UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

That's okay, I will take into account that you suffer from an extremely debilitating condition called "Welsh", I won't hold that against you.
Pretty much everywhere everyone is supposed to be able to do anything as need be, it's always been like that de jure, de facto is another matter because it really depends on the place. Even employers like the slave-driving discounters have designated people for designated roles, even though they've all got the same job title they all do different "jobs".
The fuck-up has been a technical one; the cleaning ladies won because of retarded nomenclature on the part of the councils (instead of just having different jobs theory were all "band x" which has the implication of similarity even though it really really doesn't in practice) and now because judges are retarded we're all gonna suffer over it, KILL ALL THE LAWYERS.
Leave those sweet cleaning ladies aloneeee.

This turns you on? A jeet lady eating veggies.

Fireworks ban incoming.

Take part in the consultation now: https://www.gov.uk/government/consu...n-the-uk/fireworks-and-pyrotechnics-in-the-uk

To be clear, the suggestion is to ban the sale of fireworks that are over a certain noise level, but if you think that pushing for a fireworks ban of any sort is a good idea when other countries in the EU just banned them outright recently? You're fucking retarded.

Ban ban ban ban ban. Fuck this country.

"Niggers beat up my friend but I still love niggers. Which is good!"
Lol, lmao even. Once a cuck, always a cuck ayy Scotland.
By this logic I should hate every single white person because I've had fights with them. If your a bad person I will treat you as such regardless of skin colour, sexuality or religion. Its as simple as that. What does Scotland have to do with this anyway?

Nothing like a sore winner.
Can't lie, if they manage to get themselves banned from the next match over this I'll be laughing hard.
There better be a Hell of a good reason they're holding these people under terrorism laws.
My personal suspicion is they've been monitoring conversations between the people involved and one of them made a joke about fitting the drone with a bomb. It's possible they discussed it too thoroughly to the degree the police felt they could make a move and have fair justification.
Following on from this, as the Next case spooked private sector employers into realising it's not just councils...
I think it was mentioned upthread but Labour are going to start factoring in race and disability in equal pay claims. So all those areas that hired the equivalent of Diane Abbot and parked her somewhere she couldn't cause trouble are going to be sued for not paying her the same as the person who does their job and hers.

Keir receiving acknowledgement from a country he has done more for while he was in office.

Sir Keir Starmer has become the first serving UK prime minister to be awarded France's top honour, the Legion d'honneur.

He received the award at the end of a meeting of the so-called Coalition of the Willing - the group of countries Sir Keir and French President Emmanuel Macron helped set up to help Ukraine in the wake of Russia's full-scale invasion of 2022.

In his tribute, Macron praised Sir Keir's "decency" and expressed his gratitude for the "commitments for obviously your country, but the security of Europe, Ukraine, the bilateral relationship".

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky was among those to pay tribute to the outgoing prime minister who is due to leave his post next week.

Presenting Sir Keir with the award, Macron said: "I wanted to reiterate my gratitude and the gratitude of the French people, obviously for your years as prime minister.

"I have to say, all the human qualities that we learn to appreciate, all those remain very important to all of us. We found with you a very reliable and friendly partner."

In addition to Zelensky, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also thanked Sir Keir at the event in the French presidential palace.

Every year, about 2,000 French people and 200 foreign nationals are awarded the Order of the Legion of Honour in recognition of "outstanding merits".

Sir Winston Churchill is among those honoured - having received the highest rank of the order known as Grand Croix (Grand Cross), which is given to those who have continued to render "outstanding merit" over a period of time.

However, the award has been controversial since being established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802.

Apart from the likes of Nelson Mandela and former US President Dwight Eisenhower, and indeed, Zelensky himself, the honour has also gone to Russia's President Vladimir Putin and Libya's Muammar Gaddafi - and earlier to Benito Mussolini of wartime Italy and Spanish dictator Francisco Franco.

So far, only one foreign leader has been stripped of the honour, former Panamanian President Manuel Noriega.

Under Macron, Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has also seen the decoration withdrawn after a series of accusations of sexual harassment and rape.

And to the surprise of no-one the shops linked to that people smuggler have been reopened by an unidentified person or persons already. I'm certain it's not him or anyone like him this time.

Mini-marts in Leicestershire linked to a convicted people smuggler have had new businesses registered to their addresses after they were shut down by council officers.

A BBC investigation traced Twana Jamal, once described as "the godfather" of the French migrant camps, to Blaby where reporters witnessed him working illegally in two shops in the village.

The new companies were registered to the addresses just days after Blaby District Council applied for a closure order for the stores in Lutterworth Road.

Financial experts have told the BBC registering multiple companies at single addresses can be a red flag.

Blaby District Council secured a temporary emergency closure order for the premises, Candy Corner and Candy Corner 1, using anti-social behaviour laws on 2 July.

Following the order, new firms were registered to the properties on Saturday and Sunday under a new director, who is an Iraqi national.

On Tuesday, workers arrived at one of the shops, next to the office of South Leicestershire MP Alberto Costa, and changed the sign above the door to M&M Express Ltd.

A spokesperson for the authority told the BBC the temporary closure order would prevent the shops reopening until at least 20 July, despite the apparent transfer of interests.

A council spokesperson said: "We are aware that two new companies were registered over the weekend at 8 Forge Corner and 8A Lutterworth Road - namely MM Blaby Ltd and MM1 Blaby Ltd.

"The closure notice issued by Blaby District Council on the basis of preventing disorder and protecting our communities applies to the premises itself.

"This was extended by the court for a further 14 days and remains in place until the next court hearing on 20 July.

"Activity at the premises since the closure notice has been limited to the change of signage at one of the premises - 8A Lutterworth Road."

The spokesperson added: "The shops cannot reopen due to the closure notice remaining in place."

On Thursday, Leicestershire Police applied to the district council for a review of the premises licence of the shop at 8A Lutterworth Road.

Jamal is believed to have been seeking asylum in the UK. He told the BBC he had applied and was "still waiting".

It is not known what name he used on any application.

UK law says anyone who has spent 12 months or more in prison overseas should be refused asylum.

Jamal was given a five-year jail sentence in France in 2016, where authorities described him as one of the most successful people smugglers ever caught - earning up to £100,000 a week from moving illegal immigrants across the Channel.

At that time, the mode of travel preferred by cross-channel smugglers was freight lorries rather than small boats.

After Jamal told the BBC investigation team he was now based in Leicester, reporters looked at companies in the area that might be linked to him and found the two mini-marts in Blaby.

Reporters witnessed him working, driving a car without a licence and apparently using a false name.

When the team confronted Jamal, he said he had never had any involvement in people smuggling, had not been jailed in France and claimed to have been in the UK since 2009.

But when shown a picture of him in a French courtroom in 2016, he did not deny it was him.

Jamal denied he was working at the mini-mart despite having been seen by reporters behind the till, as well as moving stock in and out of the store.

There is no apparent link between Jamal and the two new companies that have been registered.

The BBC has contacted the director of the new firms for comment.

High Street crime investigator Graham Barrow, of the Dark Money Files blog, told the BBC "these shops often start off and close down quite rapidly".

He added: "They tend to be connected in some ways with common directors, common owners, and common addresses.

"It's not unusual to see three, four, or five companies being registered to the same shop address over several years, often with very similar names, none of which ever survive to actually file the accounts with HMRC.

"So we recognise those as red flags of potentially suspicious behaviour.

"That makes it incredibly difficult for local authorities to go to magistrates and try and paint that picture of concern about a particular premises.

"You can go on the Companies House website, pay £100 and, if you know the system, you can register a company in half an hour."

Jamal in a French courtroom in 2016, where he received a five-year sentence
One of the two stores that have been closed is next door to the constituency office of Conservative South Leicestershire MP Alberto Costa.

Costa told the BBC it was "distasteful" that Jamal had been working illegally in the village.

He said: "The state has failed here. He [Jamal] should not be able to apply for asylum here.

"He has taken advantage of the freedom of our society."

Costa said he was pressing the home secretary for information about Jamal's status.

Police and crime commissioner Rupert Matthews told the BBC that Leicestershire Police was awaiting information from the immigration service about Jamal.

He said: "We need to find out if he has committed a crime in Leicestershire and, if he has, we will take the action we need to."

A Home Office spokesperson said: "Officers continue to work round the clock and with other law enforcement partners to track down Twana Jamal.

"Anyone with information about his whereabouts should report this to the police."
Remember that our current crop of traitors have provided financial incentive for these sort of businesses to bring over "skilled workers"

What does Scotland have to do with this anyway?
I gotta drive up there and I'm pre-seething at all the natural beauty imma see. I gotta go to a place in the middle of bum fuck nowhere, right up at the top to adjust equipment. It's gonna piss me off something chronic driving back down and just heading from nature into Mordor.

I entirely missed this piece of news, that's usually the death knell of any company.
Yeah lol. I was reading that sentence and all I could think of was "how much did they already loot?"

Especially with this:
Asda has wobbled from one crisis to another in recent years, with its debt interest bill soaring eight-fold from £90m after the takeover
Vulture capitalism strikes again! Wanna bet the new owners just saddled Asda with the debt they used to purchase it in the first place?

Those tiny tiny midges. Which sound nothing like the thing you hate.

I'm not a slag or a cheating arsehole - I've got ROCD !

Sophia, 24, has been in a loving relationship for more than a year, but she still finds herself questioning everything about it - from how compatible she and her boyfriend are to whether she loves him at all, and what action she might take as a result.

"I couldn't leave the house because I was so worried I would cheat on my boyfriend," says Sophia, a content creator and waitress from Leeds.

"At my worst, I couldn't go to work. I'd be lying in bed all day, asking [Chat] GPT hundreds of questions to try and get reassurance."

Sophia is describing living with relationship OCD (ROCD), a form of obsessive compulsive disorder which experts say goes far beyond the normal relationship doubts that we can all experience.

Instead, ROCD involves persistent intrusive doubts that cause significant distress and lead to compulsive behaviours, such as repeatedly testing your partner to try to find reassurance.

Is content creator a polite euphemism for Only Fans whore ?

Oh fuck offfffffff this is literally the only reason they made this change.
Well after that imam got a talking to for marrying children the laws needed to be changed so it could be done.

Soon they won't have to send their teen daughters back to the home countries to marry men twenty years older than them, it can be done in the UK instead.

Speaking of Keir's peer's have been announced and to no-one's surprise he's gone all in on appointments to such a heinous degree that I'm going to use the Flail article that first heralded it before posting the confirmed details.

Keir Starmer could add almost 20 new Labour peers to the House of Lords when he quits No10 later this month, despite criticising past Prime Ministers for handing out peerages when the leave power.

Sir Keir is reported to be planning to put forward 19 party names for a resignation honours list, meaning he will have added 135 peers to the upper chamber in less than two years.

It will raise the possibility that controversial aides like Morgan McSweeney could be handed a place at the heart of Westminster lawmaking.

The list will also prove controversial because of the number of seats handed to other parties, with the Lib Dems getting more than the Tories and Reform getting none.

In 2023, Sir Keir criticised Rishi Sunak for allowing Boris Johnson to have a resignation honours list after the Partygate scandal and said he would not do the same.

'Tony Blair didn't have a resignation list. It's very hard to justify,' he told the BBC.

'There are other avenues for that and I think it's easier to be clean about this and simply say, no, I wouldn't do it.'

But after Sir Keir announced he was quitting last month, No10 refused to discuss whether there would be a resignation honours list.
Asked why Keir Starmer - who previously vowed to abolish the House of Lords - was creating 19 new peers, the PM's official spokesman refused to comment on 'speculation' first reported by the Times.

But Downing Street pointed to Sir Keir's removal of hereditary peers from the Lords as 'one of the biggest reforms to Parliament in a generation' and said the Government was also 'exploring further reform' of the upper House.

Labour's manifesto vowed to replace the Lords with 'an alternative second chamber that is more representative of the regions and nations'.

Pressed on whether Sir Keir still believed the Lords should be scrapped, his spokesman added: 'It's normal practice for prime ministers to recommend individuals for peerages.'

Asked whether Sir Keir would bring forward a resignation honours list when he formally quits as PM - despite having once said he wouldn't do so - his spokesman pointed to the premier's words on Wednesday at the NATO summit, in which he said he would 'look at that in the usual course of things'.

A Tory source accused Labour of gerrymandering, adding: “It is yet another example of Labour’s disregard for constitutional convention for their own political ends.'

But Labour hit back saying that the allocation of peerages reflected the fact that when the last 92 hereditary peers were removed from the Lords earlier this year, some 15 of them became Tory life peers, more than for other parties.
And now the list. Bear in mind the Lib Dem ones are functionally Labour ones as well.

Sir Sadiq Khan is to be made a peer along with 25 other new members of the House of Lords as Sir Keir Starmer prepares to leave office.
The Labour London Mayor will take his seat on the red benches with former cabinet secretary Sir Chris Wormald and Sir Brian Leveson, a retired senior judge.
They appeared on a list of names issued by Downing Street to which No 10 said the King has been “graciously pleased to signify his intention of conferring peerages”.
A spokesman for the Mayor said: “Sadiq is honoured to be given a peerage.
“London gave Sadiq the opportunities to go from a council estate to being Mayor of London, and his focus will continue to be ensuring that all Londoners get the same shot at reaching their full potential that London gave him and his family.”

I can't believe just how far the whole Binface vs. Farage farce is going. You have actual, real fucking powerful people backing Binface like Starmer and Campbell. Is this really their best shot at stopping Farage? They couldn't find a SINGLE person in Clacton who was willing to be a real candidate against Farage?

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if they just declared the election invalid if it looks like Farage might win.

Vulture capitalism strikes again! Wanna bet the new owners just saddled Asda with the debt they used to purchase it in the first place?
9/10 that's exactly what they do, transfer the purchase debt to the company they just bought and then strip out as much value as they can. Absolutely scummy behavior but it explains why ASDA has been going downhill recently.

They don't think he'll win, it's simply empty virtue signalling as they pretend Binface is incredibly hilarious and the mockery of Reform is le height of satire.

Noticeably whoever is performing Binny runs in elections where right wing parties are due to win.

I'd personally like to pitch my own novelty political candidate character, battered Muslim woman. It can be played by anyone willing to wear a niqab and black both their eyes and will run on a platform of trying to actually protect women no matter the skin colour or religion of the men assaulting them. I am fairly certain said character would be murdered within 3 days of being used anywhere in London.

Voting for the Norfolk Police and Crime Commissioner election ends in less than an hour. The commissioner would serve until 2028, when the position would be abolished when Norfolk and Suffolk gets merged into a single authority.

Amerimutt here. What are the chances of the Restore Britain candidate Mark Buckton winning? Great Yarmouth is located in Norfolk where Restore Britain has captured all ten seats within the county that they contested. I would expect a lot of support for Lowe and Restore Britain in Norfolk. It does seem Reform's support in Norfolk back during the local elections was seen as a lesser evil and that many prefer Restore.

Does a police commissioner have that kind of power to actually fully reform the police force within Norfolk if Restore Britain were to win given the already bankrupt reputation held by the British police, or it's just symbolic and nothing happens?

We need to convince as many people as possible to make discount Binface costumes like in V for Vendetta and march through the streets shouting "TOTAL MUZZIE DEATH, I HATE NIGGERS" until the real one is forced to show his gormless mug crying about impersonators, and the whole "joke" can be over with.

She's just a young woman that got a minor mental health issue. Jesus Christ, people are harsh.
In the article they talked about her previous form of OCD, where she washed her hands like 30+ times a day.
My mother does this, and she is in her 60s. It is annoying because she will freak out about cooking meat and a small amount of mud on the pavement when you go anywhere.
