A British man got a Ph.D. in threesomes after discovering there are few academic studies about the steamy sexual dynamic, according to a report.
Ryan Scoats, a researcher at Birmingham City University, was inspired to study ménage à trois after having a hot one with his ex-girlfriend and another woman, he told broadly.com.

Later, he tried to read up on the subject and found it hadn’t been thoroughly researched — especially threesomes among two men and one woman.
He pitched it to the university as the focus of his Ph.D. and spent months surveying college-age people about their sexual encounters, the site reported.
Scoats found that, in most cases, there was little physical interaction between the men during threesomes.
Many of the men said the encounter was a part of a “bonding” experience with another male friend.
“In the past it would have been more stigmatized for men to have [two-male] threesomes,” Scoats says. “[But] they did seem comfortable telling at least their friends that they’d had one.”
He added, “I think because of the reduction of homophobia in general within society, this allows men to have these kinds of threesomes with no fear about what others are going to think of them for it.”
His research also touched on non-monogamy and sexuality.

A year and a half into their university experience, seven of our participants had had at least one FFM threesome, and five of our participants had had at least one MMF threesome. We argue that this threesome experience is a component of cultural progression toward a more liberal, recreational culture of sexuality that encourages play and experimentation instead of a procreative model of sexuality. Thus, this research contributes to the growing body of literature showing that the cultural boundaries of heterosexuality are rapidly expanding for males, permitting more same-sex sexual contact without triggering the one-time-rule of homosexuality.

If you are having a threeway that means that someone has to be ok with it enough to at least be a little bi curious. There's no way around that. There was another naked dude and you were ok with him being there.
Do you really have to touch though? If a guy enjoyed watching another guy beat his meat or even just cum from being with a chick isn't that kind of pointing towards him possibly being curious about other guys?
I don't think it's straight out gay all the time. But I think it does point to the possibility that the guys involved may be bi curious. They need to study this more thoroughly by following up on their sexual habits after the threeway.
