Blizzard of 2026 (January edition) thread - Preparing for Snowmageddon

Thanks @mindlessobserver for posting this in Happenings so I didn't have to search for the thread. I get all my critical news from the internet's best and most reliable news source: Kiwi muthafuckin' Farms.

We're mostly set with the necessities here at the potato patch, just hoping the power holds because it's gonna be fuckin' cold and my cat is a pussy about chilly weather.

The severe impact zones where you will either see 2 feet of snow or 1 inch of ice are pretty narrow, and are impossible to pin down. For example, Baton Rouge will most likely get nothing but rain, but drive an hour north too Shreveport and they could have half an inch of ice, all power knocked out and the interstates blocked in all directions because of trucks and cars playing bumper cars.

Same with the snow fall. For example, one town could get 2 feet, and the one 50 miles to the south could get 6 inches. This is a major Noreaster that is notoriously difficult to predict because its hard to figure out how it will behave. You have a major tropical front impacting with a major arctic front. Its the sort of thing that can only happen in North America incidentally and it drives prediction models absolutely bonkers because we are talking about a scenario where one region will be look at temperatures of -5 degrees, and another a few hundred miles to the south looking at temperatures in the mid 60's and having severe tropical thunderstorms.

You will know shit is getting real if Tornado warnings start dropping.
 
I finally got a snowcaster plow at the start of winter since half the neighborhood asked if I would clear snow for them this year but I'm actually worried now that I should have gone with a 29"x18" plow instead of 38"x8" one. Either way I'm gonna be out there multiple times a day to keep up with it since it's poised to come to a standstill right over us. I ordered a fleece union suit liner a month ago but surprise surprise, it's scheduled to show up DURING the worst of it when everything is going to be shut down.
 
States of Emergency being declared in all states from Virginia to Maine. All Commercial traffic is being ordered to stop. I-95 interstate corridor is closing to commercial traffic between Richmond, Virginia and Boston, Massachusetts.

Vehicle restrictions will go into effect this weekend in Pennsylvania as a major winter storm is expected to hit the commonwealth.

The announcement was made at a Friday afternoon news conference a the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency's headquarters in Harrisburg. You can watch the full news conference below.


Tier 4 vehicle restrictions​

  • Start time: Midnight on Saturday, January 24
  • Restriction level: Tier 4 (full commercial vehicle restriction)
  • Roadways Affected: All Pennsylvania interstates, the Pennsylvania Turnpike and all extensions.
  • ALL Pennsylvania interstates including:
    • PA Turnpike I-76
    • PA Turnpike I-70
    • All PA Turnpike extensions.
  • U.S. 15 from I-180 to the New York border.
  • U.S. 22 from Route 66 to I-99.
  • U.S. 22 from I-78 to the New Jersey border.
  • U.S. 219 from U.S. 30 to U.S. 22.
  • U.S. 220 from I-80 to I-180.
  • U.S. 322 from Interstate 99 to I-81.
  • Route 28 from I-279 to U.S. 422.
  • The entire length of Route 33.

Vehicles Not Permitted During Tier 4 Restrictions​

  • All commercial vehicles
  • School buses
  • Commercial buses and motor coaches
  • Motorcycles
  • RVs and motorhomes
  • Passenger vehicles towing trailers (including cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks)

We’re gonna get 5-6 inches here in Metro Detroit and everyone is acting like this doesn’t happen multiple times every winter. Irritating!
 
Sad no thundersnow coming. My favorite weather type. Shame about the people stuck in wherever they are due to vacation or traveling. Hope they are at somewhere safe.

NOAA also notes that the very South also has a very small tornado risk if any storms pop up at the tail end of the blizzard too, which could further fuck up things if they spin up.
However, forecast soundings suggest that these low-level hodographs will trend more linear, as the initially stable boundary-layer destabilizes. So the risk for tornadoes seems rather limited, but there may be a window for an evolving line of storms with potential to produce strong surface wind gusts, particularly across parts of southeastern Alabama and the Florida Panhandle into southwestern Georgia late Sunday afternoon and evening.

Based on what I saw on YT from the last time the southern fellas got snow, here are my top two most common fails:

1. If your pipes are in danger of freezing, turn off your water. The number of people I saw with thousands of dollars in water damage because they didn't think to do this thing that takes like 2 minutes was crazy. If your pipes freeze, they will split, and they will dump unlimited water into the insides of your walls. Don't fuck around.

2. Consider driving slightly slower than 95 mph during an ice storm. I remember seeing videos of Texas traffic during that last big freeze, and I swear I've never seen so many high-speed impacts. Felt it in my balls.

"Sorry pussy, but if you're going to let some "inclement weather" slow you down then maybe you shouldn't be driving. Us pros can go 100-125+mph in any weather, doesn't give you an excuse to clog up the fucking highway."
I genuinely do not understand people who drive at the regular or over the speedlimit when roads are shit. We have plenty of tards here that will gun it on un-plowed roads where you can't even see the lanelines and by the end of it theres a swath of vehicles in ditches.

My favorite is the people who hit a downslope covered in snow and ice and assume that its a good idea to hit the brakes. Always ends in a ditch.
 
because i work for the county i'm on call for road maintenance this weekend. it's gonna be 6pm to 6am, and likely won't go home sunday. i can't wait for how much this is going to suck!
