A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Cheers! It really cheers me up to see those replies, since it's all well and good me coming on here to vent my spleen but it's not going to change anything. What we need is a general "swell" from the whole population, and more and more I think we're getting there. Certainly a lot of people replying to Burnham on twitter must know that they're risking a visit from plod by telling him to "shut up and stop sucking Muslim cock" but they just don't care any more.

This kind of stuff, the protests in Norn Iron, Glasgow and Lincoln. People are realising that you can get what you want when you show up in numbers, and there's far more of us than the police (loved seeing people just walk straight past them in that Lincoln video).

Psychopathy and intelligence are not inherently correlated. Extensive research debunks the "Hannibal Lecter myth"—the media portrayal that psychopaths are universally brilliant masterminds. While psychopathic individuals can be highly manipulative or cunning, their general intelligence spans the exact same broad spectrum as the rest of the general population.
So neither positive nor negative correlation.
The relationship between the two is highly nuanced and depends heavily on the specific traits being measured, which explains where some of the confusion stems from.

The high IQ psychopath trope is basically a case of survivorship bias. The majority of psychopaths most people will encounter in their lives will be the high functioning, high IQ variety, but that's only because most of the low IQ ones usually end up dead, in prison, or homeless before they hit 30, on account of them being overwhelmingly violent retards with low impulse control and a love for both speeding and illicit substances.

Absolute gigaton truth nukes dropped here, anyone who is familiar with people who show psychopathic traits knows about this. The primary traits of psychopathy are low empathy, propensity towards violence, high emotional volatility (but low emotional understanding), and impulsive behavior. They can be intelligent, they can be stupid, but many psychopaths are in fact just scheming, pathological liars who improvise everything, mostly relying on mooching, emotionally manipulating, and annoying people into doing everything for them, while they fuck up everything they actually do for themselves, and fuck over anyone who they come in close contact with.

They run around in circles their entire life and by and large don't realize they're doing anything wrong. Highly likely to be in abusive relationships with family members, friends, and lovers whether physically or emotionally, they range from being mostly ineffectual violent, schemy, fuck-ups who should be made wards of the state, to genuinely dangerous charming manipulator killers, to a sort of emotionally and morally vacant type of person who can only function in society if they hold themselves to a given set of rules that they've agreed to abide by.

The other thing is the old "No True Scotsman" debate of psychopathy (and all mental disorders as a whole), which essentially boils down to asking what is a true psychopath? What creates a psychopath? Which in turn boils down to nature versus nurture, are people born psychopathic by nature, or is it their environment that makes them who they are? I think the answer is a combination of both, but mostly chalked up to the environment one was born into.

The reason why that question matters so much is because it determines how we treat such people. If it's intrinsic to who they are, it can't be changed, and we can do nothing about it but watch over them, and keep them and other people safe from their behavior. If it is determined by their environment, then there is conceivably some way through some manner of therapy of reforming them, it's just a matter of figuring out what. Alternatively, we can learn what environmental factors create psychopaths, so that if there is no way of reforming them, we can at least make an effort to prevent new ones from being created.

Either way, they're out there in the world, doing things (mostly illicit substances, gambling and high risk behavior), so be aware of them, be they smart ones or dumb ones, socialized or au naturel.

Amnesty International has officially distanced itself from Amnesty UK. This comes after Amnesty UK published a list of 'anti rights' organisations that included a rape shelter, multiple Catholic groups that had nothing to do with any gay rights or 'anti'-gay rights groups, and Amnesty UK expressing support for the UK social media ban (X). The list has also been criticised for not including any Islamic groups such as 5 Pillars, who are explicitly anti gay.

Amnesty International UK has said it regrets a report which labelled JK Rowling’s sexual assault support centre for women ‘anti-rights’.
It comes as The Herald revealed the global secretariat distanced itself from the report on the “growing threat” of the anti-rights movement in the country.
The report has been removed temporarily while an internal review is conducted following significant public scrutiny. But it labelled Beira’s Place – the women-only sexual abuse support centre founded by JK Rowling in 2022 – as “anti-rights”.
Amnesty International UK has now expressed "regret" that the report was uploaded without the proper checks.
The Harry Potter author responded on social media, to accuse the UK charity of believing women and girls “don’t deserve rights”, while Beira’s Place said the characterisation was “deeply offensive”.
Amnesty International’s Secretariat – the central hub of the global organisation – has stressed the UK organisation is just one of its 72 national entities.
A spokeswoman for the International Secretariat said it was not involved in the development of the anti-rights briefing and supported the decision for the report to be withdrawn.
A statement provided to The Herald said: “This briefing was developed and published by Amnesty International UK (AI UK), one of 72 national entities in the Amnesty International movement.
“AI UK has since removed the briefing from its website and has initiated an internal review process.
“Amnesty's International Secretariat was not involved in the development of this briefing and is awaiting the results of AI UK's review. We support the decision to withdraw the report from AI UK's website.

“Amnesty International conducts independent research and campaigns on human rights issues worldwide, and works alongside victims and communities on the frontlines of the struggle for dignity and justice. This work includes a long‑standing and explicit commitment to gender justice, including the rights of women, LGBTQI and trans people.”
An Amnesty UK spokeswoman has since told The Herald: "We regret that this briefing was uploaded to our website without going through the established internal review processes that are in place to ensure consistency, accuracy and alignment with Amnesty International UK's positions. Its use of language does not reflect the position of Amnesty International UK which is why it was promptly removed.
We remain committed to defending human rights, including both the rights of women and the rights of trans people."
Rowling founded Beira’s Place in response to backlash Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre received when former chief executive Mridul Wadhwa said sexual abuse survivors had to “reframe” their trauma if they disagreed with being treated by a transgender woman.
Lesley Johnston, chief executive of the organisation, has said: “We are proud of our work and we know how much our service means to the women who have used it.
“It is inexplicable that Beira’s Place has been listed in a report published last week by Amnesty International.
“This is deeply offensive to Beira’s Place staff who work day in, day out to support survivors, and to the women who need and use our service.
“We will continue to focus on the needs of the women who come to us and, through the integrated work we do with partners such as Edinburgh’s Equally Safe Committee, we remain committed to a vision where women and girls can live in a world free of sexual violence.”
Amnesty removed the report over the weekend and stated: “We have temporarily removed this briefing while it undergoes an internal review.”
“Key factors contributing to this decline include the failure to reform the legal gender recognition framework, the absence of a ban on conversion practices, the treatment of LGBT+ asylum seekers, and the implications of the Supreme Court judgment in For Women Scotland Ltd v The Scottish Minister,” the report stated.

The Supreme Court case referenced by Amnesty concluded in April 2025, where the UK's apex court ruled that single-sex spaces are defined by biological sex.
The UK and Scottish Governments have faced criticism at the slow pace of implementing the policy.
In a published list of 117 UK organisations, Amnesty International mentions Beira’s Place under “gender critical” in the anti-rights category.
Amnesty International also condemns For Women Scotland – the group of women who took the Scottish Government to court over policies which allowed transgender women, born male, to take up female-only spaces on public boards.
The organisation’s three co-founders – Trina Budge, Marion Calder and Susan Smith – have written to Amnesty to warn the report contributes to “reputational harm” against For Women Scotland.
The letter states: “We note that your primary charitable object is to promote human rights. Women also have human rights. We recently won a case in Scotland to protect the human rights of incarcerated women in Scotland. The old Amnesty would have taken that case rather than attack the women who brought it.
“We now ask that you apologise to FWS for the malicious characterisation of our organisation in your report.”
The group warns “further measures” could be necessary.

An Oxfordshire village has voted to hold a referendum on becoming an independent state in protest against plans for a nearby asylum seeker camp.

Residents of Piddington, near Bicester, held a meeting at the Village Hall on July 4 where 175 voted yes to the independence vote, and only seven saying no.

Planning permission currently being sought at Ministry of Defence sites in Bicester, as well as Barnham in Suffolk, and Linton-on-Ouse in North Yorkshire, to accommodate 3,750 asylum seekers.

The Oxfordshire site would be turned into accommodation for at least 1,250 single adult male asylum seekers aged 18 to 65.

Now, Parish council chair Tim McNally has welcomed the village's decision and said he plans to take the proposals all the way to President Donald Trump.

He told The Express: "We had an incredible result with almost two-thirds of the village voting, the rest were children and an acceptance of 96 per cent. It was truly astonishing.

"Self-determination is what people want whilst they are being ignored and driven into a corner. This is a natural human instinct and reaction.

"The Principality of Piddington, the village that roared, will put together their council and representatives to empower themselves.

"I have been given the mandate from the village to bring together the best minds and attitude to seek the best solution."


Calum Miller, the Liberal Democrat MP for Bicester and Woodstock and the party's foreign affairs spokesman, has reacted with fury to the proposals.

He said: "This isolated site is wrong for those seeking asylum and wrong for the villages around it.

"Ministers must pause the plan, publish a full impact assessment and come to Bicester to explain themselves directly to local people.

Mr Miller said: "To my constituents, this feels like a decision taken in secret in Whitehall and imposed on Bicester, with local people treated as an afterthought, warning the Oxfordshire site was "over two miles from the nearest shop" with "no pavement next to the B-road by the site


He continued: "It is simply not a suitable place to locate 1,250 men seeking asylum."

Mr Norris replied: "There’ll be information we put into the public domain, it won’t change on a daily basis, and that is a source of frustration, I get that, but we will give the best that we can.

"We will do the impact assessments that we need to do along the way.

"I appreciate that the burden of proof is on us to demonstrate that we can do these schemes well and do them safely. I believe that we can do."

Fewer than 170 hotels are housing asylum seekers, Mr Norris also said, "a reduction of more than half compared to the peak of around 400 under the previous government".
