UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I just want to add, because no one has mentioned it earlier, but I ended up accidently watching Question Time on Friday and despite Zia Yusuf being completely repugnant to look at (and going on about how the Bri'ish people don't want migrants, and so by his own logic: Go home) he revealed that the party rejected him from the Makerfield bi-election.

Man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after car hits shoppers

Oh look......That thing that never happens, has happened again. But definitely NOT terror related. The BBC did at least manage to admit he was "Somali born" through gritted teeth.
Question is, was he a British Somalian ? British Somalian.....Jesus wept. I would say pick a fucking team, but in reality one prohibits the other. You can't be both.

-----------------------------------------------------

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a car hit with several people on a busy shopping street in West London.

Five people were injured, with three taken to hospital, after the incident on Ealing Broadway at around 14:30 BST on Saturday.

None of the injuries were believed to be life threatening.

The Metropolitan Police said a 34-year-old Somali-born driver fled the scene but was stopped in nearby Grange Park a short time later, where he was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and attempted murder.

While counter-terrorism police were involved in the initial investigation, it is not being treated as terror-related.

The Met said it was "keeping an open mind as to any potential motive".

Footage from the scene shared on social media showed paramedics treating people on the road as dozens of shoppers looked on.

London Ambulance Service said several crews and an air ambulance were involved in the response.

Britons have been ordered to remove air conditioning from their homes - despite the country baking in up to 40C heat this week - under a fresh Net Zero crackdown.

Planning officials at councils have told residents to take down their cooling units over concerns about carbon dioxide emissions.

They say AC, despite the heat, should serve only as a "last resort".

The crackdown comes from building regulations which demand "active cooling" is used only after all "passive cooling" methods, like opening windows or running fans, have been exhausted.

The Tories have accused the Government of leaving Britain "in the dark ages" through Net Zero policies which prevent citizens from accessing "modern conveniences that are completely normal in other countries".
Standard guidance says planning consent is not needed for air conditioning in most circumstances.

But permission becomes mandatory in specific scenarios, including properties in conservation areas - with separate regulations applying to flats, leasehold properties, and shared buildings.
Raped and cucked nation, apparently the vast majority of the EU is doing this too. Have fun, Euroniggers!

I think when we are feeling vulnerable and needing help it’s important to be able to communicate effectively and feel at ease with people.
I saw a poster from some mental health charity today, the message was along the lines of “Depressed? Things getting to be too much? Don’t bottle it up, talk to someone”.

I thought of your post. In a different time and place, if one went to the doctor and admitted that you felt alienated and a stranger in your own town, like you didn’t fit in, you can’t shake the feeling that people are talking about you, you are anxious in public settings.
You might be given therapy, a kind and understanding professional to talk to, maybe some medication, and reassurance that there is no need to have those kind of thoughts.

How things are IRL? You better bottle it up bish, or the boys in blue are coming for you.

(I’m glad you had a nice dentist visit, for real)

News time!

I will freely admit I'm posting this article because of the picture, given the recent news about the class acts doing the same job threating to smash people's teeth in the BBC using this photo is clearly a deliberate choice.
A new team of public space officers has been deployed in Leicester city centre to try to tackle anti-social behaviour.

The six new officers have been recruited by Leicester City Council to reinforce its existing team of street wardens in an effort to make the city centre feel safer.

They have the power to issue £100 penalty notices for offences such as dangerous riding of e-bikes and scooters, street drinking and aggressive begging, which became offences under a public spaces protection order (PSPO) established in 2025.

The officers, equipped with stab vests and body-worn CCTV cameras, are patrolling the city centre 12 hours a day, six days a week, the council said.

Leicester's mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said the blue-uniformed officers would be a visible deterrent against nuisance behaviour.

"There's a general consensus that cities don't feel as safe as they used to," Soulsby said.

"That's something I'm determined to address in Leicester."

Scott White, one of the new officers, told the BBC "The single biggest issue is the street lifestyle.

"It's trying to get groups of people to engage and to trust us.

"A lot of people see the uniform and they think we're the police.

"We've been called spies [but] we're not here to punish everyone and we're not here to enforce every time.

"We are actually here to help people."

Soulsby said he was proud only a "tiny" number of fines had been issued so far.

"The order is particularly aimed at persuading people, not fining them, or seeking to take them to court or anything of that sort.

"It's to try to get them to act in a way that makes a life for everybody else in the city centre reasonable and bearable."

City centre police inspector Ryan Ludlam said: "We welcome the coordinated approach of this new team, which will play a valuable role in deterring anti-social behaviour in the city centre and further aiding crime reduction in the area."

Currently the PSPO rules apply to the city centre, but the council is carrying out a public consultation on proposals to expand them to surrounding neighbourhoods.

It is expected to make a final decision on the move later in the summer.

I almost give the BBC credit for this headline but they need to a do few million to balance out their behaviour thus far.

Rapist taxi driver's DBS check not assessed by council

There is "no evidence" a council checked a criminal's past before it issued him with a taxi driver licence and later appointed him to a ceremonial role, its leader has said.

Diwan Khan, who was jailed for the rape of a 15-year-old girl in April, held a licence issued by Bracknell Forest Council between January 2021 and January 2024.

His mother Naheed Ejaz, the council's mayor between May 2023 and May 2024, was jailed alongside Khan for perverting the course of justice. Ejaz chose Khan to be her consort and they attended events on the council's behalf.

By then Khan had a considerable criminal past, including being jailed for two years for possessing cocaine with intent to supply in 2013.

Council leader Helen Purnell said she was "disappointed and saddened" the authority did not assess Khan's DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, external before his taxi licence was issued.

"If it had been checked then it is likely he would not have been given a licence," Purnell added.

She said there was "no official requirement for councillors or consorts" to be DBS checked when Khan became the mayor's consort.

But a change to do so was introduced in October 2024 "and should help provide a safeguard for all serving and future councillors and consorts", she added.

Purnell said the council has signed up to a safety charter for women and girls, "which pledges to make public spaces safer by encouraging organisations and businesses to actively prevent harm and respond effectively to violence and abuse".

Khan, who was jailed for 12 years, plied his victim with ecstasy and vodka before filming himself raping her on his mobile phone as she lay unconscious in his car in north-east Hampshire in 2024.

Prosecutors said Ejaz and Khan spoke in Urdu when police officers turned up at their Bracknell home in September 2024 so they could secretly discuss what to do with his phone.

Judge Rufus Taylor told Winchester Crown Court that Ejaz did not know at the time what the phone contained.

But he said that by taking it there was a "real risk" Khan "might have avoided prosecution of the rape of an unconscious child".

Ejaz was jailed for three years.

I feel for the British HVAC technicians. It's a phenomenal career path and the government is doing everything in their power to destroy it. You're gonna have nobody left but the jeets, and they'll steal your refrigerant and replace it with propane. According to Grok, some of the people I know in HVAC in the US make about the same as specialized surgeons, senior asset managers, and FTSE 100 CEOs in the UK.

What's crazy to me is that the Labour council not only considered rolling this out across the entire county (a predominately rural area with several upper-middle class towns) but also Rutland, a 40,000-strong, elderly, 93% white Tory stronghold with the second-lowest crime rate in England
I added the underlined word. Does it make more sense now?

It rarely gets warm enough for AC in the UK. It is like hot for, like, 2-3 weeks; everyone bitches far too much about it, and then it is normal temps again.
I didn't have AC when I lived on the Costa del Sol either.

My LandRover doesn't have AC either; it has 2 vents at the front. It's actually better than AC in some ways. I prefer it to the AC on my old vehicle.
