UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

My favourite part about this thread being pissed off is when I read shit I can read it as kun' instead of caaaaaaaaaaaant'hhhh.
cops in riot gear and protesters with pikes ect.
Riot gear would offer essentially zero protection against any sort of pole weapon. A bec de corbin would cause more damage to a person than most rifles would. Even with full military plate carriers you're fucked.

POLICE ARE VISIBLY PUSHING THE PEOPLE
Hey British frens, American here. You boys need to fix this now before it gets worse. It's already bad, but this can get so much worse. Fixing this now will involve cuts, scrapes and bruises. That's okay. Fixing it when it gets worse involves that "fun party" we had amongst ourselves back in the 1860's. That's much less okay, as it had a substantially higher body count than harsh language, some pushing and shoving and a few good hard punches.

Your government is acting as a foreign occupation force. Y'know how idiot liberals in America complain that Trump winning a fair election by an overwhelming popular vote is "tyranny?" Yeah, that's not tyranny. This is. This is its first symptom. You have a righteous grievance against your government, which has clearly and unquestionably wronged you, and it is not only laughing at your complaints and ignoring your demands for justice, it is punishing you for even daring to be angry.

That is tyranny in action. Push back now while it's (relatively) easy. It gets much harder later.

Hampshire police are upset everyone was spreading the wrong PC Parsons, who is now getting death threats apparently (X). This could be easily rectified by posting the names of the officers involved through appropriate channels, such as the courts. One officer has resigned.

Hey Hampshire police? You're not in a position to decide "what we cannot accept" at this point. You will sit there and "accept" everything being inserted into you, from harsh language to (hopefully) firings, defunding, shame, humiliation, anger, rage, hatred, righteous fury, and a good helping of fear. You fucked up. You should be scared. You are being punished. Pray someone with a stronger sense of justice and a compromised sense of "strict adherence to the tenets of law and order" doesn't take interest and choose to punish you further.

That triggered a memory, I had a teacher explain to us how police in riot gear are defenseless against a good archer. I honestly can't even remember the context, I guess I'm a failed manchurian candidate.

Interesting! My experience of UK Poles is in a different part of the country and I knew even first generation immigrants who were studying for degrees like teaching, accounting and business studies in UK universities while working part time in restaurants
Fucking hell they were killing and eating swans near me, living like tribesmen in the Borneo jungle. I have fond memories of the insane shit they did (armed robbery of rural post offices) but the Haitians were right when they called them the blacks of Europe.

UKSploosh showing police chasing people down a residential road. EDIT: it's people chasing the police off. lot more face covering and hoodies showing up now. 1 hour till sunset

Police withdrawing back towards their vans to consolidate, whilst the crowd follows behind them chucking bins at them. I'm not sure exactly why as I thought the area the police had blocked off was the path to the murderer's house and if the police fall back the people could proceed.

Not quite a mob yet. Rowdy, though.

EDIT: The protestors not that aggressive. Outnumber the police by got to 10:1 at least, but nobody really pushing on the police, missiles mostly light stuff. Police vans pulling back with police slow-walking backwards behind them now. I'm not exactly certain why the police are walking back as the crowd weren't pushing back. People saying on the stream they're trying to trap people.

I did suspect earlier that the only thing holding people back was they hadn’t decided who to be mad at yet. Sounds like that decision has been made.

I'm still firmly in the 'nothing ever happens' camp, or if something does happen it'll be enough to give TPTB an excuse to crack down further without actually being enough to change things for the better.

Police only police things if they think they're in control. If they think they're dealing with a mob that could cause them serious harm, they fall back and try to document crime to prosecute after the danger has gone. It's what they did in the 2011 riots, hence all the vans driving around with faces on.
And if one is paranoid, maybe they hope the mob will attack the wrong house so there's ammo to condemn these people for targeting an innocent family.
