A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Reframing the asylum seekers/boatpeople as 'illegal migrants' could be part of a push to make legal immigration more visible (right word?) as the general public doesn't have the bloodlust against legals, yet. Natives are loosing out only because universities are practically printing money by charging a premium to foreign students. Even if native intake remained the same, there's an incentive for universities to just bring in more foreigners anyway, which is presumably why Manchester city centre is now drowning in student accommodation blocks. The only way to fix it is to either cap charges (the worst idea), ban foreigners entirely, or compromise on a cap on foreign placements with no cap on what foreigners can be charged.

The Green Party is considering giving ‘all workers who menstruate’ an additional 36 days’ paid leave a year, The Spectator can reveal. Leaked documents show that a motion has been submitted for the party’s Autumn Conference which would force businesses to allow staff to take three days off every month during menstruation. Employees would not have to present a doctor’s note, and the time off would not be recorded as sickness absence or deducted from annual leave.

The motion, which refers specifically to ‘workers who menstruate’ rather than ‘women’, also states that time off could be extended further for those suffering from endometriosis, adenomyosis, polycystic ovary disease or other related conditions. A doctor’s note for those specific conditions would need to be presented only once a year. The additional leave, according to the Green plan, would be enshrined in the ‘Workers Rights and Employment’ section of the party’s ‘Policies for a Sustainable Society’.

Interestingly, the motion for 36 days of menstrual leave was submitted by a male party member, Allan McLeod. He serves as a trade union representative for the Darlington Green Party and has previously been a member of the National Disciplinary Committee. Social media posts suggest McLeod is a passionate trans activist.

It comes as Zack Polanski yesterday attempted to bolster his economic credentials in a speech to the British Chambers of Commerce. The Green leader pledged to instil ‘clarity, stability and a serious vision’ for business and the economy.

I have no idea if they still want to force equal pay with 36 extra days of sick leave. A lot of Universities primarily cater to foreign students because they bring in a lot more money. Look at LSE, their student body is about 2/3rds international. Other top universities also aim for ints because they help subsidise stem programs.

It’s the bullshit student housing that’s becoming the main problem. Cities all over the country are having their centres filled with bullshit multi-storey rabbit hutches only for students, who never mix with locals and have no links to the city or its history and culture. Cities are filling with rootless part-time residents who only want a supermarket and some coffee shops, and couldn’t give a shit about the public library, the market, or the local sports clubs.

Meanwhile, many house rentals are being taken off the market for normal people and instead rented room by room to students, for a silly profit because foreigners have no clue and they have to live somewhere. They don’t understand bin collections or that you can’t just take ducks from the local pond to eat. Half of the year the house sits empty in a street with half the other houses empty for the same reason too. Families can no longer find houses to rent for a decent price, and on the off chance they do, the standards are fucking abysmal because again, foreign students have no clue and they just put up with it as it’s not their home, just temporary lodgings.

So, universities might bring in more people, but they destroy cities’ housing, culture, history and economy for the locals.
