Yeah ... I mean ... it's not the helmet that's the mystery; it's the face beneath it. Right?

But it's the helmet that's in all the marketing, I guess.

Didn't Phasma do nothing and then die after being tossed down a garbage port by two randos? That's dumb as hell, even Boba Fett managed to get a few shots off before his pathetic death.

The difference is Boba Fett was a breakout character by chance -- people genuinely reacted to him: his gravelly voice (stupidly altered in the Special Editions), the design of his costume, the fact he had the balls to talk back to Vader. It was lightning in a bottle. Phasma, of course, is purely a creature of marketing: she's supposed to be the cool enigmatic character everyone wants to know more about. She's played by the warrior chick from Game of Thrones! She's a Strong Female Character! She scares Finn! She has that awesome silver armor inspired by the killer spheres from Phantasm! (Ok, that one got me, too.) She is, in short, an excellent expression of the cold, cynical, calculated marketing of the new movies, and a troubling sign that as entertaining as they are they're going to be as shallow as the prequels were poorly written.

Naturally, John is all over it.

This is classic Wu. Starts by making it about himself, then completely misses the point. The point being: no one gives shit when "Brianna Wu" is speaking somewhere. There's no one lined up around the block to either watch OR disrupt. Someone with a lick of sense might realize that this has no comparison to someone like Milo who has extremist groups mobilizing to stop him every time a speaking engagement is announced. You think maybe they try to handle things more strategically?

Can you imagine some imbecile stalling their car out in the middle of the road and knocking into the back of them despite trying to stop? And when you get out of the car to exchange info and ask WTF they were doing you're greeted by a 6+ foot tall man in a dress acting incredulous about the fact they've just fucked your car up out of their own sheer incompetence?

assuming this happened at all and it's not just a cover for the disappearance of the trashed TT and it's replacement with a Porsche

I've read the majority of extended universe books but stopped about 6-7 years ago and sold off all my books. I was in a bookstore the other day and browsed through Phasma. It's poorly written garbage.

The only reason John is pushing it is because Phasma is a female Star Wars character and the author is a woman. There are tons of Star Wars books better than this shit. Even Children of the Jedi is better than Phasma.
