A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

It's not the norm, no. I'm not sure why, I'm sure someone else on here would know,however.

The heat itself isn't usually the sole issue. It's the humidity which goes with it that's the issue. Where I am just now, it's 28c but near enough 100% humidity levels.

This said, I've slept fine today but sleeping in the day is easier because homes (especially older ones, for context, my house was built circa 1860) dump their heat overnight.

It was warm,but not uncomfortably so. I wouldn't want to be sleeping upstairs here at night though, for sure. Perks of night shifts I guess.

All the above said, I also have a cellar and an attic so I opened the cellar door and popped the hatch for the attic when I got in, and opened all doors in between. I could feel all the warm air getting sucked out which was great, the place cooled right down in no time at all.

Homes in the UK are often brick built rather than whatever homes in the USA are made out of (dry wall/ plasterboard I think?) so that makes a huge difference.

I think the national grid,which supplies electricity would disintegrate if most people had AC in their homes. It's on its knees as it is.

If we had proper police and journalists facebook would be monitored constantly and there would be an endless stream of arrests and deportations of these people. PIP was never meant to pay for bills. That's universal credit. PIP is to pay for extra resources you need as a disgusting deformed mutant who cannot function in the real world.. Which means it's usually just an extra few hundred quid you spend on fags or booze. Very few people spend PIP on disabled needs as the benefit is intended to be. I don't think PIP is a bad idea, but I know enough disabled people who live a life of luxury partly due to PIP. An extra few hundred quid a month is the difference between slumming it and owning top of the line tech or paying for their hobby.

Per KWh, electricity in the UK costs around 2.5x what it does in the USA. Plus you'd actually only need it for 1-2 months of the year. Traditional British architecture handles the heat well, being cavity wall brick buildings for the most part. Absorbs the heat in the day, lets it out in the night.

But in particular that 2.5x electricity cost. Plus as someone said up thread, our national grid would probably collapse if it were standard. A few people have it, not many.

Handles it well to a point. Once you get past a certain temperature it's fucked. Once the outside gets to a certain point this shit just fucking heats up and the residual heat that refuses to leave because I can gape my arsehole wider than these fucking windows and you get it where it just doesn't meaningfully cool down. Like yea it goes from incredibly fucking hot to just fucking hot but I don't want either. Once the insulation heats up to a certain point then it's staying there until the outside temperature goes back down. Fucking dying of dehydration from sweating so much in the day to come home to try and relax in a sauna. Can't even have a drink with some nice cold ice in because all the ice cube trays and space in the freezer are on dedicated dog cooling duty.

Police have launched a murder appeal after a boy was stabbed during a street fight in Hackney.
The victim was found by officers after they were called to reports of disorder involving machete-wielding thugs in Towpath Walk around 7.15pm on Monday night.
The Met says the trouble began during a house party on the same street.
As police responded to the disorder, more reports came in about a stabbing and possible gunshots.
In a statement, a Met spokesperson said: "Officers attended, along with the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance, and found a teenage boy with stab wounds in Poplar Close.
"Despite the efforts of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Officers are in the process of formally identifying the victim and informing his next-of-kin."
A crime scene is in place spanning Towpath Walk, Poplar Close and surrounding areas while officers carry out urgent enquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Ben Massink, of the Met’s Specialist Crime command, said: “Our thoughts remain with the victim and his family – we are working at pace to ensure all his loved ones are informed and offered specialist support from officers.

A teenage boy was hacked to death with a machete in Hackney, East London

A large fight broke out after a house party spilled onto the streets in Hackney last night. Multiple individuals armed with machetes were involved, and there were also reports of gunshots.

A teenage boy was hacked with a machete and suffered critical stab wounds. Despite the efforts of paramedics and London’s Air Ambulance, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

No suspects have been arrested so far. A large crime scene remains active in the area.

Interesting development - I was told numerous stories about what happened yesterday at Crosby. One being it was a group of Asian men attacking teenage girls. Some as young as 14.

I dismissed it as rumours and told people to watch out for racism. People unfairly targeting Asians and making lies up about them.

But I’ve just been sent this. Now unless there is a conspiracy to frame them. It’s now looking like this is the case.

The only other possibility is that this was 2 separate incidents. But either way we can’t live in peace with savages who do this on a public beach in front of families.

I don’t want to speculate. So I’m going to bite my tongue on this for the time being in case I’m wrong.

It has since been confirmed that teenage girls have been attacked with a bladed item. But the attacker has not been confirmed.

I’m currently speaking to the Echo to work out what’s going on.

Keep an eye on this one. In Ireland a year or so ago, there was a big media and political uproar about a man getting more or less off with assaulting a woman. Demands are made to reassess the case, she was interviewed about how shit it felt to see him walk and gained a nation's sympathy. Sentencing on the guy is reviewed, he goes to jail, she's interviewed all glad about it. Everyone's happy for her. The next thing she's standing on a stage demanding hate speech laws.
