I'm not sure how much this held true in later years, but as a long time lurker at the time the "mass majority" of /fit/ shitposting was not meant to be construed seriously as a lot of it was meant to filter out the newfags. True, it's sad that he took the bait so hard and so often, especially on a day he was supposed to be celebrating like you said. But ultimately we're talking about someone who claims he was participating in "harmless trolling" on the chans in the early 00s, which is supposed to have made him into the person he is today (archive: https://archive.is/qejDa). He's since had plenty of opportunities to change and better himself and has chosen to take advantage of exactly zero of them.
