Even better is that the only pictures he has access to (I presume because he can't get any from his family since they want nothing to do with him) are candid shots from what I'm guessing is an old yearbook or something. And hey, guess what? Candid photos usually have people making weird faces because you're not really focused on looking good for the camera. I'm sure every single one of us has at least one picture of ourselves where we look kind of stupid. There's no way to tell how someone's feeling in such a picture because it could be any number of things. The picture of John drawing doesn't look like a tortured soul desperately yearning to be the girl of his dreams, it just looks like someone intent on their drawing.
Now, every single one of John's modern selfies where he's staring gormlessly into the camera with his hacked-up face and hair falling out and creepy plastic smile? Yeah, no, I definitely see that as an image of perfect mental health.
