UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

EDIT: Jenrick proposing that once data is published, if it shows men of a certain country abuse girls more than others, that country ought to be struck from the visa list and people banned. Have Reform changed their stance on the "red list"? (Especially pakistan)
Don’t worry. Once Zia Yusuf and Zahawi hear about this they’ll immediately backtrack.

Should have stuck it out. Robert Jenrick giving a very solid speech now. Go Jenrick!
Jenrick's speech is very rehearsed (in a positive way) especially his facts on sentences being given out. He came very prepared. I imagine that his experiences as a father affect him deeply, and he admitted to not paying attention to the crimes before.
More Jenrick: Strip citizenship from dual citizens, if countries won't take them, "why on earth are our constituents paying millions of pounds of foreign aid", so cut foreign aid and stop offering any visas (student, travel, work). "Use every lever of the British state to get these vile individuals out of the country" um based alert???
Lib Dems are up. Edit they are victim focused but will "support any measure" that the House proposes

Contrasting his speech right now with Farage napping like an old pug in the row in front of him, there's a Hell of a difference.

Will Lowe speak?
He spoke around 10-15mins in and just read some of the examples from report without editing or additional context. Has just sat it out since then. Probably speak again later I would have thought.

Not sure who this woman is now who is saying that rape is non-consensual. Well-meaning but not sure that's a revelation. EDIT: My apologies to her - she's now reading off actual ethnicity stats for those charged and not very favourable to "Asians". Good for her. Also an actual survivor of child abuse.

Yes he was very impressive. It feels innapropriate to ask 'Reform leadership challenge' right now but ? This issue isn't going away at all.
More fucking statistics. We know Brits abuse kids too and we need to hang them also, how is this hard.
How many White girls have been raped, is the question now. Clearly made people uncomfortable imho.

She's probably trying to infer that rape is a violent non consensual act in which no is said multiple times.

The girls targeted by these Muslim gangs, more often than not, came from shitty, poor, broken homes. They might not have said no, but given they were groomed so hard they couldn't consent, really.

These poor lasses came from the very homes most affected by the decades long onslaught of shit levelled at the working classes. Destruction of community because of geographical mobility, loss of entry level jobs to gimmiegrants, driving down of wages because of an influx of cheap labour, plummeting educational standards, ever shrinking social mobility and a constant, grinding, sneering contempt for the working classes by the middle classes.

Their families and their plight are a fucking stain on the social conscience of this country and we should be ashamed of what we've allowed to happen to them, and really, what we've done to them, by our obsession with importing in hostile communities who actively despise us.

Edited to say: this is where "tolerance" towards diversity has got us an it sickens me to my core how certain types of people will wax enthusiastic about the food and rhapsodize about their nice times with their pet jibagoos but they go very, very fucking quiet when you bring up raped white girls.

So religious data isn't important but nationality and ethnicity is? 'We don't know how to collect data on religion?' you can fucking tell, if they wear a Kirpan or don't shave their beards, or wear a cross and work in a church. My god, religion for Afghans and Pakistani's isn't like Anglicans who don't really feel like christians, it is CRUCIAL to their culture, you can TELL they are Muslim. Why try to weasel out of collecting religious data just because some people 'won't say what religion they belong to'?
EDIT: some lady bringing up Sikh girls are also targeted (which was not mentioned in the initial paper; i also believe the initial paper does not include male victims), which is very true and in fact shows HOW important the Muslim religious violence factor is.

I haven't been paying attention but it sounds like the migrants have realized it's open season on white people in Britain now

Just have two fields: Self-declared religion (if any), and suspected / inferred religion. E.g. if someone is going to a mosque you have an idea what it might be.

It's not going to be perfect, but you can have the field for recording it when you have it.

Also, I know Sikhs have been a topic in this thread, but this is the second time it's come up in this meeting that the Sikh communities are calling for the recording of this information. Recall that the reason for the religious requirement to carry a knife, was that the knife is supposed to be for dealing with Muslims.

MP with the white streak in her hair is Natalie Fleet (Labour) for Bolsover in Derbyshire. She's very passionate.
EDIT: youth centre mention, drink if you had it on your bingo card. Government is being challenged over not including Bradford on the list of areas to be investigated?
Henry Nowak's dad is currently outside court calling out the Hampshire police.

Even then it's fucking retarded. Grooming and whatever inability to say no or lack of violence aside. It's still a shitty description. Rape should just be prolonged sexual assault and sexual assault should just be any non consenting sexual act. I know they're muslims so they're not off raping men but still. Fucking retarded definition.

Lee Anderson, Reform, (I believe), telling Fleet that victims 'do not want to be called brave', and asking if British nationalists will be locked up for life and foreigners deported, no answer.
No 'No', on the petition. Stream over.

Maybe. I found there's a touch of the theatre about her. But I could be wrong and I don't want to accuse on a topic like this.

Can someone more familiar with parliamentary procedure tell me what just happened? The "ayes" have it at the end so... what does that mean? Is it just "aye, we have discussed this" or is it "aye, we agree this should be done"? Somebody explain to me, please!

'Yes' wins. It's a very informal way of just saying 'we all agree' and the motion is approved/passed, if the calls of 'No' were louder it would be 'the Nos have it', if it was equally loud the Speaker calls division. IIRC they still say this when counting votes in the main House.

EDIT: on the Nowak case. 12 police officers have had to show up in court due to an altercation in court between the Digwa and Nowak families, with a 'man in a turban' shouting 'racist' at the judge according to those present.

Lindsay Hoyle has forced the government to make a statement on Nowak's murder (archive down, pending)
Starmer has issued a statement as a QUOTE TWEET to a Sky News tweet.
"This an awful, shocking case. Henry's loved ones have gone through the trauma of a long trial and endured Henry's killer making up appalling claims about their son who was thoughtful, kind and deeply loved.

It is right that the IOPC is investigating the police’s response to his senseless murder.

And we must end the cycle of tragedy by tackling the horror of knife crime. Henry's family, friends, his university and the city of Southampton will continue to feel his loss, and our thoughts will always be with them."

Oh, I got that it was a "yes" but I was wanting certainty on what they were saying 'yes' to. We're actually getting ethnic, religious and immigration data recorded and released to the public on rape cases...? Like, for real?

oh sorry, yes! The question was from E-petition 730605
Mandatory collection and publication of certain child sexual offender data

Closed on 16 January 2026

Place a statutory requirement on councils, the police, the Crown Prosecution Service and all other related institutions to collect, record and publish the nationality, ethnicity, immigration status and religion of child sexual offenders, including gang based crime.

To protect children and inform public policy, we believe it is essential to collect, record and publish the nationality, ethnicity, immigration status and religion of all child sexual offenders, including gang based crime. This data will allow for better understanding of offender demographics, ensure transparency, and support targeted safeguarding strategies. Without this information, critical patterns may be missed, weakening efforts to prevent abuse and protect vulnerable children.
The hall votes 'yes' for the data to be collected and published.

Calling a rape or sexual assault victim "brave" is ridiculous. You're not brave. You're forced to deal with a situation that is abhorrent. You either get through it and live with it, or it destroys you.

There's other situations that force you to make the same choice, things like awful deaths or traumatic experiences. But rape is absolutely preventable. It shouldn't, it needn't happen, ever.
