I don't know that I could come up with a more facile analysis of Ulysses if I tried. I'd even accept it if he just said "it's overrated," though I would no more believe he read it in that case. "Not that great," like he's talking about fucking Sweet Valley High or the latest trash tie-in Star Wars novel. I'll never understand how such a successful grifter can be this stupid.
John isn't a successful grifter. The only money he's ever made has been thanks to his parents and Frank. All of his ventures like Revolution 60 and his political campaigns have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to get him back a fraction of it. John Flynt fails at being a conman like he fails at everything else.

Yes stunning and brave, just like the Democrats who condemned Ilhan Omar for her antisemitism, right John?

I knew it, that fucking SLUT Tulsi Gabbard at it again with her alt-right tactics, I don't need any corroborating evidence to take this at face value especially since I know what a fucking WHORE that brown bitch is.

A petty narcissist who destroys the lives of people who work for him in pursuit of trivial and selfish gains? It does remind me of someone, John, and I can't believe we live in such a crappy society where EVERYONE EXCEPT FOR YOU is like this.

I know this is going to shock you, but John misses the point of The Caine Mutiny entirely. Since it's a great scene, and since I don't feel like sperging out at the moment, enjoy Jose Ferrer on this lovely Sunday morning.

The Navy doesn't punish the mutineers!

The book ends with Willie Keith and Tom Keefer triumphing over Queeg in court, thanks to defense counsel Barney Greenwald.

Greenwald shows up drunk to the celebration dinner, which is also the celebration of Keefer selling his novel, and rains on the parade by saying Keefer is the real coward, the real "old yellowstain", who ruined Maryk's career (and Queegs) over a personal grudge, and essentially established the conflict between career Navy men like Queeg and Maryk and rich recruits like Willie Keith and Tom Keefer.

The "whistleblowers" ABSOLUTELY do not get punished.

Are none of John's dumb friends calling him out on this lie?

Edit: The theft of the strawberries has nothing to do with "machismo": Queeg is repeatedly told that the mess boys finished the strawberries. But he doesn't accept that reality, because investigating the "crime" gives him a chance to play detective and, it's later revealed, reenact one of his greatest Navy career victories, when he solved such a mystery earlier in his career.

Wu is a fascinating liar. Her methods are calculated even if the end result is dumb or falls flat (which typically it is or does).

What is it called when a 41 year old says to 30 year olds, “well, we’re the same age, and i think [unimportant point, I just wanted to establish that I’m 25% younger than I really am}”?

That require either John or someone stupid enough to be friends with John to have either read a novel from 1951, watched the film, or seen the play adaptation. I guess they could have read the Wikipedia article, but I sorta doubt it.

Running for office despite having no experience, relevant qualifications or even necessary skills rather than helping out someone better suited for the job because you want the glory all for yourself is pretty textbook narcissism.

Well, the whole thing appears to have been baleeted now. That at least suggests Wu took another pass at the wikipedia summary and decided her primary school book review might be a bit inaccurate.

What is it with Wu and claiming to have read books recently? In the span of a week we've had Brianna "I haven't read a book since 1998" Wu claim to have read "most of" Dostoevsky, she's given us her opinion on how James Joyce is overrated and now this. Did Wu suddenly wake up at 40 and realise she knows absolutely nothing and has gone on some sort of autistic audible great books programme? Or did she wake up at 40, realise she knows absolutely nothing and set about faking being an intellectual through a combination of skimming wikipedia and hoping nobody challenges her bullshit?

I think whenever Wu mentions any book, a bot needs to tweet this at her.

Deleted, huh?

BOLD LEADERSHIP!

Nicely done!

It's telling, but not surprising, that English Professor John gets the title wrong on both Profiles in Courage and The Caine Mutiny.

John also can't decide whether Queeg was a captain or a commander, so he uses both, and gets it wrong twice; Queeg was a lieutenant commander.

The cherry on top, proving that John has neither read the book nor watched the movie, is the startling assertion that the novel and movie are set on a submarine. Because it's easy to mistake a minesweeper for a submarine.

I didn't even notice the submarine part! Good eye!

Someone needs to DM (DESTROYER MINESWEEPER) Wu and let him know.

Jesus, how did I miss that? You're totally right.

I think all he knows about any version of this story is the whole "crazy person obsessively playing with ball bearings" thing that's bled into pop culture. I bet he didn't even know what it was from or who wrote it until Herman Wouk's obituary scrolled across his feed a couple of days ago and he decided he would be real smart about this writer he never heard of.

Poop Culture.

John knows a lot about suppressed masturbation, and fondling poisonous pellets of feces.

No wonder he hates Freud.
