clearly 100% did it and should swing that's one end of the spectrum, where the happy middle meets? That's the matter for debate, not whether or not it should even happen in the first place. Criminal life really isn't that sacred and shouldn't be treated as such, "ooh buit wot if" that's what a functioning judiciary is meant to be for, obviously we can't bloody well trust them, but stringing up rudabungaunga is a nice thought all the same and Lowe is objectively morally correct; if Norway can do it just for Quisling so can we.

The death penalty is perfectly fine on rudaka since they were tons of eyewitnesses as well conclusive pieces of evidence that can't be denied.

I was more referring to cases like Sean Hodgson being falsely convicted because the police didn't bother to do a proper job in the Teresa De Simone murder case. When you have the actual killer walk into the police station that arrested Sean and the killer explains to police that he did the deed. The police should of not, at all just told him to leave because they don't believe him. A innocent man spent nearly 30 years behind bars for murder and all because the Police were incompetent.

And even if we aren't talking about neglience of duty. There has already been plenty of cases all over western nations where police officers or a group have been caught fabricating or ignoring evidence.

And yes I'll take the L for the AI shit, I should of been more through with that (hang all journoscum). I was suggesting however that there will be a point that corrupt officers will be using AI to actually fabricate evidence to fast-track or frame someone for their own wants. And it will be hard to prove that there is a conspircy within the police if a number of them are working together on the same thing.

Point is. I don't trust the police to do a good job all the time. The reason I'm fine with Rudaka getting killed is because there is plenty of undeniable proof and eyewitnesses with everything that happened that day.

but I can assure you, very few people in the UK actively want more guns around.
I don't have a problem with more guns around. They just have to be in the hands of the right people and abolutely not in the hands of the wrong people.
Broadmoor is not Great Ormond Street, that's for sure, and I'm not sure why Lowe is wanting Axel out of there when it's worse than the likes of Belmarsh.
The cost of keeping Rudakubana in hospital is likely to be much higher in Broadmoor than a prison.

According to the Centre for Mental Health the average secure hospital bed costs around £270,000 a year.

The average cost of keeping a prisoner in Belmarsh is £97,740 according to figures for 2023.

I don't think this should be allowed. You presume everyone accused is guilty.
At the moment the cop is supposedly using it to maximise the impact of statements. The trouble is AI won't have the ethics to know the boundary between this and falsifying evidence. It will objectively see "maximise emotional impact of statement" - it won't keep to the facts unless explicitly told to do so and even then this is debatable.

The way I read Rupe’s tweet, the “with the permission of the British people” bit, I first thought he meant they’d hold a referendum about whether to execute this one fucking guy. Referenda are expensive but 300k * 30 years, it would pay for itself.

He probably just meant “vote for us” but maybe there’s something to that.

The other factor is that if you execute these animals like the Welsh Choir Boy Rudakubana or the Manchester Bomber's brother Hashem Abedi - you can potentially make them martyrs or heroes to be copied by other nutters / followers of the Religion of Peace.

Also why show them mercy by giving them a swift ( supposedly ) painless end ?

"Axel Rudakubana, I sentence you to life in Federal "pound me in the ass" prison. Here you will not be allowed to live with your Muslim brothers, but will be cast down as a plaything for the sodomites. After a month it will feel like you've been fucked by a train. I will mail you a dress......"

Good sir, this is the British thread for British people, we’ll have no Muttposting here!

Different to what the prior poster mentioned but for the Maccabi Tel Aviv ban the police used a match AI made up as evidence.

Pick your proof on that.

The chief of West Midlands police has apologised to MPs for giving them incorrect evidence about the decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv football fans, saying it had been produced by artificial intelligence (AI).

Craig Guildford told the home affairs select committee on Monday that the inclusion of a fictitious match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and West Ham in police intelligence “arose as a result of a use of Microsoft Copilot”.

The chief constable had previously told MPs that the force did not use AI and the mistake regarding the West Ham match, which had never taken place, was made by “one individual doing one Google search”.
Something that big you can guarantee it won't be the only police force doing it.

Right which is why mentally breaking them down is one way to get the message across that the hero you look upto isn't as a faithful and righteous as he portrays himself to be. Two ways around to do this is to make their life so miserable and painful that they would beg for death and the only way to stop it is to get them to renounce their beliefs and motivations to the public to demoralize their believers.

The problem with that though is that they will be sure as hell to make sure that you can't do that with suicide bombers.
I'm pro-death penalty, but only if we had an actually decent government and decent governing body. So I'm effectively anti-death penalty.
You should be pro-death penalty to every journalist and politician at the very least.
