A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

it's not a 'fuck authority' thing (like a white coat effect) I don't think, he does seriously seem like a different person. I think back to how stressed Truss always seemed and then it turned out the banks wanted to skin her corpse for her economic policy. With how self-destructive the Starmer (and now Burnham) government policies are, I'm seriously buying into the whole 'the PM is just a puppet some lunatic group'. What London needs is a lot more pubs, so hopefully this demographic trend moves things in that direction.

The small town where I went to uni had a population of about 12,000 and had 25 pubs (I know this beacuase there was an annual "monster pub crawl" where you would try to have a half pint in all of them). Imo that's a good ratio. Enough for a decent night out, good variety for that size of place.

For the same ratio London, with a population of 9 million, should have 18,750 pubs. But instead, a quick google says it only has about 3,500 pubs. It's got about a fifth of the number of pubs that it should.

In some areas you really feel this as well, it feels barren. You'll get off at a tube stop and there's just nothing for streets and streets. This is the capital of England ffs.

Same with the folk over in the UAE They are the ones who would surely benefit from this influx of doctors and engineers to bolster their local economies meaning they don't have to buy out other western efforts. Especially so with the UAE wishing to larp as Venice of old, accepting these fine specimen would do wonders.

They just traffic Filipino/Jeet slaves for their workforce, anything professional they do indeed hire foreigners, countries like Oman especially love Brits in the education field as a lot of their schools teach the British curriculum, like many other middle eastern countries that were previous colonies/protectorates.

It's getting harder to find decent, traditional pubs in the capital tho, I can't stand the modern types of bars filled with HR cunts and fags in Shoreditch or Hackney. Tho, I always thought the white Lunduners were moving out of London for that "escape to the country" dream.

From what I've read she lived super out of the way so if anyone wanted to get her then it would have to be planned and require a lot of travel to get where she lived so it mostly rules it out for being a robbery gone wrong. Same with the fact she was very out spoken on the trans stuff and was a well known TERF.
