UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Quite literally every business has "don't be a fucking retard on the internet about your employer" rule.

When I was doing call centre work a decade or so ago in the first month of someone being in the business they got hauled in to be screamed at for saying something stupid online about the company. They took it down and proceeded to be a fairly productive employee from then onwards with that boundary set.

The twits in the Civil Service are the only things worse than teachers in terms of how many of them decide they should be able to shriek in a banshee-like manner that would see them fired from any other job and then claim they should not be punished for that.

I refuse to say AI should replace them but that's because the people in charge of setting up the automation are worse versions of that quality of human.
AI would have far better personality.

Sir Humphrey would have had the Civil Service mandarins causing trouble for breakfast.

Rachel's spending review is scheduled for tomorrow, amid alternative media reports of falling London house prices. Lotus Eaters did a fantastic piece on it, and it's worth a listen;

This is quite true from personal experience; a friend's son was selling their property in Notting Hill. The property was valued at over 4 million. Took over 3 years and settled for 1.6. The account they use is that of a Kensington flat on the market for 450k, and the seller settled for 250k because they most likely wanted it gone.

The champagne socialists are going to be pissed. Good job, Rachel!

They may as well. They’re the same fucking party anyway.

Last election up north was a shitshow. The usual three twats plus the Greens who want to shut everything down and tax everything thrice because existing is bad for the environment. Some flavour of northern party was all about trannies, so they were out. Yorkshire First (or whatever they’re called) must’ve been run by a disgruntled train spotter cos all they talked about was HS2. Not a sane or common sense view between any of them. What I’d give for a ‘no, fuck off, you’re all incapable, try again’ option.

Your news recap posts are some of the best in this thread and you seem cool. I just think you're huffing too much of the Farage Gas. I'm a Reform member too but I am fully prepared for a complete backstabbing as per common Nige etiquette.
Reform supporters have two fights ahead of them. The first will be to get Reform into power. The second will be to get rid of Farage.

Yes far more than normal.

The extreme sceptic in me is inclined to believe it'll be used to bolster the butbutbut gas bad muh net carbon get rid of your gas boiler and get a heat pump (fucking kek) argument.
Over my dead body will we get a heat pump. They’re fine for some settings but retrofitting into most British housing stock is a stupid idea. The housing isn’t built for it. I’ll keep my gas stove and boiler thanks (and have them serviced by corgi registered technicians at the appropriate intervals….) we’ve also got a wood burner and a healthy woodpile and that’s not getting removed either. We rarely use it, but if the power ever goes off in winter at least the house is warm.

His nibs had a wood burning stove put on last year. I was actually really proud of him at the time because usually he takes ages to make a decision but he was really great with this one.

Best investment ever. Honestly, it's fantastic. Fuck Greta and Ed; burning trees keeps us toasty.

I hope these niggers get raped to death in prison.

I think people are really starting to get fed up with the absurdly overinflated property prices. My friend put her house in Cambridge (which has now reached London average) on the market for 260k and was offered 200k for it. (She paid 240 for it a couple years ago.) Very cheeky but I understand where they're coming from. People have had enough.

Yes I know asylums had issues, but the closure of long term care placements has been a disaster. This lad will never, ever function in or be safe in society. He needs a secure highly supervised residential place
He doesn't deserve safety after what he did, pity the teacher didn't defend herself using fatal force.

Estate Agents.

Scum of the earth, with regards to both selling and renting out domestic properties. The more they over value property, the more their take.

Agreed.

Much as I admire what he has done, he can't outstay his welcome.

Some news in brief:

Interesting that Reeves has pissed off both Yvette Cooper and Sadiq Khan in one go - could one or both be about to quit or demand that Starmer put her feet to the fire?

Twix advert must be axed from TV and 'never shown again'.

Nearly half of all social housing in London is owned by foreigners, costing the taxpayer more than £3.6bn a year.

Is it just me or has there been a lot of these this year?
Yes far more than normal.

There's not been more; there's been more reported. I checked the stats at the ONS and there's typically around 360-380 gas explosions with a fire every year in this country, with about 80 of them being severe enough to cause fatalities. There's no stats for "a house exploded and was destroyed", but it's reasonable to assume that explosion + fatality is enough to at at least partially demolish a house, or cause a fire severe enough to result in a collapse. We've seen one reported every couple of weeks since January, IIRC.

I feel the issue is that we've been primed - one way or another - to notice stories about gas explosions. The national news certainly appears to be reporting on them more than usual. The question then becomes: Is it frequency illusion coming in to play, or is there some nudging going on? Or maybe both. Exploiting the frequency illusion to craft a narrative is a pretty basic propaganda trick.

Ad agencies love a banned advert; it gets them so much attention. You can bet Mars Inc execs are creaming themselves at how much free advertising they're getting on the back of this.

Probably this. I notice these days when I talk to people about stuff they immediately mention the taking points after. This one will be ‘well we need to get rid of gas anyway.’
Yesterday after the Austrian school shooting I had three people say the same thing; ‘guns are too easy to get hold of, what does a civilian need a gun for?’ Like verbatim.
I first noticed this in during coof, to the point I once snapped and said ‘safe and effective’ in reply to one of them, in a parrot skwarrrrk! voice (and they never spoke to me again, oops!)

Listening to Rachel from Accounts, our Chancellor......
will there be any money left in the world after she's finished spending it ?
Taxes are going to go up even more to fund this bullshit. They're at the highest they've ever been already. I can't wait to fund other people's lifestyles even more than I already do.
Labour truly are the party that champions ponces.

What the UK needs more than anything are imi:

Never Despair Speech

2. A hard right that is pan-European in its understanding and forms links across europe with other nationalist groups.

3. White indigenous people to stop giving a shit about being called racist. Being a racial chauvinist should be a badge of honour and those who aren't should carry the burden of shame

The hardest thing really is to get people to realise that it's not all lost and the European people could take it all back. But getting the people to believe that and want that is the hard bit. The doing it would unfold.

If you want to see the NPC update in person, watch something like John Oliver (joking, don't actually watch John Oliver) and see him do a weekly news segment which is just him blasting up talking points and giving the mocking answer the viewer is supposed to give. If you're quick about it, sometimes you can catch someone mid-update and confuse them. I did that with covid just on the cusp between "Big Pharma are Evil Megacorps" and "They are saviours who will protect us". Made a comment using the former paradigm, echoing his usual sentiments just as he was still assimilating the "Pharma Good" updates. He visibly didn't know what to say.

The sheer contempt the British state has for ordinary Britons that they think they need protecting from the below, is hard to reckon. They genuinely think we must not be allowed to see the below, lest we all start somersaulting sports cars off mountain tops.

Mosely was one Hell of a speaker.

EDIT: Edward Mosely speaking out against sweatshop labour.
