This isn't really all that new. Even Geth pointed out on his blog when he spread the word about the graduation stuff the narrative is inconsistent on this, meaning, John allowed the lie to spread in some places and let the truth out in others, apparently whatever he thought would benefit him more at the time:

Graduated: "I'M SMART!"
Didn't Graduate: "I'M SMART DESPITE NOT HAVING A DEGREE!"

Either one could have worked well depending on the audience he's trying to pander to, so yeah, this story was pretty inconsistent even before we fact checked it, all we did was eliminate doubt and John shit himself because we and everyone else who spread the news eliminated any wiggle room for him to lie later.

This is something that they never find a solution even when before harassement become a SJW thing. The whole purpose of the new algorithm is to be more like "facebook" and be about specific trends or posts than individual chronological timelines. The idea is that they are selling the harassment concerns as one of the reasons why don't get many users monthly or why they can't make people click ads.

Thought, in that regard, it seems to depend in whatever SJW campaign or issues is in the middle. The whole point is to look good to a minority involved in tech press BS. Is a shitty conflict of interest and creates bad precedent but will unaffect users no getting in GG or SJW related fights for some time, because that is easier to the staff to ignore the issue that having your mod team doing all this shit is something that is going to grow worse. That is, if twitter survives long enough.
