She is telling a classical underdog narrative, that deeply resonates with people. Wu arguments that the 'tech business' is a male domain -a part of the vile patriarchy so to speak - and because of that women have it much harder than their male counterparts. Her narrative is that women have more trouble to make it to the top and she knows that, because of her own personal experience: "I was a woman for all my life. I know the misogyny women endure from what I personally experienced.".

This is the story she tries to tell and this is the story that fuels her tugboat. But Wu tries to sweep the facts, that she wasn't born a woman and that she had rich parents, under the rug. If the public would realize that Wu wasn't born female, but as a rich, white male, it would destroy her credibility. Her alleged experiences would be exposed as the lies they are, because she obviously couldn't have had the same experiences a 'born female' woman has in the tech industry. In short, many people would realize that Wu is talking out of her ass all the time. Also, she hid her past and hiding your past makes you instantly appear shady to some degree. It doesn't fit the underdog narrative at all.

Hiding that she was born male is bad enough for her narrative, but if it would come out that she didn't run through all the steps to 'become a woman', would make her a guy in drags in the eyes of the public... A guy in drags, who is posing as a woman, screaming mysoggyknee every other tweet and who obviously has no idea what he is talking about.

A few might shout out that she is "strong and proud", but many of her supporters will feel betrayed.

The thing that I find downright odd is nobody calls her out about her experience in the industry. All the info she presents is second-hand information and most of the time it's inaccurate or dubious. She has no stories that happened to her, no workplace stories, nothing. It's why she needs to make up people like Evelyn, Natalie, nameless female associates in the industry, and the childhood friend who killed himself. It's more difficult to fact check and more likely to get an emotional response from onlookers if questioned. It's pretty fucking shameless.

I think you're overestimating how much they value credibility and honesty, and underestimating how much they value the sheer tokenism of Wu's role.
They all already know she's a lying narcissistic transsexual, and they all already have their defensive theses ready for any sort of public discussion.
The money thing means nothing to them, because money is nothing to them.
To them, the crime would be the invasion of privacy (even though she forced her own way into the spotlight), and the defense of his female identity.

From their perspective it's not about what you really are, but who you "feel" you are.
So even if Wu is by all realistic standards a rich white man still gagging on his silver spoon, he feels he is a disadvantaged woman who came from nothing, and by their rules, is.
