A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Yeah, Restore is in a uniquely beneficial place because if Andy wins, oh well, it was expected, status quo (he can't be worse than Kier) and the next election is still coming. If they win, it's a class 9 megaton shakeup of the British electoral system and will signify an immediate preference cascade. Even if they lose, as long as they do better than the what, 2% Farage mocked them as getting, then they are ahead of the game. And if they come close or even surpass Reform for 2nd place, then all Reform has is "they split the vooooooote" to try and defend things.

@teriyakiburns It appears David Lammy is hosting PMQs today, so make sure you have your drink of choice on stand-by for a full on gorilla chimp-out.
Why are these people in my country? None of them belongs here. Send them all back.

Is it just or reasonable, that most voices against the main end of government should enslave the less number that would be free? More just it is, doubtless, if it come to force, that a less number compel a greater to retain, which can be no wrong to them, their liberty, than that a greater number, for the pleasure of their baseness, compel a less most injuriously to be their fellow-slaves. They who seek nothing but their own just liberty, have always right to win it and to keep it, whenever they have power, be the voices never so numerous that oppose it.
John Milton

The finest opportunity ever given to the world was thrown away because the passion for equality made vain the hope for freedom
Lord Acton

Only correction I'd make to Milton is I'm not sure it is the government in the majority. The minority appear to be oppressing the majority.
I've finished "The Road to Serfdom" now. The main conclusion Hayek draws seems to be that socialism leads to nationalisation which leads to totalitarinism.

So Hayek has told me that socialism is evil and oppressive, Acton that the equality sought under two tier justice denies freedom and Milton that it is okay to fight for my freedom.

Have I been radicalised ?!
if Andy wins, oh well, it was expected, status quo (he can't be worse than Kier)
This was discussed at work today. The Bond Markets hate Burnham ( don't forget, he "won't be in hock to the bond markets" - the markets won't have forgotten that stupid comment ). So I expect a nice Gilt Yield bonus if this twat gets the PM job - that's on top of the moron tax that we're already paying thanks to Rachel and co.
The result of this is that everyone will feel even poorer - so yes - in at least the financial sense - it can get even worse !

I've just been looking online to see what coverage there is of the report. Daily Mail has nothing on it and if you search for Rupert Lowe it's just a shower of hit pieces. BBC have nothing on it, of course. Sky have reported on it and GB News have covered it because I guess they have to. But they've managed to avoid linking to it, the fuckers. TPTB are doing their best to sit on this before the by-election.
I like to use Mumsnet as a weathervane for this sort of thing and overwhelmingly on there they're trying to discredit it. The media will do much the time but have to take longer to put together credible critiques.

In unsurprising timing Operation Beaconport had an update on 15/06.

Operation Beaconport is shaping a new national police practice for investigating group-based child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE).

The operation is being led by the National Crime Agency and delivered in partnership with the CSE Taskforce, Tackling Organised Exploitation Programme, Crown Prosecution Service and police forces.

With victims and survivors at its heart, Operation Beaconport’s guidance will advise detectives on how to investigate allegations of group-based CSAE like serious and organised crime.

The document will ensure that police forces use a wide array of specialist investigative tools, so that more perpetrators will be arrested and more children will be protected from harm.

It will also set out clear guidance on victim and survivor care, so that every person receives the right support from the first moment they report a crime to police and throughout the investigation.

Operation Beaconport has already trained more than 800 police officers across England and Wales in victim-and-survivor-centred and trauma-informed approach. Hundreds more officers will receive the training throughout the summer, to ensure that they are better equipped to support victims and survivors.

Since Operation Beaconport commenced last year, police forces have gathered and submitted to the operation data relating to tens of thousands of investigations. The operation has begun analysing the data to gain an unprecedented level of national insight into group-based sexual offending committed against children.

The information is being combined with live data from forces and the NCA, using the NCA’s specialist data analysis capability and new, innovative technology that has been developed by the Tackling Organised Exploitation Programme.

This will enable policing to quickly identify offending trends - including criminality spanning multiple counties – so that it can better detect and prevent offending, safeguard more victims and survivors and make communities safer.

The data collection has already led to the identification of new cases of suspected offending in four force areas, which is now being investigated by the appropriate forces.

In June 2025, the Home Secretary announced that the NCA would lead a national review of group-based child sexual abuse investigations that had been closed.

Subsequently, the NCA asked police forces to examine 15 years’ worth of records, to identify and refer to Operation Beaconport cases meeting criteria which it set out in November last year.

Forces were asked to refer cases where:

  • allegations of sexual offending were made between 1st January 2010 and 31st March 2025;
  • the case involves two or more suspects;
  • a decision was made by police or the CPS to take no further action against suspects;
  • the case involves one or more victims and survivors; it includes contact offences;
  • the suspects have not been identified as deceased;
  • the case has not previously been subject to a victim right to review or any other independent review process.
Officers from Operation Beaconport are assessing the referrals made by police to identify those that are in scope to be reviewed.

The reviews are extensive and will establish whether or not the decision to close investigations was right in each case, and whether there are viable lines of enquiry for reinvestigation.

At this early stage, the reviews have identified closed cases from eight force areas that may have viable lines of inquiry. The forces have been directed to reopen these cases, to determine the next steps in relation to any reinvestigation.

Operation Beaconport is committed to putting victims’ and survivors’ needs and voices at its heart, so reinvestigations will only be carried out with their agreement. The team has been developing an online portal through which victims and survivors will be able to indicate whether they would support a reinvestigation of their case.

Further details of the portal will be publicised once the work is complete.

NCA Director General, Graeme Biggar, said:

“Operation Beaconport is the most comprehensive and complex investigation into child sexual exploitation and abuse in UK history.

“After months of careful joint work with policing to lay the foundations, we have sent the first cases back to forces to be reopened. This is the first step toward seeking justice for victims and survivors.

“An investigation of this magnitude will take time. Operation Beaconport is working with determination to get it right for victims and survivors.”

15 June 2026

Even the BBC have admitted there's thousands of cases that have been dropped that should not have been. Unfortunately given the stance of the Establishment we know where their efforts will be focused.

Human error could have led to criminal cases involving alleged grooming gangs being dropped, the early stages of a massive review have found.

Operation Beaconport - a National Crime Agency project tasked with unearthing failings to tackle grooming gangs - is set to look at thousands of cases where police forces and the Crown Prosecution Service decided to take no further action against suspects.

Police say that there appear to be cases where lines of inquiry were not pursued properly, victim accounts were not taken, and suspects were not interviewed as they should have been.

Investigations that were wrongly closed with no further action taken have already been discovered.

"Initial reviews have identified that in some cases where there has been a decision to take no further action, there were available lines of inquiry that could have been pursued", said the National Crime Agency's deputy director Nigel Leary.

"We've seen in those cases what appears to be potentially human error.

"We've seen in some cases that those investigations haven't followed what we would characterise as proper investigative practice, actually that would have contributed to the no further action decision," Mr Leary added.

The issue of grooming gangs has made headlines in recent months - with a national inquiry into the issue in England and Wales thrown into turmoil by disagreements before it had even got under way.

Operation Beaconport is a national policing operation led by the NCA and was set up earlier this year in a bid to eliminate inconsistencies in how cases are handled by police forces. It is reviewing cases between January 2010 and March 2025.

It is not clear how much the operation will cost or how long it will take.

So far, 1,273 cases relating to allegations of group-based child sexual abuse and exploitation identified by 23 police forces have been referred to the investigation team.

Of these, 236 relate to allegations of rape, which Operation Beaconport is reviewing as a priority.

The NCA expects the operation to involve thousands of officers from across policing, with Mr Leary claiming it will be "the most comprehensive investigation of its type in UK history".

In response to the review's early findings, the Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said: "The grooming gangs scandal was one of the darkest moments in this country's history.

"This government initiated this national policing operation to track down the evil child rapists that perpetrated these crimes, and put them behind bars where they belong."
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c201x4d7z5no
As part of the review, the ethnicity of suspects and victims will be recorded. Officers admit to finding gaps in the existing data that they are trying to fill. They will also aim to flag dangerous suspects, and any that are at risk of fleeing the country.

The NCA says better data sharing between multi-agency teams and more coordinated efforts to track and disrupt offenders will also be developed to help them tackle these crimes more effectively.

The investigation into grooming gangs and other non-familial sexual abuse in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013, cost £89m over 11 years.

Last month, the Metropolitan Police announced it was reviewing 9,000 cases of child sexual exploitation.

It is likely that some of these cases will be checked by Operation Beaconport, which is looking at cases involving two or more suspects. It will also focus on allegations where there have been multiple victims, the suspects are still alive, and the case has not already been independently reviewed.

The review will run alongside the national public inquiry, announced by the government earlier this year.

Richard Fewkes from the National Police Chiefs' Council said that some victims will just want to feel listened too.

"Justice means different things for different victims and survivors, and no one victim and survivor is the same.

"For some, justice is just being believed, perhaps for the first time, by someone in authority, being listened to," he said.

Last month, a watchdog said that while police forces had made significant progress in tracking grooming gangs and child exploitation, "significant challenges" remained.

Inconsistent definitions, data accuracy issues and poor national co-ordination risk undermining efforts to protect vulnerable children, His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services said in a progress report.

It found only 37% of child exploitation cases were accurately flagged on police systems, with opportunities to protect children still being missed.

A Home Office spokeswoman said the inspectorate's report showed "important progress" had been made but acknowledged there was "more to do".

Shadow home secretary Chris Philip said the Home Office's failure to adopt a definition for group-based child sexual exploitation was keeping "the system blind to patterns of abuse".

These are the based women that people on this site have been going on about? Jesus fucking christ, we're doomed.
The site mostly read the trans stuff where the debate is much more settled.

Press further in the thread and will you see those women getting the bit between the teeth on the important topics but Mumsnet is one with a lot of accounts that glow. It's a good place to see early propaganda plans before the usual media suspects maintstream them.

Whose watching the match tonight and who is having a takeaway?
Watching the match with my own homemade takeaway. There's enough darkies on the fucking pitch without me contributing to the darkie hospitality sector.

If we make it far enough to where we're playing on a Saturday night I'll probably get absolutely smashed and get a greasy paki kebab.

Liz Kendall is now openly talking about VPN ban incoming, with 2nd tranche of bans to be announce in July.

I'm sure there will be ways around it, there always is, but the noose tightens with each one of these bans. It's insane the UK is joining this list of countries:

Especially with how they screeched about "leaving the ECHR would align us with Russia and Belarus". Not such a problem when it comes to banning freedom of expression, increasing censorship and state surveillance.

Reform winning would be a massive slap in the face for Burnham and this would make it worth it.

There's a few places online that would be incandescent with rage and confusion if Reform were to win- these are the sorts of people who think Starmer is too right wing and unironically refer to Rupert Lowe as Ruprecht.

Although a Restore win is what I'd actually want, being able to watch on as they immolate from a Reform victory would make it worth it.
