The core issue is Boogie's compulsive manipulation. I don't think he is capable of helping himself. A genuinely manipulative person would have realized by now that this angle of defense is not helping but Boogie has stuck with it for far too long. He is hard wired to be manipulative even past the point of the manipulation being effective. He may not actually know how to be honest.
