UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

22C is way too hot for a Celt. 15C max. My poor mother would spend her entire summer with only her head above the waves given half the chance. I swear to god she’s part mermaid.
More like a whale.

Get an portable air conditioner from Amazon. Costs like £500 quid. Run it during the afternoon and use fans and open windows during the night. I can deal with the heat with a normal fan, but pets don't need to suffer it so a portable unit works there. Put it in the main room you're in and have the pets with you.

Remember you can cut up and freeze most fruit. Frozen nanas are good for this weather.

I’m fucking loving this weather.
Why spend hundreds going Spain only to be surrounded by twats when you can get that and the weather at home?

These things suck (literally). They will make the room cooler but very inefficient, noisy, you have to tape hoses into gaps in windows, etc. better to get a minisplit installed, it will cost 2 or 3x the price but it’s worth it.
I'll sit here with a hose out my window (no tape) and being cool while others melt. Noise and efficiency aren't much of a concern for 3 days of heat wave.

It's very easy to convert a single hose portable AC to dual hose. I've done it.

What do people think about Robert Jenrick sharing private messages from Orla Minihane, where she asks for support in becoming a local MP candidate and says she wants to be involved in creating Reform's safeguarding policy for women and girls. Seems like quite the milquetoast reveal? Woman who is doing just that for Restore, had hoped to do it for the party she was a member of, before growing disillusioned with them.
Minihane is a spokeswoman (founder?) for the Pink Ladies movement before becoming attached to Restore in March. It would be perfectly normal for her to message any MP or councillor to talk policy or joining, it's just lobbying at that point. Jenrick is also sharing 'nuke' messages about... womens safety? Perhaps it is because her and the Pink Ladies sole issue is womens' safety, but sharing these messages is snake behaviour and shows he's liable to drop DMs if anyone DID want to approach him. Oh no she thought Reform would stop women being raped? Now she's accepted a position in Restore? How shocking. Truly the Dreyfuss affair all over again.

If you guys are hot put reflective tinfoil on the windows if you haven't already. Went to buy a crate of cider at the garage on the self checkout yday, guy puts it thru without checking my ID, after buying he comes up to me to ask for ID and I realise its some new skinny jeet and he starts going on about how he needs to check something for the cameras and he can let me off this time but I need to be careful. I told him he needs to check ID before he approves the sale, retard thats the law, before he could say anything else and left because he was trying to lean thru the machines. I think he thought I was underage :/ he had extremely creepy vibes

I think his point was that it is manipulative. It really kicked off when Climate Change stuff started getting pushed even harder.
For sure. Colour is not a great way to convey information. I miss the little suns and clouds that the weatherman would stick on the map as he was talking, they were much more useful. I think the colour is downstream though, it used to be that "hotter than spain" was good weather for barbecues, daytrips to the seaside, and popping into Boots for some aloe vera. It's taken a lot more than some red on a map to get where we are.

Reform UK’ Robert Kenyon has in the past claimed women “can’t drive” and get abortions for “vanity purposes” to “shag anyone they want”. He admitted: “I’m sexist, sorry but I am” (X)
:story:
First all of the Indians, now a Kenyon? smh...

guy puts it thru without checking my ID [...] he can let me off this time but I need to be careful
He didn't do his job but that's ok, he forgives you, as long as you don't do it again. Just as British as you and me.

Can’t we just make walk-in fridges a thing?
If you get a proper heat pump that's reversible (and more expensive), that's basically it, though I'm not sure how well it would work with our radiators, compared to the forced air that the Americans tend to use. If only we could have heat pumps that run on gas and not electricity...

The room I'm in is 27c. I find it quite comfortable. The only annoyance is having to drink more so you need to get up more. I have a small fan on but it's not pointed at me. Probably time for air conditioning since it's getting a bit hot for the animals. Peparami hates being hot.

I went to go stand in the supermarket near the fridges to cool down to find they've fucking shut off half the fridges AND the freezers to ''help keep the other fridges cold'' what in the 3rd world load shedding is this.

Sarah Wakefield is the new Green candidate for Makerfield. (X)

Sarah Wakefield (above) has been announced as Green Party candidate for the upcoming Makerfield by-election. Sarah is 38 years old, a mum with two young children, and a councillor on Manchester City Council. Currently on maternity leave as a charity director, she previously worked in retail with a focus on sustainable food and is a trustee of a community organisation.

On being announced as Green Party candidate, Sarah Wakefield said:

“I am proud to be representing the Green Party in the Makerfield byelection. It is vital in a democracy that voters are given a choice of who they want to vote for. Together we can bring back the hope that politics can create a better life for ourselves and our children. This is what the Green Party represents.

“We showed in Gorton and Denton we can take on and beat Reform, whose backward-looking and divisive politics needs to be challenged head-on with a message that the future can be better and fairer than the failed status quo. Don’t vote in anger, vote in hope.”
They haven't said what charity but I believe it might be Eating Better (X). She may also be a Trustee (X) (or former, these charities never update their websites imho) for the Brian Mercer Trust (who give grants to relieve suffering).

Eating Better Mission statement. They sound like they just want to give kids better food but its all social justice language about muh food environments.
The power of our alliance comes from our breadth, diversity and expertise. From environmental and animal welfare charities to public health and social justice, we’re working together to create a fair and sustainable food environment, where everyone has access to healthy, affordable and nutritious food. Our focus is ‘less and better’ meat and more plants, which is better for us, for nature and for the planet.

Our goal is to halve our meat and dairy consumption in the UK by the end of this crucial decade of action to reduce GHG emissions, protect nature and get us all eating better.

Am I the only one here who prepared for summer?
When I was in Manchester late last year I bought a bunch of replacement fans just in case. I distinctly remember the weird looks I got while shlepping them back to the car because it was a stereotypical cold, shitty, rainy Manchester day.

Of course Sod's law now guarantees that when the missus and I come over in a few weeks the weather will be shit.

She's a brand new member of Manchester city council, a seat she's been in for less than two weeks. I'm sure her constituents are chuffed to bits that she's fucking off to be an MP right after starting the job. Clear desperation to drag her off like this.
Thats interesting. Makes me think they were scrounging for a female candidate (to both 'be woke' and perhaps oppose Restore) and could not find anyone appropriate. It's also been a couple days since they kicked Chris off, were all the other options browns you think?

Britgirl0000 on twitter has been posting and exposing a facebook group of migrants who are informally swapping their council houses and accomodation. Muslim from Glasgow (X) wanting to move to London, and another in London with a 3 bed house (X) wanting to swap to Manchester or Bolton; they are even doing 'chains' of swaps with multiple people swapping properties in a long line (ie you trade someone for a house in Cardiff, who gives it to someone for their house in London) I will keep an eye out for journos picking this up soon as they seem to be prowling around for stories like the Kurd mini mart money.

This man is so utterly wholesome. If only our politicians were like this.

He needs to watch his chips with that seagull behind him, though. Fucking thing has a face like a bag of spanners - wassup, seagull, no crisps to nick at the local Waitrose?

That’s a mini-split, they have a small heat exchanger with a fan in it that goes high up on the wall inside, common in (European / Asian) hotel rooms and apartments. Works as a heater too, 3x more efficient than a fan heater.

Funnily enough the modern ones do “run on” propane, that’s the working fluid. They still need electricity but guess what, when it’s sunny, solar panels work really well so get those too. And a battery for when there’s a power cut due to everyone suddenly running air conditioning.

Eating better sure as shit doesn't mean halving meat and dairy consumption. Most people could stand to eat a higher proportion of proper meat and full fat dairy.

Also that first photo of her is quite unfortunate as the angle makes her look a bit mannish, and it being the Greens, I assumed she was indeed in possession of a Y chromosome.

Swapping your council house is perfectly legal. My mum did that, although the council were useless and she did all the legwork herself. She had a 3 bedroom semi, which was far too big for her. She went for a walk round the village, and saw a couple (husband, wife who was heavily pregnant and their son) in a 1.5 bedroom bungalow. Knocked on their door, asked if they were council and said,do you need a bigger place. Obviously they said yes and that was it.

The council were surprised she did all this and were concerned she was leaving her home, and yes she was, but social housing is also a resource and if you have more than you need then harsh as it sounds, it should go to someone who needs it.

The real issue is,why are illegal immigrants given social resource anyway? They should be locked up in camps, DNA tested, packed off to wherever they came from, and their countries of origin billed for it.

I'm glad you said that. I think I have some sort of Green Derangement syndrome, whereby I assume evey candidate of theirs is trans until proven otherwise.
She does look well manly, fugly bitch.
