UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Labour says it will not stand a candidate in Clacton by-electionpublished at 18:26

18:26Breaking

A Labour Party spokesperson says: “Nigel Farage is engulfed in a sleaze scandal and he’s desperately trying to change the subject.

"It’s pathetic, and the Labour Party is not going to indulge it. Labour's ruling body, the National Executive Committee, has decided not to stand a candidate in this circus.

"Instead, Labour will remain focused on delivering for working people and holding Reform to account.

"Farage should let the parliamentary investigation into his finances run its course and face the consequences."

Maybe this is how Count Binface finally becomes a MP
Conservative and Labour never stood a chance. Not standing costs them nothing and it makes Farage look foolish. If none of the major parties stand there is a potential for novelty candidates to do well.

Voter turnout in Clacton in 2024 was 58.7% (Reform garnered 18.3% of the vote). Farage can save face if he can convince a larger percentage to come out and stand behind him, both as vote of confidence in his leadership and as a middle finger to the government.

Does that mean there's pretty much no chance of "millions must go" ever becoming reality?
UKIP never stood a chance, yet Brexit occured. Fringe parties can shift the major parties if they think it'll get them votes.
But Restore actually does have a chance, the problem is their potential voters go to Reform "because voting Restore is a wasted vote" . ReformUK have a single point of failure: Nigel Farage, whose departure would destroy the party.

Can someone please explain to me in "I am very sleepy deprived lately" friendly terms, why no parties aside from Reform are running in Clacton, please?
Farage is doing this as a publicity stunt to try and distract from the various donation scandals he's involved in. By not standing they deprive him of the opportunity to turn the by election into a media circus and distract people.

Am I understanding this correctly: by announcing the by election, the parliamentary investigation into the dodgy donations gets paused (as he's not fully an MP during the election process). But then if he wins, the investigation resumes (as he would have remained an MP), and part of that process is that if he's found in the wrong, a by election will be called anyway? So we might see 2 by elections in quick succession?

Assuming he wants to continue being an MP and lead Reform, is he hoping that the first election will boost his "outside of the establishment" narrative, which would then carry him through the second by election?

If there's no other major parties running, it would be interesting to see what the turnout is like. Surely he wants a big turnout so that he can frame it as a vote of local confidence in him. But if there's nobody serious running against him, lots of people will just sit out the election as there's no chance of him losing to count binface or the greens. So then his opponents can frame the lower turnout for him as actually being a sign that he's losing support in his local constituency?

A couple of reasons, I think. Partly because farage is just showboating, so just ignoring him is fun: But also because he's trying to dodge all the questions about his finances (I'm vague on the rules but I think if he's no longer MP the investigation stops), so leaving him as MP means he keeps getting prodded. Finally it means, even if he gets 100% of a decent turnout, he can't claim any sort of mandate from the people: the most he'll manage is "The people have spoken! They prefer me to Count Binface!" which is just sad.
On the off-chance he loses to Binface he dodges the investigation and we all get to piss ourselves laughing.

We now live in a UK where angry dykes and Reddit moderators are protecting dirty immigrant criminals. I reckon the guy on the left could be a moderator for r/LabourUK
Shit on the phenotypicals and midgetess rozzers all you want. The entire country is terrified of them. You don't need to be tough and imposing when the people you mean to enact your will upon refuse to defy you.

I doubt anyone is beating France, so the final will be France v whoever.

Unless Trump makes another phonecall to FIFA headquarters again, à la mysterious suspension suspension. I hope Belgium batter the US then sue the fucking pants off them if the suspension of the red-carded yank is, well, suspended.

We’re all Belgian to(morrow)night, aren’t we?

Don't know why everyone's gotten so up in arms about us doing a corrupt thing with FIFA. Just footie culture, innit mate?
