Blank MMS messages

Roomie complains about getting blank MMS messages on thier phone from random numbers. I think its a hack and told him to wipe thier phone. Any ideas? Only information I am finding on this subject is old articles relating to stagefright back around 2015.

Since it is election year in the US a lot of people are sending texts that have no text and only a picture. If your friend is using a phone or messaging app that doesn't accept MMS (or has pictures somehow blocked in the settings) then these might show up as empty texts. Also, I think MMS requires data so if the phone has no data plan and is not on a wifi network then the pictures won't show.

Do they have an iPhone? Is it consistent with all MMS messages (random or contacts?)

If they have an iPhone, check if they have MMS/SMS messages enabled. It might be spam.
