Having a pet is not the same thing as slavery if you do it right.

Having a pet is a symbiotic relationship. You enjoy their company, and they reward your loyalty with emotional support and, if they are capable of it, defense of home and surrounding environs.

For dogs especially, they see you as the alpha of the pack, deferring to who provides food, shelter, and affection is natural to them and it's a two way street of loyalty if you treat them right, only an asshole regards them as a slave.

Then again, I apparently describe Brianna Wu, who seems to agree dogs are slaves by their own words.
