UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Lets get on with some food bickering. Best vegetable on a roast dinner plate?
I know it's heresy to some, but I absolutely love cauliflower cheese with a roast. I always go for the chicken and it's such a good combo. BBC Good Food has the best cauliflower cheese recipe: you have to roast the cauliflower first, and then add the sauce and put it back in the oven. It prevents it from coming out watery, which can happen if you pre-boil the cauli.
I also like green beans with bacon, or roast carrots with a bit of honey and thyme.

I've never heard of this before. How did you even begin to start eating cauliflower cheese with a roast?
Carrots, part roasted, maybe boiled, then fried off in a mix of butter and sugar (or honey if you're feeling posh).
Easy answer. I'm not foreign, broski.
Confirmed foreign. Didn't boil your carrots and peas for an hour until they turned grey.
And @DreinMeinVein, don't worry about it - you may have browner fingers than a gay man's, but they're less brown than his dick!
Please don't tell people about our secret love affair. It's rude.
Boiled cabbage with a bit of gravy is delicious. It breaks up the rest of the richness on a roast dinner plate.

I do some really good roast carrots
Cooking carrots ruins them. In any way. A good carrot is nice and crisp and has a nice snap to it. The only way to eat carrots is after a quick wash and nothing else. Same with mushrooms. Cooking them ruins them, at least for the majority I've tried, I know that some are much better or only edible cooked but I'm not foraging in the woods for my din dins.

I like green beans, carrots, sprouts, brocolli or parsnips. Sweetcorn is nice with a roast, too.
We went to a restaurant once and for some idiotic reason our roast dinners had tinned tomatoes on the plate.

I mean, they are great in a stew - add some texture and crunch. That's cooking them. And little carrots can be nice done with honey but... they're basically the inverse of parsnips. You don't want parsnips raw, you don't want them in a salad, you don't want them grated with a vinaigrette. But they have a better texture than carrots when roasted, they have a better, more present taste when roasted and they are great with a little honey glaze.

Yeah - carrots for raw, parsnips for cooking, except stews - carrot rounds are good in that. Get them right and they still have some crunch but not too much.

EDIT: Just noticed the mushrooms! Sure, I can eat them raw and might eat one or two when I'm cooking them, but to say cooking them ruins them? There are so many things you can use mushrooms for. They're delicious cooked.

Assuming it's done just right, I'd probably say parsnips.
As I age, I appreciate parsnips more. Like you say, they need to be cooked right. It's not as easy to perfect as carrots. The good parsnips can taste supreme. The bad ones are disappointing, IMO.

I tend to overdo roast dinner tbh. I go
Chicken
Sausages
Onions
Roasties
Mash
Carrots
Parsnips
Brocco
Cabbage
Cauliflower
Bread and butter
...and bubble & squeak the following morning?
You must have a very large dining table. Enjoy.

Seems to mostly be a midlands thing.

A bottle of cider, instead of beer or stout, with the roast drippings (if you make your gravy from scratch) is absolutely fantastic. Especially fruity ciders like koppaberg. Don't knock it till you try it.

I honestly can't remember, but I think it might be because my gran always used to do cauliflower cheese as part of Christmas dinner, so it just became a thing in my family. My sister does it too, and she's converted quite a few of her friends. All I can say is that you should try it and see what you think.

Raw mushrooms and cooked mushrooms do taste different, for sure, but it depends on how you cook them IMO. If you fry them, I think you lose a lot of flavour, whereas if you barbecue or roast them, you can intensity the flavour - even more so if you dust them with crushed dried forest mushrooms beforehand 🍄🟫

Raw mushrooms and cooked mushrooms do taste different
Nah it's mostly the texture. I always find any cooked mushroom to be either slimy or gristly leather. Same with carrots, either mush or coal. Admittedly that's most things now I say that. I'm trying to think about things that I would prefer to eat cooked instead of raw and the only things I can think of are potatoes. I guess tomatoes too if you want to argue about what they count as. Even rhubarb. I enjoy a nice stick of rhubarb just peel it and eat it straight. I think I am just a caveman basically. Parsnips and turnips and swedes yea but I don't really like them in any way anyway.

Some things when they're cooked down are fine. If it's no longer a carrot that has been _____ but instead a _____ with carrot then that's fine. Like shepherd's pie, that's not cooked carrots, that's something with carrots cooked in there. Idk if I am eating a carrot just as a carrot then I'm having it raw.

Interesting interesting, and would you describe your home as some sort of...hutch, perhaps? And your feet, are they by any chance considered...lucky?

I know where this is going and no I do not eat my own shit thank you very much.

I've had rabbits before and looking back I'm just not entirely sure I like them as a pet. I liked watching them eat but I just don't know. They're in the awkward spot of being both cute and fluffy enough to want to touch them but also don't really enjoy it. They're just not really petty enough. It's like having an exotic pet that you're just meant to watch and look after but one that you want to do more with. I enjoyed having them but there's a reason why I started off by saying 'had' not 'have'. Also the main diet of a rabbit should be hay and grass not vegetables anyway. I am closer to a hippo instead. A big bog dwelling fat bald cunt.

I dislike having any pet that isn't a dog. I feel bad for birds because they can't fly, I don't like cats and other animals are pointless. Dogs are our prehistoric bros, and all the pet we need.
