Ice cream maker alleges the move is part of efforts by its parent company to silence its activism

Ben & Jerry's has said its chief executive, David Stever, was being removed by its parent company, Unilever, in a growing dispute over the ice cream company's political activism.

The allegation was part of a legal case filed in a US court by Ben & Jerry's that says Unilever violated a merger agreement by trying to silence its "social mission".
Unilever did not immediately reply to a request for comment from BBC News.

It comes a month after the ice cream company accused Unilever of demanding that it stops publicly criticising US President Donald Trump.

"Unilever has repeatedly threatened Ben & Jerry's personnel, including CEO David Stever, should they fail to comply with Unilever's efforts to silence the social mission," the filing with the US District Court for the Southern District of New York said.

Ben & Jerry's has long been known for taking a public stance on social issues since it was founded in 1978 by Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield.

It has often backed campaigns on issues like LGBTQ+ rights and climate change.

The ice cream maker was bought by Unilever in 2000 through a merger agreement that created an independent board tasked with protecting the ice cream brand's values and mission.

But Unilever and Ben & Jerry's have been at loggerheads for a while. Their relationship soured in 2021 when Ben & Jerry's announced it was halting sales in the West Bank.

The dispute escalated over the last year as Ben & Jerry's advocated for a ceasefire in Gaza.

In November, the ice cream company filed a lawsuit saying Unilever had tried to stop it from expressing support for Palestinian refugees.

Last month, in another court filing, Ben & Jerry's said Unilever had tried to ban it from publicly criticising Donald Trump.

Mr Stever has been with Ben & Jerry's since joining the firm in 1988 as a tour guide. He was appointed chief executive in 2023.

Ben and Jerry's court filing said the decision to oust Mr Stever was made without any consultation, as required in the merger agreement between the two companies.

"Unilever...attempted to force the independent board into rubberstamping the decision," it added.

They were always a smarmy activist brand, even in the 90's, IIRC one of the first major brands to have "mission statements" that had nothing to do with what they're selling.

They've only gotten worse, like all such companies, as the "right side of history" they want keeps failing to show up.

The original "burgers"? meme could've been about them.

Unilever should spin them off & let B&J's sell ice cream that caters to turbofaggots on their own. They are far more trouble than they are worth if Unilever has to beg to make any decisions despite owning them.

Fat retarded lib people who lived in the whitest state on earth and sell poison are mad at orange man? Gee, what a shocker.

Ben and his homosexual lover Jerry should spend a few years in Baltimore. Get a taste of real diversity.

Imagine the kino that could come from that. Ben and Jerry screaming “WE’RE NOT WHITE, WE’RE JEWISH, WE’RE ALLIES!” while a gang of urban yoofs tell them “Sheeeeit cracka youz b honkies, now u finna gib us dat wallet n phone else we finna hitchu wit da glizzy wit da switch”.

They sell this slop in Europe too now.

Is it even worth it? It costs like 10 euro for one tiny bucket.
It's expensive as Hell here , too, for the same polysorbate junk you can get cheaper by buying store-brand. You just don't get a cutesy name like "Pecan Resist!" and a promise that $1 of that cost will go to some world-saving cause.

Those who aren't as familiar wouldn't know this, but there is a distinct point where there was a change in their leadership, their ice cream went way down in quality, and their activism, in turn, became more and more insufferable - and fittingly, all of that happened around 2008. Prior to this they were still an ice cream company that backed lefty causes but they weren't anywhere near as blatant about it - and the ice cream was way better.

"They changed it, now it sucks" was a prevailing thought in lefty circles, but there was clearly enough dejected cat ladies buying it, because the brand persisted despite a marked downturn in quality.

If you had asked me before the leadership change (see above) , I'd have said almost. They were hallmarked by unusual flavor combinations you tended to not see in ice cream at the time.

Afterwards, fuck no. There's better ice cream, that isn't just 90% sugar and saturated fat, and is cheaper as well. As of my writing this, Ben and Jerry's is responsible for some of the least healthy ice cream flavors on the market, with the worst offender being Chubby Hubby (one pint has about as much sodium and about three and a half times the calories as a fucking McDonald's Big Mac). There are ice cream brands you could make a whole fucking sundae or parfait with, toppings and all, and not only be markedly better in quality and better for you, but also cheaper.

This is a twist on the brewing civil war between (mostly kosher) Establishment Shitlibs, like those running the university & corporate bureaucracies, and their (mostly Third World) Prog golems who've turned on them, like the obese dinduishas and imported rapefugees who love muh Palestine.

The twist being that the Prog golem (Ben & Jerry's) is also kosher.

Ben and Jerry's is barely ice cream. It's mostly cookies, jelly beans, or other assorted garbage with a little "ice cream" to hold it together, and the ingredients are cheap.

I could take or leave B&J, I didn't understand why it was so expensive because it wasn't anything I'd consider mindblowing. I liked a few flavors and I could ignore all the insufferable 60s boomer lefty shit, until they just began shoving it in your face and the product saw a marked decline in quality. Ice cream is supposed to be sweet but your fucking teeth shouldn't sting unmercifully after eating it.

I can honestly say that I have never bought nor even tasted their faggot ice cream in my life. Then again, I eat ice cream maybe once or twice a year. I suppose it is Haagen Dazs tier quality?
