A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Local news: my local Subway has been jeetified. All the native British staff have been replaced with Indians. Walked straight back out.

Happened to mine last year - even though I didn’t go all that often, the staff were local kids you could chat to. One older lady I was on first name terms with.
Overnight it was jeeted, about 6 surly Indians hanging about the gas station counter, one very slowly and incompetently making sandwiches. I walked out before I got to the front of the queue and never went back.

As with a lot of these jeet businesses the original white owners are looking to move on (often as the area has changed demographics) and they need to sell up. So pajeets come in and wrangle all the family benefits, get loans or support from foreign nations and they purchase the business. It happens to country shops, take aways and whatever the fuck you call subway. This is how the pajeets move into smaller rural places. Either they're buying out businesses by pooling resources or they're renting them. Then staying them with their own family who don't get paid very much and not paying any of the taxes. Then they use that money to buy up more shit. While if you whitey didn't pay your taxes you would be done within a week.

That's something that does make a difference. I don't use the local paki shops, I don't get takeaways from pakis,use shitty car washes, and when I need a cab I use an independent white british or european. If enough people do it, it'll effect change gradually over time.

We've a local taxi firm whose drivers are nearly all ex forces. The one none white driver is a former ghurka who had part of his leg and an ear blown off.

I just did a grocery shop. Usually my stuff for work (soup, eggs,mini babybel, crackers,yogurt, naked bars and fruit) comes in at about £90 for the month. I've done a smaller shop of the same stuff cos I'm on annual leave for a big chunk of next month and it's come in at £130.

But you know it's all good cos reeves has done some tax breaks on visits to theme parks, right?

I never liked Subway, but I've observed similar with my local Turkish shop. It was pretty decent for fruit and veg and had a proper butcher's counter and a deli counter. The staff all used to be Turks.

The Turkish owner still owns the place as I see him in there, but the staff are all I believe Pakistani (one of the girls wears a hijab, and I'm assuming you're not going to mix fresh-off-the-boat Pakistanis with fresh-off-the-boat Indians). It might be the same with other shops - not that the owners have sold up, they've just acquired some freshies to work for less money (and who likely who have no understanding of British labour law so don't complain about shift length or no breaks).

One other aspect of Boriswavers in shops is they have no consideration of customer experience or any spatial awareness. It doesn't matter if I'm in that Turkish shop, the Tesco Metro, the Pret-A-Manger by my office... if they've flipped their workforce then aisles are blocked, shelves are blocked, doors into the shop are blocked by people restocking and ignoring me and any attempts to say "excuse me". I have jostled, but I don't like doing it. God forbid I need counter service, they'll leave it unmanned with no eye on if a customer needs something. Nibbs tells me I'm too patient with retail workers who are struggling, but that's only when they're trying their best while understaffed. This lot don't give a shit and so I lose patience very quickly, and have deliberately abandoned baskets with perishables in if I'm kept waiting. It's not my job to go searching for someone to serve me, or politely wait while someone ignores I'm obviously trying to get a pint of milk that they're blocking. I vaguely considered switching to delivery only but I don't trust the supermarket pickers or delivery drivers.

I avoid that Turkish shop whenever I can now, and I will not buy anything from their counters because I don't trust their hygiene now. I'm more of a bleeding heart than many on this forum and have no issue with "diversity" assuming it's in reasonable volumes and they integrate, but we've got a youth unemployment crisis - who is sponsoring these visas? I'd say "I don't believe there's no local teenagers to do these jobs", but Boris scrapped the market test requirement so employers no longer have to prove they can't find Brits to work these jobs (although the minimum salary increase and qualification requirements seem to have stemmed the flow a bit).

I disagree, because the people being shipped in used to be very limited in number and willing to assimilate and adopt our values.

The classic example of British racism is something like "I can't stand black people. Oh, not you, Dave, you're one of the good ones, I mean those other black ones." Compare that to American racism like "the only good nigger is a dead nigger" and getting into insane blood quantums like "octaroons". We've not had the same context, which is why in WWII American servicemen collectively lost their shit when British people wouldn't enforce racial segregation and make white only pubs.

I resent the Americanisation of our politics, whether that's people shouting "hands up don't shoot" at an unarmed British bobby, or the other extreme. As long as people are limited in number, do their best to fit in, and are generally decent people then I do believe most Brits are ok with diversity, they're just not ok with mass migration, replacement or enclaves. Most of the problems we have today are not the consequence of letting some Jamaicans move here in the 60s or whatever. It's the impacts of Thatcherism, Blairism and overall Neoliberal Globalism that skyrocketed our immigration to insane levels to undermine our rights as workers.

I moved recently and for the first time I started using online delivery. With Ocado and Tesco's and it's been a joy. The cost of my weekly shop is down just because it's easier to do price comparisons in front of a keyboard, also with Ocado it's easier to find some more obscure products.
With fresh fruit it can be an issue, but I have a sainsbury's down the road for that. With Ocado and Tesco's at least they seem to have been careful with their drivers, they've all been english, two have been women. Always eager to make the unloading easier. I think it's the way forward
