UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Última edición por un moderador:
I mean I understand the argument why it should trigger a GE. I suppose the counter is the conservatives having seen all the scadles effectively ousted Boris.

If that would trigger an election they would have been far far less keen to do so knowing many of them would lose their jobs in the process (and polling suggests a slim Labour majority).

This way they can oust Boris and have some time with a new leader to try and rebuild for the next election.

It not only gives the MPs the ability to enact change if they're not happy but takes away a big reason for them not to. The liklihood is if a party is getting rid of their leader its not because they're super popular with the electorate.

Labour are pushing like hell for a GE now Boris has gone but weren't so keep when Brown was crowned (which hilariously was his only opportunity to win a GE because his polling went through the floor once he actually started doing anything).

@Coccxys has covered it excellently and it's part of the reason why I'd like to see any groups that have never been elected before not win. If Risihi or Kemi were to win for example and down the line some other member of the same group was leading either party and was successfully elected there would be countless dribbling discussion about if they're the first "real" election of that group since it would be the people choosing not the party.

To put it to American terms when Biden has a heart attack and soils himself to death on tv and Kamala takes over she will be the first female black president. However if down the line a black female president is actually elected there will be arguments if that president is somehow more significant than Kamala because she was elected by the people rather than selected by her party after the incumbent passed away/resigned.

Suella has backed Truss and they're busy trying to make a deal with Kemi to drop out and support Truss.

The screenshot doesn't want to attach so here's the copy paste story

Suella Braverman has backed Foreign Secretary Liz Truss to be the next Tory leader after being eliminated from the contest to be the next prime minister.

Ex-Chancellor Rishi Sunak came first in the latest round of voting, with Penny Mordaunt second and Ms Truss third.

Ms Truss has been looking to pick up support from the right of the party in a bid to reach the final two.

Former Brexit Minister Lord Frost has urged fourth-placed Kemi Badenoch to step down to back Ms Truss.

Tom Tugendhat is the fifth candidate in the contest, which will see Tory MPs whittle the runners down to two through a series of votes, before a postal ballot of Conservative Party members will decide the winner.

Lord Frost gave the foreign secretary his endorsement before the first of three televised debates later between the candidates.

And writing in the Daily Telegraph, he suggested former equalities minister Ms Badenoch should pull out of the race "in return for a serious job in a Truss administration".

"We need unity among free marketeers. Kemi and Suella Braverman set out convincing programmes, with differing emphases, for change," Lord Frost said.

"But Liz's depth of experience, her energy and ideas - as well as the simple fact she has the most votes of the three - put her in the lead."

However, Ms Badenoch's campaign said she "has no intention of stepping down and is in it to win".

A spokesman for the MP said she had brought "interesting ideas and a new approach to the contest".

Don't know much about the PM race other than Sunak being a disgusting turd who shouldn't be anywhere near a chancellorship position let alone a leadership one, but I keep seeing smear articles popping up about this Penny girl on Sky News that I've never heard of before.
From one 30 second clip I can see some potential milk coming from later stages of media scrutiny.

Mordaunt is another one who can’t define woman, so I don’t want her. Sunak is a twit. Can’t say any of them really have me enthused but Suella seems anti woke enough to be amusing. Can we have a real fire and brimstone proper conservative for once?

Lol Suella's gone.

im getting irredeemably blackpilled as of late- is it all hopeless? is england dead? the tories are corrupt paki cocksuckers, labour is prancing around like a gay headless chicken, the libs are braindead as always and the snp might even break up the union at this point.

what the hell can any of us do anymore? nothing seems to change for the better, nothing seems worth looking forward to. people can barely expect their wages to cover their costs, forcing them into modern serfdom as the council subsidies them (and if they ever do get some cash, they get their benefits cut, draining their coffers until they have to wean on the state again).

massive projects promise prosperity but are barely hidden covers for stealing money from the taxpayer and never get completed- but of course LONDON gets what they want without an issue. that doesnt stop the londoners colonising the commute belt though, pushing further into essex and everywhere else to escape their precious third worlders burning their city to a smolder.

fuck it, i want to leave this shitty country.

Americans can do crazy shit like go off to a deserted county and homestead. I wish you guys could do something like that. Maybe buy the Isle of Man and make it into a refuge for the non-retarded.

At least add the text.
TLDR - It's Rochdale and Telford all other again but the Labour lot are blocking an independent inquiry.

Calls by opposition councillors for a government-led public inquiry into child sexual exploitation in Oldham were defeated at a town hall meeting.
It comes after a recent report found children were failed by the agencies meant to protect them from abuse.
The Failsworth Independent Party had tabled a motion asking the chief executive to write to the government requesting a public inquiry.
But Labour councillors approved an amended motion without this request.
Conservative member Robert Barnes described it as a "travesty", adding it was "the night that democracy died in Oldham".
The Local Democracy Reporting Service said the three-hour meeting on Wednesday was turbulent from start to finish and the public gallery was again filled with many angry residents.

The Failsworth Independents wanted the chief executive to write to the Home Secretary and Minister for Housing, Communities and Local Government requesting a "fully independent and broad-ranging" public inquiry "as soon as is practically possible".
Councillor Brian Hobin, from Failsworth Independents, said: "We can't move on.
"Multiple failings have happened - general apologies; no good.
"We need a public inquiry, an independent one to tell us who failed and why, to tell us who knew and why and who did nothing about it and why."

'What benefit?'

However, the Labour group had tabled an amendment to the motion that removed the section about a public inquiry.
The amendment stated that dedicated resources should be recruited or redeployed to support the work of Operation Sherwood instead.
Operation Sherwood is a fresh police investigation into the child sexual abuse in Oldham and was launched following the publication of the review.
Council leader Amanda Chadderton, who moved the amendment, said: "We want to see improvements for children and young people and see the people that committed these disgusting crimes brought to justice.
"The original motion doesn't explain what benefit at all a public inquiry would have, either providing improvements to our assurance for today's children and young people or seeking justice for historic victims of abuse."
The amendment was approved by all Labour councillors despite opposition from the Failsworth Independents, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.

Either the North/South Pole or Africa are available but the outcome is the same. You live in a hut in the middle of nowhere playing computer games.
You could also technically live in the Russian wilderness but the law is much tighter there.
