UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Yes, the belief going into today was that Labour were the favourites.

Rupert is at the count. Farage has reportedly left, which is his MO whenever his party is in contention but loses.
Yeah, it was kind of a given that Labour were going to win, the question was how well Lowe's party would do. And if Restore beat Reform, well, they already pulled out the "claim they have a neo-nazi that started a street gang when he was 2 years old helping them" type attacks, so who knows where they go from here.

They do indeed all blend together, because the exact same thing always happens: He got OLD, he hit the WALL, and he got SAD. It's amusingly parallel to how they hypothesize the fate of the wahmens. No happy endings or settling down either, he lasted 2 years as an Armenian Apostolic before apostatizing the faith of his ancestors because it was "too woke", last I checked he was in ROCOR, he's DFE'd now of course but is still childless and SAD to my knowledge.
The main value of stories like RooshV's is that hedonism is bad, and that's without even going into the whole "rape as a property offense" angle.
7 years later, pink triangles will still obsess over him...

Official results are in, SNP didn't just lose Aberdeen South they got utterly and completely BTFO:

SNP however have taken the other Scottish by-election in Arbroath and Broughty Ferry

*EDIT* Numbers are in for Arbroath, the absolute fucking state of Labour in 4th

I do hope we will be surprised like Rupert claims. If Andy Burnham gets in, do you think he'll actually have the support to overthrow Starmer? Would he be better or worse?
According to The New Statesman he's got the numbers to make a proper challenge: given Starmer's popularity is in the toilet I'd give him good odds.
It's hard to see how he would be worse, but I'm not exactly optimistic about the future.

Well, Burnham won it, I'll see if I can't find the vote totals.

Not the best possible result for Restore, but it's a brand new party, and utterly btfoing the Cons, Greens and Lib Dems is good for a start.
Also Farage got btfo with that sort of vote share, and all Reform Wet Blankets have lost the "SPLIDDERVOTE" card because of just how poorly Reform actually did.

I like how she made sure to describe in a way that makes it out to be a bit of inconsequential hair pulling. She is really is quite the disappointment.
The professional gender crit feminists are a bunch of stuck up, preachy, snobby cunts. Classism is alive and well.

I look forward to the disaster that will be the leadership challenge. Two Tier Kweer should probably pack his bags ready.

Oof, 6% by Restore, not ideal. Not horrific. But not ideal.
Reform doing so poorly considering how they SHOULD be doing (if they weren't the turquoise tories, that is) is the more interesting part, to me. Like, I wanted Restore to get double digits, but 6% is a good start. The party is still effectively brand new. Niggercattle voting Labour because they've been convinced that the Crypto-Fabian will be better than the Definite-Fabian will never cease to amaze.

More would have been nice, but they did have to start from "OK, who can we get to stand, and who can we get to knock on doors?"
And maybe it's just my personal cope, but I suspect quite a few people will have voted for Burnham just so he can stick the knife in Starmer.
I'm not going to doom over it.

Shame the lazy fucks at the BBC cut off the rest of the candidates because then you miss out on the funniest story. The Rejoin EU party came 10th, behind Count Binface, Howling Laud Hope and an Independent I can only describe as literally batshit fucking crazy. Seriously, his official website is: https://www.nuclearcrimes.com/
For the past thirteen years, I, John Alfred Dyer, have been researching the decommissioning, in 1968, of Shell's Thornton Research Centre’s (Shell/military) nuclear reactor/testing cell. Shell’s nuclear decommissioning turned from a pre-planned criminal act, into a criminal disaster (this is an understatement, of some proportions). For the decommissioning went disastrously wrong. Unable, despite repeated, and increasingly desperate attempts, to separate and retrieve its mandatory high-level (and other) nuclear materials/waste from the reactor's biological shield, Shell authorised/ordered the wholesale disposal/dumping of its (secret) nuclear reactor/testing cell’s materials/waste. The nuclear materials/waste was dumped, or otherwise disposed of, in some of the most densely populated sectors of the United Kingdom.

*EDIT* Holy shit

This is the problem with Carl of Swindon's approach and the terminally online right as a whole, he hyped the shit out of Restore, at one point they were discussing 15s and 20s. They got single digits.

Restore never should have ran in this election because anyone with brains would see everyone, EVERYONE wants Starmer gone. The fastest way to get rid of Starmer is to vote Burnham. What happened? Burnham won a landslide.
Who couldn't have predicted that? Well Carl as it happens.

Rupert did get some free publicity from it, they got a lot more name recognition and while it's a mediocre result it's not a disaster either. The big takeaway for me is Reform have shifted rightward as a result of Restore and that has a knock on effect on everybody.

The window moves rightward, Starmer is a dead goose and I can continue to laugh at Carl of Swindon's uncanny ability to be wrong about everything.

I don't know what I want more: For Burnham to win the leadership campaign and inherit all of Labour's problems with no mandate for significant change... or to lose it to the PM who is likely to get absolutely walloped in two years time.
That's a good question, is Kier going to go full on "no you're trapped in here with me" on his party and refuse to let them remove him? Cause IIRC he has a lot of options to fuck over Labour if they try. i.e., he could call a general election immediately, which since he's losing power anyway why the fuck not? It would completely disrupt the greens and both righty parties, upending the board entirely.
