Box Office Bombs you saw in theatres

I'll list the ones I remember in chronological order:

The Shadow (1994) - decent movie, was crushed by the other releases (it had to compete with The Crow, Forrest Gump,

I'll cheat a little. I saw this one on video when it came out. I really liked it as a kid. So much so that I had the action figures and even a The Shadow mug for school. I haven't seen it since. Considering how bad the 90's were for comic book/superhero flicks The Shadow is pretty good.

Howard the Duck
Airheads
Popeye
Wizards
Brain Donors
The Black Cauldron
Roxanne
Beverly Hills Cop 3
Big Trouble in Little China

The Shadow

Probably tons of others, my parents took me and my brothers to the drive-in a lot when we were kids.

Me and my dad saw Fantasia 2000 in the theater. Only people there. Can't remember why we went either.

Vibes. It really isn't a terrible film. Cyndi Lauper is really good as a medium. Jeff Goldblum is okay too. Unfortunately he was a jerk to her on set.

Baby's Day Out (1994) - my school took us to see it, watch the RLM Plinkett review of it, it's one of the worst things ever made
The Youth Center I went to as a kid had staff approved movie posters of recent movies all over the main room and snack bar (the snack bar also had a Max Headroom poster ordering us not to say the "P" word). Mostly it was stuff younger kids would like to watch, but they threw a bone to older kids and included a few PG-13 movies like Speed 2 and Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde. Anyways, one of these posters was none other than Baby's Day Out. I remember the poster showing a chubby infant in the back of a cab and thought it was supposed to be along the lines of Rugrats (I didn't think of Baby Geniuses only because I hadn't heard of it then). Years later I saw it listed on TV and thought, why not. I turned it off after about five minutes. Not only did was it nothing like what it implied, those five minutes were horrible. Also that baby was most definitely not a baby, but I guess "Toddler's Day Out" doesn't have the same ring to it.

As an aside, the Youth Center staff had some serious shit taste in deciding what we'd like because pretty much every poster was a movie that sucked. Some of it was things people liked briefly, but forgot and grew out of quickly, like Richie Rich. But it also included disasters like The Stupids, and this vaguely Goonies-inspired "adventure" movie about two girls. I think the most watchable movie represented was The Great Panda Adventure. And I always zoned out the few times I was made to sit through it as a kid.

Eight Heads in a Duffle Bag
Tank Girl
Judge Dredd (both of them)
Johnny Mnemonic
Highlander 3
Supernova
End of Days
Phantoms
Reindeer Games

I really liked the second Dredd movie, thought Johnny Mnemonic was OK, and thought Reindeer Games was better than a lot of people gave it credit for (for a brief time it was kind of considered a punchline for some reason, but it wasn't that bad.)

Funny story, but End of Days was the first movie my daughter went to. She was a week old and slept right through it.

Reindeer Games was a punchline because it had a disastrously messy production history, went massively over budget and got test-marketed to death and mutiliated to where John Frankenheimer petitioned the DGA unsuccessfully to have his name removed from the theatrical version.

When the director’s cut got released to DVD, a lot of people said “How the hell did this flop?”, but they literally weren’t watching the movie that flopped, but the movie that the studio fucked up into making it a flop. See also Kingdom of Heaven and Legend for the same thing happening on other occasions, except for it taking 15-plus years for Legend to be released as intended by Ridley Scott.

Holmes and Watson...
My folks called me up on Christmas Day of 2018, asking me if I wanted to see a movie with them.

My dumb ass didn't ask what they wanted to see until the ride over to the theater.

My dad, who has seen pretty much all of Will Ferrell's movies, didn't laugh once. My mom was miserable the entire time.

It's quite the accomplishment, making a film with a premise so mismatched (dumb comedy + well known detective series) and unfunny that not even Netflix wanted it.

Power Rangers (2017) - Mixed reaction. On one hand, it is a fascinating train wreck of clusterfucked lore. On the other, there are slivers of potential here and there of a better movie. Not as fun as the 1995 film, but more entertaining than 1997's Turbo.

Treasure Planet (2002) - Underrated, but definitely not Disney's best.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) - Looked great, but forgettable otherwise. Saw this for free due to an older cousin, at the time, working at the theater. Thankfully, Final Fantasy X picked me back up.

The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000) - Liked the syndicated reruns of the cartoon growing up, so gave this film a go. Very lackluster.

Jack Frost ( 1998 ) - Saw it with family. Boring, but harmless. Much prefer the other Jack Frost, the killer snowman.

Cutthroat Island
Heaven's Gate
Krull
Soldier
Blade Runner
Windtalkers
Judge Dredd (both of them, but the one with Karl Urban was a decent movie tho).
Hudson Hawk
The Postman (I still like it)
Green Lantern
13th Warrior
Cotton Club
Fan4stic Four (I still want my money back)
John Carter
R.I.P.D. (I truly regret watching this one, fucking waste of time and money)

I only saw the movie on video as well and while I never had any toys myself I have a distinct memory of my cousin showing me his Shadow action figure.

I tried to rewatch it on DVD once in 2009 but it turned out it was one of those deals where it was fullscreen only, so I bailed, don't know if it's since got a widescreen release.

Johnny Mnemonic was fucking horrible. Seriously read the short story and compare to the movie. It was shit. SHIIIIIIIT.

Interestingly, William Gibson wrote the screenplay himself. The movie was mostly fucked over by the patchwork financing the makers pulled together, as some backers pulled out at bad times, leaving them to scrap or scale down things just to keep things together.

Japan got a cut of the movie that is significantly different, with some major plot points much clearer and with a lot more Takeshi Kitano, which automatically makes that version better. Sadly, even in Japan, that cut is hard to come by, as their VHS release was the US cut and the DVD and Blu-Ray releases were produced in small quantity.

I can get that cut.
