Prosthetics generally take a long time to get used to. You can't use them for more than an hour or two at a time at first because of the rubbing and chafing. As your skin gets tougher and the muscle gets acclimated you can use it for longer periods until it's normally functional.

If you get your legs hacked off because of beetus your body, by definition, can't heal itself, which basically precludes you from using prosthetics.
