UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

We're all going to die.
But not for the reason you quoted
East Kilbride and Strathaven MP Joani Reid has also been readmitted to the party. In March, she said she had "voluntarily" suspended herself after her husband was arrested on suspicion of spying for China.
Responding to her readmittance on Thursday evening, Reid she was "excited to play a full part in supporting our new prime minister".

She added: "I have never been part of a police investigation, as a suspect or as a witness, and I am pleased that this has now been recognised."
If someone is spying for China and their spouse is never investigated as a suspect OR WITNESS then it's admission the police either are owned by China, are incompetent or both.

I just don’t use these apps at all. They’re a direct funding of illegal immigration.
If I want takeout, which doesn’t happen often, it’s fish and chips, and I will go to the chippy and point at the fish I want.
Last time I did this, I noticed that a load of people that came in after me were getting served before me because they'd pre-ordered through an app for collection.

My local (chinky) chippy doesn't do apps. Doesn't even do cards.I'm sure there must be some dodgy tax reason for it, but it's quite refreshing to be able to go in and just order two fish, large chips, mushy peas, and a scallop without any faff.

is that surprising? They ordered before you did.
It was a bit surprising to me, yeah. I didn't know it was possible to pre-order at the chippy.

Sadly, now that it is possible, it basically means you have to. The option of just turning up, queuing and getting served isn't really tenable now. Instead, there's no queue, but they'll take 40 minutes while they deal with collection orders.

Just have a takeaway that you solely pick when you need to get one. There's a real good chippy near me and my family have been enough times to know the staff, we get served fast and the portions we get are bloody massive for a damn good price too.

Honestly do not get the hate towards English Breakfasts, I find them very filling for a day at work.
A full English is a real proper dish. If it's done well it'll keep you going for ages and it tastes great with plenty of flavour from my experience. Always funny how people forget stuff like that and beef wellington when they shittalk British food.

If I’m waiting 40 min for fish n chips it’s because I’m cooking them.

Last time I saw a bloke use an app for ordering food the driver drove straight past twice within 5 min and marked the order delivered without dropping off.

I have been having 3 eggs and 5 pieces of bacon for months now and it keeps me going til 2-3. English breakfasts are actually pretty sound nutritionally, with good levels of cholesterol and iron. High protein and healthy fat content; a few hash browns or shredded potatoes are very nice. Black pudding is one of my staples, as I can have 2 slices for my carbs for the day.

Same. It’s also the only takeaway I will use. Dominos is terrible overpriced shit, and although I used to enjoy an occasional curry, I’ve noticed that all the local Indian takeaways (which also do kebabs) are in fact run by middle easterners. One even has the “hajj” or something permanently playing on a big TV beside the counter. That’s the end of that.

In summary: The Chinese - a great bunch of lads.

They are racist though, you wouldn’t want to be racist would you.

Of course there are good British dishes (my favourite was the roasted duck with plums which is eaten during Christmas). Fish and chips are also good.

What I don't understand is how the Brits love beans so much. To me it is a bland, sad dish that makes me fart a lot.

At the first glance, it seems like an asshole move. But I am pretty certain shitlib flavoured news are omitting some details. Either way, Reform is controlled opposition.

What I don't understand is how the Brits love beans so much.
The UK had rationing after the end of WWII for longer than the war lasted. This is because they love performatively suffering, but regardless of why, the result was to a great extent the destruction of traditional British cuisine in favor of packaged, and easily measured, doled out, and controlled slop, such as tinned beans.

If you play music as loud as possible in a car with the windows open it should be legal for me to throw a petrol bomb through that open window.
It also should be legal to car bomb people whose cars make really loud revving sounds.
If I want takeout, which doesn’t happen often, it’s fish and chips, and I will go to the chippy and point at the fish I want.
Not to mention most takeout generally isn't good for you so the walk to and from isn't going to do you any harm.

Do you have any examples of pre-war traditional British cuisine?

If this is actually legitmate and isn't just typical journalist nonsense ommiting details than what's even the goal here? If the boss owns the cafe and is just handing out food for kids, maybe those who live with family struggling finacially than it's not illegal nor even immoral. Sounds like the reform council chief is just mad he can't get freebies or just hates children.
